Anyone who's basked in the audio glow of Sam Phillips accepts or even embraces her idiosyncrasies: as on Magic For Everybody , when she advises, "Don't let perfect" (instead of "perfection") make you blind/To this beautiful world/Oh, oh, oh, don't erase your crooked lines/Take your mistakes and come with me!" Since Phillips apparently seeded several acres of her garden with the Beatles circa Rubber Soul , we're also used to her starting a vocal line in a low, near-growl (kind of like John Lennon), as on Broken [...]
Haste The Day have set a September 13, 2011 release date for their forthcoming farewell CD+DVD titled Haste the Day vs. Haste the Day . The album, which features members both past and present, spans the band's catalogue of six releases and nearly 10 years. It was recorded live at the all-ages music venue Rhino's in Bloomington, Indiana., on June 29, 2010, also serving as the album release show for Attack of the Wolf King , the band's final studio album. It was engineered and mixed by Brian Thorburn of [...]
I wasn't really anticipating spending an obnoxious amount of time restoring my iPod this evening, but Cortney Tidwell kept me company and I was reminded of how much I really love her. So much so that I am a bit selfish and would like her to release a new album every year. Don't you wish that would happen? This Nashville born musician is a natural, her music is dark and beautiful. I have been listening to Cortney Tidwell for years and her music is just as good as it was the first time I [...]
Yesterday, metalcore act Gwen Stacy called it a day. The band posted this on their blog: After six years, nineteen countries, countless US tours, two albums, and an EP, Gwen Stacy has decided call it quits. We feel like now is the best time to end the band and pursue other options and directions in life. We would like to thank everyone who has been involved with the bands career over the years. A few of the members will be starting new projects and we will be updating our pages as these projects start to [...]

Sam Phillips: Solid State - Songs from the Long Play
Phillips manages to create a conflicting compilation album admired for the beauty of the music -- but with a disappointing physical packaging. What Sam Phillips did with Long Play was open up the possibilities for rethinking the standardization of album production and consumption. Not bound by physicalities, Phillips created a virtual world which mapped out the creative progression of her artistic output. She let the listener in. Instead of keeping her fans at an arms length, as is the unintended outcome of more traditional album releases, she invited them to join in on the fun - to...

Sam Phillips - Solid State
Sam Phillips - Her major label deal and marriage to T-Bone Burnett are now a few years behind her, but no matter. The eclectic and quirkily winsome songwriter returns with a wonderful 13-track album culled from her prolific yearlong "Long Play" project consisting of five self-produced EP's and one full-length (whew) // Release : Solid State (June 7) // Sounds like : despite the prodigious output of Long Play, the quality (and stylistic diversity) of Solid State reconfirms Phillips reputation as both an imaginative and risk-taking writer who can also build [...]

Live & Photos: The Chariot @ London Camden Underworld – 21 March 2011
There was an entire gang of Thrash Hits writers and photographers at the London stopover of The Chariot's recent UK tour, but we've left it to Tom Doyle to describe how last Monday night in Camden went down, and trusted the lens of Ben Gibson to show you how it did in full technicolour glory. Six things [...]

NORMA JEAN'S CORY BRANDAN TAKES ON SOLID STATE
I haven't personally really dug a Norma Jean album since 20052s O God, The Aftermath, and even that release, I thought, was inferior to the band's prior offering, Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child. But just because I'm not the biggest Norma Jean fan in the world doesn't mean I think the artists involved aren't [...]

Oh, Sleeper guitarist explains band finances and challenges for "mid-level" bands
Solid State Records ' Oh, Sleeper guitarist Shane Blay posted an interesting article on his Facebook explaining some of the challenges faced by "Mid-Level Bands" when touring these days. The musician breaks down the various costs faced by bands including merchandise, booking agents, managers and more and shows why few bands can sustain themselves at that level or often lose money. For the past 5 years my brothers in Oh, Sleeper and myself have sacrificed our lives, our time, relationships, birthdays, holidays, health(haha) to travel around and play shows for our fans. Not to say [...]
