Jesper Skouboelling Who: D'Angelo What: Modern American soul singer born Michael Archer whose legend is as much based on his two released albums - 19952s Brown Sugar and 20002s Voodoo - as the now-mythical third, which has been rumoured and laboured over for the past 13 years and counting. Why: After many fits and starts, 2013 appears to be the year of D'Angelo's comeback. Album number three - James River - should be out this year [...]

IN THE NEWS Uproar Festival coming to Molson Amphitheatre Toronto fans of heavy metal and hard rock may have felt a little left out last year when the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival didn't make a stop in the city (in fact, it didn't make a single stop outside of the U.S.). This year, the tour will once again be [...]

It’s been a long haul for alt-rock veterans Garbage in the nearly 12 months since the release of their comeback album Not Your Kind of People . After abruptly announcing an infinite hiatus during the promotion for Bleed Like Me way back in 2005, the band have done their best to make up for lost time. They’ve toured the world over, including two stops in Toronto, which is where Shirley Manson, Butch Vig and company found themselves the night before Good Friday. [...]

Last night, Sound Academy hosted Diplo's Mad Decent dancehall collective Major Lazer playing to a sold out crowd of rabid fans in the latest episode of their 2013 Free the Universe world tour. The team absolutely blew the roof off with an explosive, unforgettable performance packed with new jams and timeless classics. For the uninitiated: " Major Lazer is a fictional cartoon character, who fought as a Jamaican commando and lost both arms in a secret zombie war in 1984. He fights vampires and various monsters, parties hard, [...]

An Interview with Graham Wright of Tokyo Police Club! Tokyo Police Club are proudly one of my favourite Canadian bands. Their music has the ability to consistantly make a listener want to shout lyrics and dance around. Keyboardist Graham Wright took the time to chat with me over the phone for a while about if TPC were a heavy metal band, Ten Songs, Ten Years, Ten Days their bromance with Hollerado and way more! So everybody, when you're standing near (read this interview with) Tokyo Police Club [...]
This Friday in Toronto, the one and only Alex Ridha, better known as Boys Noize , takes his LIVE show to Sound Academy in Toronto, and for anyone who's seen him before, you can be sure this will be nothing like it.. or at least we've been told. Standing atop his skull stage setup, Boys Noize pledges to reinvent his regular DJ set, with live re-edits and remixes of his classics and of course material off the new album "Out Of The Black". The first stop on the North American tour was this past weekend and anyone who was [...]

The kids are into Gaslight Anthem. It's a fact; they sell out Sound Academy and pack it with a mainly male audience dressed in black, sporting tattoos and their girlfriends in tow (also avec tattoos), and everyone hangs off of every emotive lyric. Gaslight have a good thing going. They play straight-up blue collar rock (and sure, the Boss influence is definitely there), but they offer their own take on the genre. No synths. No odd get-ups. No distracting light show. Just solid stage presence, an earnest, give-it-all lead [...]

It's not unheard of for a cartoon band to become a real band. The precedent has been set by groups like The Archies, Josie and The Pussycats, and a little band you may have heard of called Gorillaz. Dethklok fits nicely into that tradition while maintaining the proper level of brutality. Unlike Gorillaz though. Dethklok has the advantage of being a cartoon band who actually have their own cartoon, the often hilarious Metalocalypse . Led by Metalocalypse creator Brendon Small (also the brains behind Home Movies [...]

Nine o clock on a Saturday night in Toronto. The pier is quiet, and the Sound Academy is dark. The doors haven't opened yet. A few are already in line to get into the venue, but they're few and far between. It's in the dead of night when the busses and vans start to roll in. They're filled with diehard fans who have travelled for days (weeks?) on end, jumping from show to show in every city they can. There's soon a gathering in the parking lot of people in colourful clothes, dreadlocks, holding handmade signs and smearing face paint [...]

On Friday night, Toronto's own The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) commenced his four-night stretch of shows at the Sound Academy with a solid set of sexy songs. To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect. I've been a fan for a few years, and didn't have a chance to get to Hamilton for his show in March, but after reading a Ticketmaster user review , I had my doubts about his intentions as a performer. "[The show was] very misleading," the reviewer said. "It wasn't a concert at all. He [...]

Before beginning this mini Sonar Tour review, it's worth mentioning that: My camera's battery wasn't charged... Meaning I had to use my cellphone for pictures and video. I didn't see the whole show. Specifically, I missed out on half of Azari & III's show and didn't even get a chance to see Tiga (there is a curiousity about this though). There's also a few things I learned yesterday: Die Antwoord is a monster! Nobody, if Sonar taught us anything, should go on after them. [...]

Having been on a nostalgic kick lately, I decided to head to the Sound Academy on Monday night to see Alanis Morissette . The Ottawa borned, LA based singer was returning to Toronto after a four year absence to promote her new album Havoc and Bright Lights , which has already spawned a hit single Guardian . I know this because I heard it on the radio the one time I listened to the radio this year. You can't beat those odds. But let's face it, I (and a majority of the packed crowd) was [...]

Last September 17th, I saw one of the most spectacular and marvelous concerts. Two Door Cinema Club completely rocked Toronto along with loved openers Bombay Bicycle Club and The Lonely Forest. Seeing them again, I had an idea of how extremely superb my night would be. Last Friday, they played @ The Sound Academy in Toronto, and surely did not disappoint anyone in the audience. Prior to their show, we caught up with the band while they were at the driving range. Now this was quite the experience! We were able to talk to them [...]

Kitsuné Who: Two Door Cinema Club What: Belfast-based purveyors of guitar-driven dance-pop whom I once said would probably last a Summer and then fade into obscurity, and instead they've gotten pretty well massive and show no signs of going anywhere. Yeah, so. Why: Their second album Beacon was released at the start of Autumn and is giving them an excuse for a massive North American tour . When: Friday, October 5, 2012 Where: [...]
