Brooklyn's Woods has a new track out, "Find Them Empty." This track finds the folk rock band moving towards a style that I've always wished they would explore more directly: The stormy psychedelic rock sounds of the 1960s. With brazen electric guitars signaling a deviation from their freak folk past, the band wastes no time in delivering this slice of lo-fi 60s-style garage rock. In addition to those heavily reverbed guitars, singer Jeremy Earl's multi-tracked vocals really sell the retro sound. Although it lacks the odd keyboard sounds and experimental tape manipulation that defined earlier Woods releases, the jangly "Find [...]

Maybe it's a stretch to use the term "supergroup" with a band like The Babies . That moniker calls to mind big groups of big stars, like CSNY or The Traveling Wilburys or, these days, Monsters of Folk . But for fans of modern indie/lo-fi rock in all of its glory, putting Cassie Ramone of the Vivian Girls and Kevin Morby of Woods into one band just may feel like such a supergroup. Juxtaposing the heavy girl-power rock n' roll of Vivian Girls with the jammy, psychedelic folk-rock [...]
On its latest release, Woods make their sound a little sunnier with brighter guitar leads and attitudes. But some of the songs here just feel too unfinished to really feel memorable or exciting for me. I dig this band a lot, but I almost feel like I've fallen off the wagon on this one. Their past several records, in my opinion, have been fantastic. This feels like it lives in the shadow of Woods' previous material because of its underwhelming execution, half-baked songs, and melodies that are eerily similar to that [...]
There's a sense of triumphant happiness on Woods' new album At Echo Lake barely hinted at in the mournful dirges of their prior albums. As if Jeremy Earl and crew had, in the midst of another droning bit of neo-campfire folk, had realized that, "hot damn, we're on the road to success." Smiles on their [...]

This week on the show, we explore the Woods of Panama!Despite digging on Woods' 2007 LP At Rear House, I was a little slow on the uptake of their latest album, Songs of Shame. We've got tracks from that, and a peek at two upcoming 2K10 albums: Local Natives' Gorilla Manor and Surfer Blood's Astro Coast. We also explore Panamanian jazz, funk, and calypso from the '60s and '70s via a new
It's been a problematic few weeks for The Daily Choice and I. Where usually I spend my time informing you, the enthusiastic readers of Sound on the Sound, about the hippest, flashiest new music (spin that lazer beamed disco ball again!), as of late I've been nose-deep in to the oldies. Pushing aside the cobwebs [...]

MP3: Woods - Rain On Who isn't listening to Woods ? Songs Of Shame: great fucking record. I've been loving "Rain On", and is firmly placed in my memories as Summer 2009. Dig in.

Images via Auditory Threshold Finally, Saturday had arrived, and that meant only one thing to me: I would finally be seeing Kurt Vile and hearing the music that has been haunting my existence. I start most of my days with Constant Hitmaker and always end them with God Is Saying This To You... , with some other Kurt Vile songs in between. Today, I listened to "Freeway" for an hour straight. If you ask how this is possible, you should probably give the [...]
Finally, a music video to match the overall strangeness of Woods' music (ex: Songs of Shame ). Directed by Michael La Burt, this is about one of the most creative uses of stop motion I've ever seen--no offense to Gumby: Thx, P4K MP3s: Woods- "To Clean" Woods- "Rain On" [...]

WOODS , who release 'To Clean' as a 7" on Half Machine Records later in the year (with exclusive vinyl only b-side "Rain On, live on WVKR'), have given away the track on RCRD LBL, click here to download it. 'To Clean' is also available on the excellent new album 'Songs of Shame'
For many a many a many a many a months now I've certainly been knee deep in an almost obsessive love of all things dirty, noisy, gritty, garage-y and I've just been shoveling this love on to you, the readers of this fantastic site. Thus, the new album from Woods, Songs of Shame, has again [...]

Opening up with the sloppiest guitar solo this side of Westing and Musket, Woods return announcing with Songs of Shame that they are trying to "fight for what its worth." Their fight is worth listening to. Even if you not heard their previous albums, the recent wave of lo-fi musicianship and albums has prepared listeners for impassioned, sloppy songs. That is if you are not put off by the lack of polish; guitars do not reach the notes you'd expect, the vocals are saying something, but the words aren't pushed forward through the mix. [...]

Sunday listening, the wonky acid folk that is Brooklyn based Woods... Woods - Military Madness Buy the music here or more info or here

As the founders of Fuck It Tapes , the psychedelic/freak-folk outfit Woods have seen seen much of their roster move on to bigger press (Wavves, MV&EE, Vivian Girls, much more) but it doesn't seemed to have phased them much. These guys are hype darlings with some backbone, content to quietly perfect their craft and let the rest work itself out. Their upcoming Songs of Shame is more extroverted and less antiquated than 08's At Rear House , and is pushed out of the womb with such fervor that [...]

I've already mentioned how much I love Woods ' latest Captured Tracks 7" -- the b-side in particular -- and the band's stellar new full-length, Songs of Shame , is more of the same simple, breezy, and consistently awesome lo-fi psych-folk/pop (the label calls it road worn/windblown "skeletal psychedelia"). Highlights include the group's killer Graham Nash cover , and the fuzzy, pensively sad " Rain On ": mp3: woods :: rain on Songs [...]
