In 1981, Simon James and Nick Webb formed the instrumental jazz-pop guitar duo Acoustic Alchemy. If you hear the words "instrumental jazz-pop" and want to run and hide, that's understandable. The truth is, it's been thirty years, and while change is a given when you're talking about that kind of time, the duo does still sound stuck in the eighties. Neither of the original members is in it anymore. James left early on, and Webb died in '98 of pancreatic cancer. Greg Carmichael has been in the duo for years, and Miles Gilderdale became Webb's replacement in '96. Acoustic Alchemy's [...]
Actually, disco never died. It was hiding in soundclouds under the category "nu disco." Tricky bastards. Same concept as traditional disco - nu disco has catchy loops, funky guitar chords, trumpets (if necessary), and bass lines more ecstasy-inducing than a zj. However, nu disco sounds much more electronic and like it belongs in 2011. If you [...]
Doklands loves Arrington de Dionyso. In the cynical showbusiness world of music he is that rarity, a genuine gold-plated loon. Sometimes he's simultaneously channelling Captain Beefheart and Birthday Party era Nick Cave as frontman of Old Time Relijun. Sometimes he's singing in Malaysian to attract girls. And sometimes he just picks up a saxophone and makes noises with it while a smooth jazz radio station plays in the background. At least, that's what he did for the hard-to-find 2001 album Smooth Jazz Vagina . Everything is mercilessly distorted and shockingly lo-fi. [...]
Has anyone else's week been incredibly, painfully long? I thought so. Nyan cat makes everything better: now with a smooth jazz twist. What is your favorite Nyan Cat variation and/or talk about how Nyan Cat has positively affected your life.
Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny revisits some favorite songs in his new album.

Era exactamente isto que tinha em mente hoje à noite. Era exactamente isto que precisava esta madrugada. O Chet Baker é um artista ímpar. E eu nem sabia o que sentir primeiro, a foto ou a canção... This was exactly what I was in the mood for tonight. Chet Baker is something else. I didn't quite know what to experience first, the song or the photograph... You go to my head Link to photo on Flickr Massalo.net [...]

Supdafuh - Act of Faith Ft. CL Smooth (Smooth Jazz Mix) Buy The Digital Version or Order the Vinyl on Bandcamp With the legendary CL Smooth and incredible underground sensation Eternia, Supafuh strikes back in 2011. The French artist of the MC Solaar's (french dopest MC of the 90's) school set the bar very high, after a year 2010 already hyper-active (an EP and his first album 10 ANS TROP TARD). With its evocative title, the 12 "vinyl JUST [...]

I consider her this blog's sweetheart, since she was one of the first artists I talked about back in the faraway year of 2009. She was the Lounge's 8th post, when the blog was taking its first timid but confident steps. Now, two years and 451 posts later, I come back to let your ears peek into another window of Ive Mendes' soothing music, due to the release of her new double-album, Magnetism. Thus, the Brazilian Sade takes over my brain with her alluring brand of intimate bossa nova and smooth jazz, where her voice shines through no [...]

After such tumultuous day like today, spent glued in front of BBC and CNN where the only music on offer were the chants of the valiant Egyptian demonstrators in Tahrir Square, nothing like pure, late night jazz to help cap a historic day and take your mind off things for a bit. My aural elixir of choice tonight is Sara Serpa, a stunning Portuguese jazz musician introduced to me by Mr. Philip Graham. You would probably not even know she is Portuguese as her style of singing jazz is usually devoid of words; rather, she uses her voice as an [...]

Steely Dan - Babylon Sisters (1980)

Encontro-me ainda ressacado de tanto jazz de qualidade. Overdosed on jazz . Desde o fecho da segunda edição deste Festival, tenho estado a viajar pela minha memória, revisitando as actuações, relembrando as músicas, tentando reviver as emoções. Qual delas a mais marcante? Qual o momento mais delicioso nestes três dias inesquecíveis? Abaixo está a minha eleição dos melhores momentos do Luanda International Jazz Festival. I'm still hungover from so much quality jazz. [...]
Can seventy-five million fans be wrong? Kenny G - Music - Arts - Soul - 1960s

Over the next couple of weeks the Lounge will highlight all the artists that will be present in this year's Luanda International Jazz Festival, many times using posts that have already been featured here. The line-up is mouthwatering and includes such jazz virtuosos as George Benson and Ronny Jordan, funky beats by Freshlyground and 340ml, coladera and batuque by Lura, Cameroonian tunes by Blick Bassy...the list goes on. [...]
