Released on Toolroom Records' Amsterdam Dance Event compilation for 2011, Mark Knight and Manuel De La Mare's 'Snapshot' is one track not to miss. Both producers are undisputed tech giants, and their collaborative effort certainly stands out amidst the showcase. Huge synths battle the gritty tech structure, combining to form a massive effort from the Toolroom head honcho and young Italian upstart who co-owns 303lovers and Hotfingers with Alex Kenji. This new Tim Hecker release is composed of sketch pieces recorded in 2010 in preparation for what would become the Ravedeath, 1972 album. All of the compositions are piano driven and minimal in nature. This is not a new Tim Hecker album, but rather a peek behind the curtains into the working process. That these [...]

CLICK IMAGE TO VIEW VIDEO The official full length video from Chicago producer/emcee Rashid Hadee for his buzz record entitled The Dreamer. This very cinematically Hip Hop piece was directed by Thaione Davis of JUSTANOTHERCANVAS. The visuals to The Dreamer are best described as an artistic snap shot of movement, expression and passionate delivery by Rashid Hadee the emcee, combined with a myriad of beautifully captured back drops of Chicago's downtown. The Windy City skyline plays the co-star in this dramatic, yet sincere outcry by the artist who also doubles as the producer of [...]
Genres are an artifice by which we categorize musical sounds. Closely related genres often overlap. These "crossover" albums are sought by many an artist. A successful country artist can have a hit that also hits the folk or rock charts. A soft rocker may also make the jazz charts. Genre cubbyholes, while loved by record labels as they allow the company to market to a particular consumer group, actually may hinder the development of music. For example, if a song is characterized as "Christian Rock" it is unlikely to make the "Heavy Metal" rock [...]
The eyes of the world are on London this week; a city engulfed in looting, riots and destruction. For the past few nights, we citizens have been held under siege by an unruly band of teenagers and young adults, mobilizing and organizing their criminal activity via social networking. As I ...

It's cliche to start any introduction by defining a word, but in this case it seems appropriate. After all, how many people actually know what "lollapalooza" means? Sure, by music festival standards, we know it as the annual event put on in Chicago each August by Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell. But its true definition, at least according to Merriam-Webster, is "one that is extraordinarily impressive," and while we can't be sure Ferrell envisioned today's version of Lollapalooza when he first named the festival 20 years ago, its title has never proved more true. Sure, especially [...]

The band really wanted to call the album "Louder Than F**k" Following up on the fantastic feedback from last weeks "Snapshot of College Radio in the 70s" post, I thought I would make this weeks edition relevant to one of the best shows I have seen here in San Francisco. Soundgarden played here last week, and after a decade plus hiatus, the band is back and sounding better than when I saw them in their 902s heyday. With that being said, here is a vinyl gem that I found while thumbing through [...]

A few years ago I struck vinyl gold while living in Dallas, TX. A friend of mine from Good Records ( Chris Penn aka DJ Cee Pee ), put together two boxes of hand picked metal records for me. He had just picked up several hundred used records from a Dallas college radio station as they were throwing them out and going digital. Although many of the classic albums included had some pretty good wear going on with the sleeves, the actual vinyl was in excellent condition. It was a vast selection of 70s and 80s metal; a gift from the vinyl gods above. Back [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Pop Culture Kevin Winter, Getty Images for NCLR / Jordan Strauss, WireImage The artist still known as Prince really doesn't like it when people take his picture. He's a notorious control freak when it comes to his image and his team has instructed ushers at all of his 'Welcome 2 America' tour stops to vigilantly enforce the no-photo rule, even if people try to snap them on [...]

Photo courtesy of Wendy and Lisa . Snapshots by Wendy and Lisa It's no secret that Wendy and Lisa made a huge creative contribution to the songs of their former boss Prince (as members of his band The Revolution). Since going solo in late 1986, Wendy and Lisa have continued funking out, but have also made great textured music while exploring the genres of rock, pop and of course, the countless musical scores they've composed for film and TV. Wendy and Lisa are looking back on their illustrious career, but [...]

[Photo by stjnky ] Saturday already, and we are going to miss this place. Start the day at Spin watching Portugal the Man and filling our bags with free popcorn (for reasons to be explained later) La Zona Rosa is chaotic. I'm stuck in a ten inch square, caged by Matt's cymbals, so much tripping over ensues. Great BBQ and free bloody Mary's adds to the danger. Throw everything in the van and rush to our final show. The guitar piñata is brimming with popcorn and nuts and any [...]

It's a city turned musical madhouse, an astounding limitless social gathering, an incredible city turned into a new kind of city, with its specific yet diverse demographic and constrained yet amazing lifestyle. It's performers all being judged by the business-like circus performers in some kind of straightjacket holding all the cards, texting a friend from four feet away in silence like strangers, beautiful websites made easy but not knowing what to do with them, a conference where you're taught about the importance of facebook friending knowing there's free beer outside - Knowing you will see at least [...]

Meet the Goldheart Assembly, who we played with at Reading and Leeds last year. Great band, fear our gig schedules conflict, but we hope we can do some shows together soon. Giddiness ensues at various locations around town, I eat the best cream corn known to man and sample the Texan dirty martinis. Been looking forward to this moment ; Edwyn Collins playing in a tiny club called Nuvelo. Great set, very nice telecaster tone and an unexpected chance to meet the man himself. [...]

Yeah, yeah. I've been slow as can be to get our SXSW content up on the site. We're working on the Buzzsession we filmed at the Eventbrite Party , and are having illustrations done for the 10 bands/musicians that blew our minds. In the meantime, check out a few photo galleries. I got in a little bit of trouble for bringing my DSLR (removable lens camera) to approved SXSW venues, but I still managed to sneak it by security for Cults , The Dodos , Givers , Bear Hands , Jonquil , [...]

Sean : Our history with The Joy Formidable on BIYL is a long and wonderful one. A fact attested to by our archives, which indicate we have well over 45 posts devoted to the band, going back nearly 4 years! I've always felt one of the things that we try to do that might set us apart from other blogs out there is sticking with the bands we love, instead of deserting them after one album and moving on to the next big thing. The Joy Formidable have proved themselves a band worth sticking with, and we couldn't have [...]
