Today's song of the day is from Zachary Lucky and his track "Back in the Fall" from his upcoming album Saskatchewan (some say EP, some say LP, some say who the hell cares, just let us hear it already). The song is simply fantastic. Whether it is the lazy banjo, the pedal steel or the honest delivery (when his voice just starts to crack when he first sings "Back in the Fall" - it's killer). The song is seems like it is not necessarily a story about a past relationship rather than a mantra to himself [...]
Geoff Barrow never stops. The Portishead man's Invada label goes from strength to strength, with a new compilation demonstrating the imprint's ever-broadening horizons. 'Your Breath Smells Of Paco Rabanne', by Australian producer Katalyst , is the standout from that collection - a Beatles-sampling oddity that manages to sound like Madlib, Beans, and Dabrye all together. Katalyst will also appear on Barrow's forthcoming hip-hop project. The first release under his new Quakers moniker is out on Stones Throw later [...]
English duo The Big Pink released their second record Future This a few weeks ago. I wasn't sure what to expect from the group after their hit album A Brief History of Love . Would they be a one album wonder like Glasvegas or will they build on that album into something better? Luckily for us, the new record expands on the Big Pink sound and the result is a really good album. The album has surprisingly dropped some of the shoe-gaze/wall of sound elements that made their first album popular, and replaced it with [...]

Outfit have the potential to be a very good band. Their early triple-punch of 'Every Night…', 'Vehicles', and the excellent 'Two Islands' demonstrated a group of songwriters with fantastically broad reference points. One moment they sounded like early Genesis, the next like a tunefully glum Aztec Camera. Now, surprise new single 'Dashing In Passing' could be the work of an entirely different band. With vocals that sound like an (even more) unhinged Prince, and bass so claustrophobically heavy it threatens to suffocate the track altogether, it is evidence the Outfit's horizons are even [...]
Iceland might be in an unrecoverable recession, but judging by the happiness that exudes from six piece band Of Monsters and Men 's music, you would think that it's all parties and good times on this quaint little island. Exhibiting upbeat folk-rock meets chaotic group chorus sensibilities, the Iceland band has literally exploded (like the volcano) in terms of positive press the past few weeks and have clearly paced themselves as one of the front runners for "most absurdly packed debut showcase" at SXSW . It's easy to see why they are [...]
Today's song is "Arcane Effigies" by Sharks . This song is off the UK punk band's debut album No Gods out March 20th on Rise Records. The album, produced by Brian McTernan (The Explosion, Hot Water Music, Cave In), swims between the rules and regulations of the iconoclastic chaos of punk rock and British indie rock. The band has a great list of vocal endorsers, including Social Distortion, The Wedding Present, The Gaslight Anthem, and Mick Jones. They were also included in NME's "100 New Bands For 20123 http://bit.ly/zHHs2C. The band just wrapped up the Fall Alternative Press [...]
I might be listening to a little too much D'Angelo at the minute - but really, the beginning of this sounds exactly like a half-time version of the intro to 'Devil's Pie', doesn't it? Yoofs are a Bournemouth band who like reverb, whammy bars, and metallic distortion. 'Hazy Days', out today as a free download on The Sounds of Sweet Nothing, is a summertime waltz that immediately brings to mind the Electric Soft Parade , but that sounds like it was recorded [...]
Trust is Toronto based duo Robert Alfons and Maya Posteps, who judging by their press photos, are also daytime Urban Outfitter models. I have a hard time deciphering what their actual name is but I think they should make it more distinct since there is also a French and Belgium band with the same name. Either way, the duo was signed to Arts and Craft last year and will release their debut record at some point this year. In preparation for this luminous event, the band will be playing a host of shows in early [...]
Today's song is "Deadbeat" by Lightning Love . Lightning Love are a young trio from Ypsilanti, MI that started out when they were 16. Comprised of Ben Collins, and siblings Aaron and Leah Diehl, they've received lots of local attention in the Detroit music scene and signed with Quiet Scientific Records (Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr./ Cotton Jones). This is the first single from the band's new EP entitled Girls Who Look Like Me which is out now. The band is offering a free download of this song now on their bandcamp page. Listen [...]
Does anyone remember when twitter had #musicmonday? Me neither. We first wrote about Australian act San Cisco last year , and then they released an EP earlier for which Halley did a song of the day for. Well, we are back again! San Cisco's EP Awkward has been steadily in my rotation this year. It's one of those sneaky rotation events that you don't necessarily expect but are glad it turned out that way. I've been trying to figure out why I like the the EP so much and I've finally [...]
Andrew Sisk (Photo by Scott Munn) Today's song of the day is from one Andrew Sisk, who was passed on to me from Matt over at Pigeon Row (see them & their full list of clients here ) and I am greatfull this brooding singer songwriter's newest album is now with me. The album, Treelines, was released on January 31st and is nine thick-with-character songs recorded " ...in his apartment in Montreal with his son Elliott sleeping on his lap during vocal takes, and quietly watching him record classical [...]
Had your fill of Radiohead remixes yet this year? Thought so. Well give it just five minutes more, because this Young Montana? rework of 'Idioteque' is actually brilliant. From 2009 but only just unearthed, it takes the deranged, skitty original (perhaps the best thing the Oxford band ever did?) and recasts it as a major key delight. Swooning melodies, a lilting bassline, and beautiful, thudding kicks combine to create something far, far too sunny for February.
