It was a wonderful and packed night at Mavericks. Land of Talk put on an amazing show in Ottawa. It's been awhile since Liz Powell played a Ottawa show in support of the album Cloak and Cipher ( Ranked #7 in the Best of 2010 Canadian albums ). Very surprised that it was packed and sold out. Land of Talk's Fun and Laughter is a compact set of four tracks following the rich vein of their 2008 album, Some Are Lakes . Elizabeth Powell chants her way through the band's off-kilter pop waves. Today's American Thanksgiving post come to us from the Montreal indie-rock trio Land of Talk . The band was formed during front-woman Elizabeth Powell's time at Concordia University, where she met former members Mark Wheaton and Chris McCarron (currently playing with The Dears ) in 2007; the lineup has since evolved to include bassist Joe Yarmush and drummer Andrew Barr. In an old church outside of Montreal, Land of Talk set up to record new songs for their October release Some are Lakes. This seemingly simple ten track album is actually an intricately weaved recollection of life's ups and downs. Somehow and at some point I came upon Land Of Talk's EP Applause Cheer Boo Hiss a ways back and cranked it louder than I should have. The soulful fury of lead singer Elizabeth Powell struck one of those so-called chords and I had to respond with extra volume. Land of Talk -- who are opening for Broken Social Scene at the Gargoyle on October 18 -- worked with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon on its upcoming full-length, Some Are Lakes . Accordingly, the CD (which I've heard in full) is quite a bit more nuanced and intimate than the band's debut EP. Think more the atmospherics of Denali and Cat Power, and less Pixies snarl.
