Harley's War: Harley Flanagan Signs with Southern Lord I'm both impressed and glad to see Harley back in action... Harley Flanagan, bassist/vocalist of Cro-Mags and Harley's War fame, has officially signed with Southern Lord for several upcoming releases! Southern Lord owner Greg Anderson released the following statement regarding this new alliance with Harley's newest endeavors: " Harley Flanagan is one of the most revered, controversial and infamous musicians of the last 25 years of underground music. His resume and reputation speak equal amounts of vitriolic decibels as does his bass stack blaring in your face. I have personally been a huge [...]

HARLEY'S LORD: GREG ANDERSON'S BRILLIANT AND ONLY SLIGHTLY RISKY POWER PLAY

In what is sure to reignite controversy in the hardcore scene, Southern Lord has apparently gone all-in by signing Cro-Mags' co-founder Harley Flanagan to the label for "several upcoming releases." Southern Lord signs Martyrdöd

Southern Lord has added Swedish crustpunks Martyrdöd to their roster and will be releasing their upcoming Studio Fredman-recorded album "Paranoia" this coming spring/summer.

Interview: Black Breath on misery, paranoia, and the pointlessness of life. And also their new album, Sentenced To Life.

Scion Rock Fest 2011: Black Breath Interview
Black Breath's full-length debut, Heavy Breathing , was one of those records that seemed to come out of nowhere, stamp its way into our consciousness through sheer force of awesome, and rightly claim its place as Thrash Hits' fourth favourite album of 2010 . Since then, we've seen Black Breath tear up dirty Soho basements on multiple occasions, and even triumph in the bright Summer sunshine of Sonisphere , and not once has our enthusiasm for the Seattle-based band's worship of Swedish-sounding death-metal faltered. When the news broke that the band's second full-length [...]

Sunday Slaylist: Poison Idea

Poison Idea - Marked for Life (live - 1983)
One of the major downsides of running a music blog is the continuous and never-ending pressure to find and celebrate new music. Don't get us wrong - there's a hellaload of great new stuff coming out damn near every day - but sometimes it just gets so goddamn exhausting . Sometimes you just want to throw your hands up and listen to music that the power and influence of which is already cemented in the firmament of rock'n'roll. Sometimes you just want to listen to music guaranteed to make you want to smash stuff up. This is [...]

Poison Idea - "Darby Crash Rides Again - The Early Years" CD Review (Southern Lord)

Poison Idea - "Darby Crash Rides Again - The Early Years" CD Review (Southern Lord) " We were going to write some self-righteous diatribe about the 'good old day' - but those days weren't good - we were pissed off then and we are pissed off now - go die. Positive = Boring " - from "Darby Crash Rides Again" 7" inner-sleeve Portland hardcore stalwarts Poison Idea are the beast that will never die. While guitarist "Pig Champion" died in 2006 and one-time drummer Steve "Thee Slayer Hippy" Hanford was arrested for a string of pharmacy robberies in 2008, the band continues to [...]

REMEMBER WHEN GREG ANDERSON FROM SUNN O)) AND SOUTHERN LORD WAS IN A REALLY BAD STRAIGHTEDGE BAND??

Amenity - follow
For those who don't know, the guy who co-founded SOUTHERN LORD was an sxe moshbro back in the '80s and early '90s, and had a terrible/lulzy hardcore band called BROTHERHOOD. Then after youth crew was cool, he was in ENGINE KID, a really shitty alternative rock band. After that he was in a drone band [...]

Wolves in the Throne Room - "Celestial Lineage" CD Review (Southern Lord) // NYC Shows on Sept. 12th & 14th

Wolves in the Throne Room - "Celestial Lineage" CD Review (Southern Lord) // NYC Shows on Sept. 12th & 14th On September 13, Wolves in the Throne Room are releasing Celestial Lineage (Southern Lord), which finishes the trilogy that began with Two Hunters (2007). This new disc is more organic (and perhaps less malevolent) than Black Cascade and, while these seven tracks are a noticeable step toward a more open sound, the disc incorporates all of the elements from the band's past. Immediately noticeable is the return of angelic vocalist Jessika Kenney (who added vocals to Two Hunters (2007) and "Malevolent Grain" (2009)) whose voice starts off the first track "Thuja Magus [...]

Wolves In the Throne Room- "Woodland Cathedral"

Wolves in the Throne Room - Woodland Cathedral
On September 13th, black metal experimentalists Wolves In the Throne room will be dropping a new album via Southern Lord: Celestial Lineage . And to be honest, I wasn't sure if I was gonna be looking to this one. I wasn't a fan of the band's output since 20082s Two Hunters , and it's mostly because the band had drained its sound of the atmospheric textures that made it so interesting in the first place. What makes the situation funniest is WITTR seemed to be jumping off the atmospheric black metal wagon as loads of unknown bands were [...]
