Up tonight is another haunting installment from Calgary's favorite indie/experimental-rock artist Chad VanGaalen . VanGaalen demonstrates his talent as an animator/illustrator with the video that accompanies Molten Light , and allows us to be pleasantly horrified both visually and sonically. The song itself can be found on VanGaalen's 3rd full-length effort Soft Airplane , released in September of 2008 via Flemish Eye and Sub Pop record labels. The album would successfully traverse the Canadian gauntlet known as the Polaris Music Prize jury in 2009 and find it's way onto the 10-album shortlist; [...]

This morning's song is from my fellow Calgarian Chad VanGaalen . Rabid Bits of Time became one my favorite Chad VanGaalen pieces after watching him perform it at this year's Polaris Music Prize gala; it was one of the most intense performances I have ever witnessed. The song can be found on VanGaalen's moody third full-length album Soft Airplane , released in September of 2008. Like many of his songs, Rabid Bits of Time dances with the universal concept of our mortality, and the consequence of said mortality. For more from Soft Airplane, check out [...]

Tonight's post features another tune from the two-time Polaris Music Prize nominated Calgarian Chad VanGaalen . City of Electric Light can be found on VanGaalen's third full-length album Soft Airplane , released in September of 2008. In 2007, VanGaalen's Skelliconnection album was short-listed for the Polaris Music Prize, eventually bowing out to the winner Close to Paradise , from Patrick Watson . This year, Soft Airplane goes up against an array of amazing Canadian albums from the likes of Metric , Joel Plaskett , Hey Rosetta! , [...]

The highly anticipated announcement of the long-list for the Polaris Prize was made today, and my prediction regarding Chad VanGaalen 's Soft Airplane turned out to be correct. This is by no means a reflection on my skills as a music blogger, the album is just that damn good. Anyways, in honor of the announcement, I decided to post a song from another album that was long-listed today. I'm confused comes to us from the indie-rock duo Handsome Furs and their their second full-length album Face Control , [...]

How about those Red Wings? They are just so solid front-to-back, it is really really disgusting. Anyways, tonight's tune comes to us from the Calgary, Alberta (where I live) indie-rock artist Chad VanGaalen . Willow Tree can be found as the opening track to VanGaalen's third album Soft Airplane , released in September of 2008. Not only is VanGaalen an incredibly gifted singer/songwriter, he is also a highly acclaimed illustrator and animator, with many of his pieces being featured across Canada. I'm not completely certain when the cut-off for the Polaris Prize is, but if Soft [...]
![Chad VanGaalen: Molten Light [Video]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1359983_lg.jpg)
Written by Fense The animation in the video for "Molten Light" by Chad VanGaalen reminds me a lot of the animation signature of the late 80s and early 90s. You know the kind - gross for the sake of being gross; a sort of, well, faux art. There were plenty of bands from that era that slapped the crap on their album covers - Ugly Kid Joe and Big Black are a few that come to mind. But here, there's a key "fortunate" element, and that is its association with the [...]
posted by Matt: Totally awesome.

While our goal for The Breakdown is to allow artists to demystify their albums in their own words, it just wouldn't be Chad VanGaalen if all mystery were to be revealed. Weighing in on a fraction less than half of the tracks that make up his amazing new record, Soft Airplane , VanGaalen does reveal some humorously personal bits of info about the inspirations behind some of his latest songs, and frankly, we'll take what we can get. [...]

Chad VanGaalen Soft Airplane (09.2008, Sub Pop) Verdict: Glorious After releasing two of the most enjoyable albums known to mankind, I had galaxies full of expectations for the new Chad VanGaalen album. Somehow, all those expectations were fulfilled and then some. Chad VanGaalen is a genius, and not only that, his music genuinely makes me feel good. Not just a happy good, but some deep cosmic feeling that everything is going to turn out and that the world aint so bad type of good. I guess that might be weird considering most all his [...]

Chad VanGaalen, Soft Airplane (Sup Pop, 2008) MP3 : "Willow Tree" Calgary's Chad VanGaalen is one of those prolific artists who crosses mediums and creates for the sake of creating. Whether it's painting, doing animation, or writing and recording as a one-man indie music machine, chances are he's working on something at any given moment. Soft Airplan e, his third full length, is an array of styles and ideas that range from haunting folkie acoustic numbers [...]

New Wax It's the albums that require multiple listens that usually yield the most reward. I'm on my tenth rotation of Chad VanGaalen's new album Soft Airplane and while I'd hesitate to say I've completely wrapped my head around the material, I'm going to give this review a (most likely insufficient) attempt. Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, VanGaalen is a freakishly talented person. In addition to his impressive work as a musician, he's also a highly regarded illustrator and animator. His explosive creative energy is always at play [...]

I've had my official first listen of Chad Vangaalen's album Soft Airplane, which is due to come out on September 9th, and I've been in a complete mind numbing musical daze since. The album has transported me into this crazy dream world, filled with cartoon characters and evil monsters. Earlier, I wrote a post about Chad Van's performance at Sled Island, where he played many of the album tracks live, and now, after hearing the recorded album, I appreciate it all so much more. Chad reaches this complete perfection in the album, he hits every different genre of [...]

Ok, so maybe I'm jumping the gun on this one, seeing as Soft Airplane -the 3rd full-length from Chad VanGaalen -doesn't come out until Sept. 9 , but I just couldn't resist. What can I say? I'm looking forward to the album and, if "Willow Tree" is any indication, it's going to be a great addition to VanGaalen's already admirable catalogue. Undeniably haunting and serene, this early teaser-tune perfectly exemplifies the ethereal quality that is ever-present in VanGaalen's work-a ghostly anthem for retired spectres content to lounge under a tree in the afterlife.
