Big generalization. I like R&B, but I love Soul. The difference? Well . . . it's soul. Soul has it. R&B doesn't. In my small, over-generalizing mind, soul is the music of musicians, reaching down deep into their inner beings to tell a story. R&B is the province of producers sitting in the booth playing with vocal effects to make a buck. You can keep your Usher's, I'll take Maxwell. Not interested in Chris Brown, I'm into Bill Withers. Don't want Beyonce. I'll take Jill Scott. [...]

I had a nice little post all ready to go for today, then I rethought some of the tracks. To entertain you whilst I revamp, here are some new releases on LaLa I thought were worth pointing out: I posted the Tristen track "Eager For Your Love" a while back . It's available on the Deceivers Are Achievers EP, along with the excellent "Matchstick Murder." I think "Eager For Your Love" is the best [...]

It seems like forever since we all clambered aboard this music fueled contraption that takes us to such wondrous lands. If memory serves me right, last month's episode was somewhat abbreviated as most of my spare time was focused on a preparations for a Field Trip on the East Coast, and I couldn't go into great depth on some of the hidden gems lurking in the world of MySpace . So, now that I'm back in the saddle again (thank you for the screeching melody, Mr. Tyler,) and life is falling back into its normal routine, I've been able [...]

It wasn't that long ago that our friends at Miles High Promotions dropped a soul bomb into our lap, the surprising and deeply rich album by the The Soul of John Black . As you can imagine, it only took us a few microseconds to know we were hearing something pretty special, and only a few microseconds after that to ask the ever-talented John Bingham, the mastermind of The Soul of John Black, to come pay us a visit on our red interview couch. Now, most often our guests love to hang and chat, sharing stories and [...]

STREAM: The Soul of John Black - Live on KCRW's Morning Becomes Electric Former Fishbone guitarist and Miles Davis sideman John Bigham is back with his third CD under "The Soul of John Black" moniker. The new disc, Black John , was released earlier this year and here is a snippet from the Washington Post's review of the disc: Incantatory funk choruses abound, while "I Knew a Lady" gets a lift from a propulsive go-go beat, and mid-tempo workouts like "Better Babe" and [...]

Seamless blend of blues, R&B, funk and soul The third album from guitarist John Bigham (Fishbone, Miles Davis) continues to explore the intersection of blues, R&B, funk and soul. Having co-founded the group with bassist Chris Thomas for 2003's eponymous debut , he assumed the lion's share of artistic control on 2007's The Good Girl Blues , and here provides the songs, vocals, guitar and production. Blues and gospel provide the underlying progressions, but this is anything but "straight eight," with electric bass and piano guiding the music [...]

Contrary to popular belief, we at the Ripple love a good soul album. Just dig through my and Pope's CD and vinyl collections and you'll find your share of Issac Hayes , Curtis Mayfield , The Family Stand , Parliament , Bill Withers and Prince . Marvin , Sly and Stevie , it's all good. So why then, you might ask, haven't we been reviewing much soul on the Ripple? Well, that answer is simple. Regrettably, it seems that no other genre (with [...]

[ Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong turns 37 today, and you ought to be hearing new stuff from him on the radio soon, with the band's new album "21st Century Breakdown" coming in May ...] Charlie Wadhams had quite a warm-up for tonight's Hotel Cafe show. On Monday he was scheduled to do a short set at Fingerprints record store in Long Beach, but when the headliner was a no-show, the L.A. singer-songwriter and drummer Mike Green carried on for [...]

It's hard to come up with a much better story than John Bigham's resumé, but the veteran multi-instrumentalist - on his third album as the Soul of John Black - has conjured up a sensational narrative: It's the tale of a pawn-shop Stella guitar with special powers, the unknown Chicago bluesman who wielded it and the musician's tragic death in an alley at the hands of a mugger. From beyond the grave, the bluesman's songs are channeled through Black John, Bigham's alter ego. Sounds like good stuff, right? It's based on the 1976 blaxpoitation film "J.D.'s [...]
Sometimes I think a lot of alt-country types think they own the "roots music" idea. I know I'm guilty of this a lot, assuming that the natural and appropriate method of engaging with popular and folk music history lies somewhere on the continuum between Uncle Tupelo and BR549. But sometimes I get CDs that show me I'm an idiot. I got The Good Girl Blues by The Soul of John Black a couple months
