No one buys albums anymore, goes the music industry truism. And yet, for all that the format's commercial viability may or may not be on the wane, sitting and listening to a great album from start to finish is one of the greatest pleasures that music can bring. Flavorwire recently got to thinking about how one might build a record collection if you really only did buy one record a year. So here's the result of our thought exercise: 50 albums you really should own, one a year from 1963 until the present day. Yes, of course this mean things [...]

When I first picked up the plank of wood I had the cheek to call a guitar, I hadn't yet mastered changing from a D to an A and back again before I realised something was missing. I needed something, anything, to disguise the bum notes from the badly-played chords I was trying to strangle out of my instrument at parent-bothering volume through my wee practice amp. That something was the fuzzbox. What a revelation! I could play along to most of The Buzzcocks ' What Do I Get and mangle a passable version of Everybody's [...]

So you know how Questlove is teaching a course on classic albums at NYU? Well, thankfully for everyone not able to attend his classes, we're seeing some video from his and Henry Weinger's lesson on Sly & The Family Stone classic There's A Riot Goin' On . From the theme of the album to how certain elements of each track came together, Questo apparently knows it all. If you consider yourself a music nerd even in the slightest or just love Sly Stone's music, you need to watch this. Someone get us some more clips from the [...]

Brittany Howard must have to pinch herself from time to time to make sure that she's not dreaming. The Alabama Shakes have been on quite the hot streak of late - making their SNL debut, earning three Grammy nominations and they have a monster summer tour lined up. Next up for Howard will be her first release on Jack White's Third Man Records label, which sees the Shakes front woman teaming up with Ruby Amanfu (White's duet partner on Love Interruption from his solo album), for a very cool sounding Blue Series Single that will be released [...]
Friday morning commutes are always hard because you know you have to get through a whole work day with as much help as possible (which for me includes buckets of caffeine, cigarettes, and good music). So this is my offering for tomorrow morning in which you can test how far you can push that subwoofer... Bobby Busnach - Check out this guy's Soundcloud if you like 70s soul and funk. SOOOOO good And now to go through over 1,000 new music PR releases because I'm finally taking this seriously [...]

I know it seems like our D'Angelo posts are all "He's almost done with the album, you guys!" But to be fair, we haven't really heard such urgency about the record like we have today. Questlove spoke to Billboard yesterday on his way to Asia and revealed that the follow-up to 20002s Voodoo is just about done. Actually, it's 99 percent finished and they are "just tightening up the loose ends." Questlove then noted that if the album, which is rumored to be titled James River , isn't [...]

This track is literally dripping with soul, mainly thanks to the passionate singing of legendary R&B songstress Mary J. Blige. Earlier this year, she reinterpreted "Everyday People" by San Francisco soul funk ensemble Sly and the Family Stone . But in this track, Philadelphia nu-disco pioneer DJ Apt One cleans it up and lays it down to make it more dancefloor friendly. "I made this for use in my sets the last few months," he says . "If you are a funky person, or [...]
This post is to serve as a link to the post that I just made with this week's countdown. There were bonus songs I wanted to label, but I blew past the character limit. So, here's a link to that post. More content to come soon :)

MJB connects with three legendary R&B producers on newly unearthed track "Everyday People". The illustrious production trio selects for Arrested Development's '92 "People Everyday" version of Sly and the Family Stone's "Everyday People". A sample of a sample. (The Grammys, the more samples.) For her part, Ms. Blige spits feel good winner line after line. So so def. Mary J. Blige - Everyday People (Prod. Pharrell, Jermaine Dupri & Bryan Cox) Mary J. I heard that Andy Williams died today. Lots of fond memories of watching his variety TV Show in the 1960s. The man had a great voice. Here was my favorite.... When I was in Junior High school, we sang the hell out of that song. Andy's show featured a lot of great music. Here is a great clip of the Jackson 5 on the show in 1970. Even at this age you could tell that young Michael was destined for bigger things. Enjoy..... [...]

By 1967, Sly and the Family Stone had just signed with a major label and began to plan their debut album. Leader Sly Stone was already a proven hit-maker; he wrote and produced Bobby Freeman ’s “ C’mon and Swim ,” and produced “ Laugh, Laugh ” and “ Just A Little ” for the Beau Brummels . Sly had built a band that reflected the diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area: men and women, multi-racial, with musical styles and backgrounds that included soul, R&B, gospel and pop. [...]
The new Dan Deacon album was released yesterday, and it's perhaps the last thing we would have expected from a man once so interested in the idea of music as a purely sonic entity, devoid of any narrative or greater meaning: it's a loose concept album about America. Deacon has written some interesting stuff about the ideas behind the album, which is entitled simply America , on his website , noting that "The inspiration for the music was my love of cross-country travel, seeing the landscapes of the United States, going from east to [...]

Summertime... best time for listening to music! / photo by Brittney Bollay It’s time again for Friday on My Mind , the weekly blog post with videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and the fine people at King 5 News. Today is all about Songs for the Summer. Wednesday officially marked the Summer Solstice and while warmer temperatures have arrived throughout most of the country, Seattle continues to teeter between grey skies and glimmers of sun rays. As we wait with bated breath for the summer [...]

"Shadrach" was the Beastie Boys ' third single from Paul's Boutique (said single pictured above), but it's best known as an album cut. In his excellent 33 1/3 treatise on Paul's , Dan LeRoy calls "Shadrach" the album's most important track (p. 97), and its importance is inherently bound up in the importance of the Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego mythology. If you're unfamiliar with the Bible, let me break [...]

There are so many classic tunes to choose from when you talk about Sly And The Family Stone . Throughout the late 602s and 702s they peddled a heady mix of soul, funk, rock and psychedelia to make tunes that earned them an induction into the Music Hall of Fame in the 902s. Tunes such as "Everyday People", "Family Affair" and "Thank You" have been covered and sampled on many occasions from their release until today. The multi ethnic line up broken down barriers and were as good live as they were on record. Today we go [...]
Singer Catherine "Cat" Harris-White and rapper Stasia "Stas" Irons, otherwise known as THEEsatisfaction , met in 2006 while attending the University of Washington. Stas first encountered Cat while attending her open mic performances. Initially intimidated by her powerhouse performances, it took her some time to drum up the courage to to approach her, but once contact was established, the pair embarked on a partnership that would find them featured as guest performers on Shabazz Palaces' 2011 album, "Black Up" . This collaboration led them to being signed to [...]
