The winner of the BBC sound of 2012 poll of music critics, broadcasters and bloggers has been announced as British soul musician Michael Kiwanuka. Compared to Bill Withers, Van Morrison and the Temptations, Kiwanuka's brand of retro soul, RnB & folk was inspired from a most unlikely discovery. A rare recording of Otis Redding's Sitting On The Dock of the Bay stuck to the front of a magazine tribute to Bob Dylan. "I love that sound," Kiwanuka told the BBC earlier today "The singers I listen to are quite old-school [...]

Dead Social Club. Dead Social Club are six-piece electronic indie band formed in South London in 2009. There's certainly a vaugue hint of a less doom laden Depeche Mode in the vocal delivery combined with a dash of 802s post punk, yet they manage to make it sound fresh and vital with big chourus's that stay on the right side of epic without ever sounding over blown. Their latest single "Stockholm" (below) is available as a pay what you like free download ( just [...]

Well the BBC have their list, the BAMS sort of have theirs and now we have ours: hot tips for bands to make it big in 2012, in this case as chosen by a selection of music bloggers designed to give a decent cross-section of opinions and some sort of reasonable alternative to the pap peddled on the Beeb. Now, to be entirely fair, although it is easy to make fun of the BBC's Sound of 2012 list ( here it is , so you can compare, contrast and make snide remarks on Twitter), it's not something I [...]

If London-based newcomers Dems do not show up on a few 'Sound of 2012' lists in January, then we'll be very surprised indeed. A warming blend of pop, dance and good old fashioned drums'n'guitar sensibility, Dems' debut single 'House' has elements of the softest moment of Foals - but with less of the furious severity with which Foals carry themselves and a whole lot more LOVELINESS. Other similarities between the two bands end there - apart from the mild beardyness of both. But please do not let this put you off, it has long [...]
