On September 17th 1976 NASA showed off America's first Space Shuttle the Enterprise, in Palmdale CA. Apparently, Captain Kirk was too cool to attend? Somewhat Related: First two seasons of Star Trek played simultaneously

What It Looks Like Inside the Space Shuttle Discovery

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =vFwqZ4qAUkE I've seen some of this footage before but never heard the commentary. The narrators go into some really interesting detail on the tech involved in capturing the film footage of Shuttle launches. Most of the footage is for review purposes but some is purely documentary. All of the footage is beautiful though. It amazed me that they still used film all the way up until the end of the Shuttle program. They're also shooting at higher frame rates so you get some great slow motion in there. The lenses used [...]

CollectSpace gives us one last look at the now defunct Shuttle Atlantis. Incredible detail in these interiors, I can't even imagine the level of engineering and testing that went into even the smallest components on this spacecraft. More images here . The Invisible Enigma - Austere Guinevere (Lady Killer) Str8 Buttah presents the 3rd Single off Desultory - Austere Guinevere- as the 'Half Alien, Half Nigerian' transports himself mentally through Teckzilla's space shuttle beyond the exosphere giving a short narrative on the turbulent ways and difficulty in trying to stay in survival mode whilst being a larger than life emcee...challenging the system, while showing doubt in his theories immediately... Dropping sub-atomic subliminal contradicting lines that create this complex classic that truly defines the art n science behind Desultory...and like [...]

Is it safe to aspire to the motivation of a populace not via the very means of its own control but through a noble truth , a calling to something outside the macro economic dance that has assumed legitimacy over visionary discourse? Where once we were consciously motivated in our national labours by a tangible fear of the 'other', now we aspire to be frictionless in the machinery of capital; to never upset the brutal evolutionary drive of the markets with their imperfect gods at the wheel. While that is obviously slightly more preferable to the scorched [...]

I've seen a lot of beautiful, moving images of the Shuttle lately but none have felt so intimate as these by Justin Ray for Spaceflight Now . Something about these photos of the now decommissioned spacecraft, engines removed, mission complete, bring the idea of it to life like none I've seen thus far. It's the textures and details that highlight what an incredible machine this was and what a profound achievement for humankind it represents. And look at that lettering! I've never seen it so close; it has such a handmade feel to it at [...]

nasa.gov: "This feature-length documentary looks at the history of the most complex machine ever built. For 30 years, NASA's space shuttle carried humans to and from space, launched amazing observatories, and eventually constructed the next stop on the road to space exploration." - via www.openculture.com

Download : Gil Scott-Heron - Space Shuttle (Leftside Wobble Edit) Leftside Wobble : It was great to witness the outpouring of love and respect for Gil Scott-Heron over the weekend. A true innovator and inspiration to so many, I wanted something to play out over the weekend and came across this forgotten classic whilst digging through the collection. Even though it has very little to do with Gil Scott-Herons usual production style being [...]

When Kennedy announced his intention to send a man to the moon, it did more than just spur science to innovate quickly. It sparked the imagination of millions and continued to do so over generations. Conversely the final space shuttle launch this year took more than just budgets and science from NASA. Here's a story about something else that burned out along with Discovery's final blast-off. A long time ago, back in grade school, my best friend was a kid named Jake. [...]

Space Shuttle Discovery touched down at Kennedy Space Center after it concluded 39th and final mission. The 27-year career of the Discovery shuttle came to a dignified end on Wednesday after Commander Steve Lindsey came in for a landing. Touchdown went off without a hitch and marked the beginning of the end for NASA’s shuttle program . Discovery’s return came at the end of a two-week mission at the International Space Station . Currently NASA is schedule for two [...]
Outer space - not particularly "metal", is it? The things about space that are pretty metal - aliens, big freaky robots, whatever it is Bruce Dickinson is singing about on the latest Iron Maiden album - aren't really what space is about. Space is really about science, satellites, and very, very slow spacewalks. But if [...]
