We put this mix together for one of our favorite local bookstores, WORD . If you are anywhere near Greenpoint, you should probably go there right now and buy a book or two (if not, just go to their website and buy some online). This mix explores the more electronic/postrocky side of GIMME TINNITUS. We even went and dropped all the mp3s in a convenient zip file just for you. Download then listen. Downloadable: almost no WORDs Mixtape (mediafire) I also uploaded a few individual mp3s from the mix, [...]

Just like the name, Botony is the progressive, organic, complex and free-flowing musical endeavour of Stephen Spencer who also play drums for Sleep Whale. His debut EP Feeling Today is out 11/9 via Western Vinyl. MP3 :: Botony - Agave

We were asked to participate in Rubber Gloves' FREE WEEK right as everyone gets back in the school vibe and to handpick a few bands to showcase at our show September 4th. Mind Spiders are an obvious one-side project of one of local punk legends Marked Men , we've already been shoving in your face for awhile now . Sunnybrook and Melting Season are both associates of Denton musical ensemble Sleep Whale -both bands run the gamit of soundscapes, with Sunnybrook's songs being much more blown-out with thick-set contruction and foggy electronic samples while Melting Season [...]

Sleep Whale , who run in circles with the likes of Sunnybrook and Abacus, are just one of a handful of homegrown bands who have caught the eye of local tastemaker Chris Cantalini and his beloved Gorilla vs Bear blog , and in turn the esteemed Pitchfork --who always seem to pay close attention to Cantalini's tastes--have featured the band as well. Wondering what all the hype is about? See for yourself in person when the band takes the stage at The Loft on May 9th. And you can do so for free [...]

At the risk of sounding like the meteorologists that seems to get it right, only 50% of the time, but I see nothing but blue skies for the rest of the week. Spring maybe around the corner, but it's been a bit damp/snowy 'round these parts, and I put together another "Sad Bastard" mix for your listening pleasures. We've all seen moments in cinema where music adds that indescribable sensation, that unexplainable bliss where all you can do is sit helplessly as your body and soul are attached to the screen. It might come during a moment of sheer comedy - Geto Boys blasting as a fax machine is massacred in Office Space , or the entire reenactment of "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Wayne and Garth in Wayne's World . On the other end of the spectrum, a song can give a scene that somber overtone unachievable with acting alone. Richie's suicide attempt in The Royal [...]

NOTE: I didn't include singles for 2010 albums like "Cousins" and "Norway" because in my mind they are 2010 songs. So that's why they are not in the list. Also, I considered Local Natives a 2009 release since I was following them since last year and heard their album via the UK release. Similarly, that is why an album like the Rural Alberta Advantage has no songs on here. Because I included them in my list last year! 100 . John Frusciante – Song To The Siren - The (newly) ex-Red Hot [...]

25. Caspian – Tertia Opening with a whisper and ending with a snarlingly epic conclusion. Perhaps the theme of the album is an ideal reflection of Caspian themselves, a band that insists on finding its own way and settles for nothing less than instrumental perfection. Came across this album released in November a few weeks back from North Texas' own Sleep Whale and I have to say I am really loving this album so far. Just a great, unique, sweeping sound mixing simple instrumentation into epic soundscapes with lo-fi dreamy vocals. It all comes together extremely well on this album and this is easily one of my favorite releases of the year. The songs wander and careen through cavernous sounding effects and instruments where it sounds very intimate and distant at the same time. There are strings, there are very electronic [...]

From their just released album Houseboat on Western Vinyl Records Since 2006 Sleep Whale (formerly known as Mom) have become a mainstay of the fruitful north Texas music scene. With their first full-length release Houseboat the band solidifies their position as creative leaders and innovators amongst their peers. Much like their first EP Little Brite, the album pairs Joel North's deft guitar work and fluid cello playing with Bruce Blay's impeccable ability to weave percussion, field recordings, guitar, bass, and violin [...]

Confluence. Concordance. Synchronicity. Happenstance. A broad feeling that the universe has a plan, that everything (to quote the great poet Lauryn Hill) is everything. You know how I roll: in general I think all of that stuff is junk, a remnant of our human predeliction to ascribe consequence to subsequence. I'm of the opinion that we're just drifting through the cosmos, knocking up against stuff in a purely random and dissonant fashion; the truth is that there is no truth. The events of this morning, however, have rocked that foundation of anarchic underpinning. How do I explain the [...]

Discovering new bands that I enjoy is one of my favorite pleasures in life. What's even more awesome is when one finds you when you aren't even looking. I've got the folks over at Western Vinyl to thank for introducing me to Sleep Whale , as the label recently sent me a copy of their new album. A lot of the stuff I get sent ends up being pretty mediocre, and most of it doesn't get posted about on this site, but I really love this band's new album Houseboat . The album is a mix [...]
