Little Berlin welcomes you to explore the interstellar musical limits tonight with a bill that includes a pair of hometown heavyweights Spacin' and Chris Forsyth. Fronted by Birds of Maya bassist Jason Killinger, Spacin' offers a funk-infused sonic explosion that launches off a classic blues rock platform incorporating powerfully raw and raunchy fuzzed-out guitar licks while utilizing a tight rhythm section (which is held down by Killinger's wife Eva on the kit and Acid Kicks' Sean Hamilton on bass), allowing the group to stretch [...]

Photo by PSquared Photography Jason Killinger's psychedelic garage rock band Spacin' performed on April 4th at Brooklyn's 285 Kent with their pals Purling Hiss (led by Mike Polizze). NYC Taper has both sets that you can download for free. Download the Spacin' set here and the set from Purling Hiss here . Below, stream a cover of the MC52s "American Ruse" by Spacin,' and "Don't Even Try It" by Purling Hiss.
[uncredited photo from last.fm - will credit if info provided] The band Spacin' began as the solo project of Jason Killinger, who was also a member of Birds of Maya . Philadelphia has produced a plethora of superb gargage-influenced music over the last several years and Killinger's contribution is no less impressive than others such as Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs, and Purling Hiss. In fact, Killinger teamed with Purling Hiss' Mike Polizze in Birds of Maya, and their solo bands just completed a tour together. On Thursday last, we caught [...]

Good mornin' - yes, it's time for a wake 'n' bake to get you in the right mood today for Spacin' , who will be providing some far-out, funky psych grooves for breakfast with a live version of "Oh Man"! The footage was recorded on February 23, 2013 at Johnny Brenda's. Special thanks to videographer Joe Burns for sharing.
Local rockers Purling Hiss celebrate the release of Water On Mars at Johnny Brenda's tonight. The new LP is the trio's major label debut (through Drag City) and presents the bristly lo-fi guitar rock of previous releases in a more polished, hi-fi resolution while retaining the amped up excess of feedback and noise. The Key ... Continue reading

Philadelphia visual artist Anthony Campuzano (a 2009 Pew Fellow) will celebrate the release of his book Stars: Even The Sun With All Its Warmth Is Detatched at Temple Contemporary (Tyler School of Art) on Saturday, February 2nd with performances by Steve Gunn and the Paul Sukeena Band. Gunn is a Philadelphia native currently based in Brooklyn who ... Continue reading
Desaparecidos - Read Music, Speak Spanish (2002) How we managed to get through the Occupy Movement, not to mention all of the continued distrust and anger aimed at Corporate America, without a single album to define the moment escapes me. Maybe escapes me isn't the best choice of phrase. Bother is better. Yes, it bothers me. We have plenty of indie and mainstream musicians in the Seinfeld tradition who sing about nothing. What we don't have is a new voice. There are the veteran voices, like Bruce Springsteen and the not as veteran voices, like Ted [...]
Philadelphia's Spacin' received a glowing review for their 2012 debut Deep Thuds LP from the folks over at The Guardian last month. With name-checks left and right of some of the most exciting local rock bands right now (Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs, Birds of Maya, Purling Hiss), The Guardian calls the new Spacin' ... Not to be confused Gregor’s official list here and here . 2012 was an outstanding year for new music. Here’s the stuff I listened to the most: 15. Divine Fits – A Thing Called Divine Fits 14. Clinic [...]
The bill for Johnny Brenda's February 23rd show is a deep one, with three local mind-melting acts taking the stage to quite literally blow us away. First up we've got Spacin', a new jammy fuzz-rock band in the vein of a marginally restrained Birds of Maya (which makes sense since it's the project of Birds' ... Continue reading
Shouts to The Deli for alerting us to this fun new video from Spacin'. If you're not familiar, the fuzzy garage-rock thrashers (which include Mike Polizze of Purling Hiss) dropped an excellent LP, Deep Thuds, on Richie Records earlier this year. This knockabout anthem "Sunshine, No Shoes" comes from it, and in this video, we ... Continue reading

Goods news for Spacin' fans today, which also means for us too! Check out some hot moves and sweet air guitar by "Harmonica" Dan Balcer in the band's new music video for the party time anthem "Sunshine, No Shoes" from their most excellent Deep Thuds . The footage was filmed at Philadelphia Record Exchange. BONUS: Testostertunes just shared another groovy instrumental track from the album called "Oh, Man," which you can also take a listen to below if you haven't already been cranking it for months now.

So I still don't know why Kung Fu Necktie doesn't post anything on their site or calendar about the Phonographic Arts shows happening on their second floor and why the Phono Arts dudes don't make it easier for me to find deets about their show, but there is a good one happening tonight with Far-Out Fangtooth and Spacin' opening for Dan Melchior. BTW: Have you checked out Fangtooth's EP for HoZac Records The Thorns ? The release is a good one that definitely deserves a revisit with its hypnotic tribal beats and explosive guitars. You [...]

Makeshift shows pop up all the time in Philly so it shouldn't be a surprise that festivals do as well. This Sunday Sweet Jane Vintage and Lucky 13 are teaming up to bring us the South Philly Fall Festival, and it'll be a beautiful fall day to do so. There will be merchandise and food vendors along with local garage/psych bands like Spacin' , Residuels , Joe Kusy & The Rot Through Boys , Arctic Splash and more to keep things scuzzy and dirty in the South Philly streets. Take advantage of the good times [...]

One of our serious Deli faves Spacin' is performing a free show tonight at the Institute of Contemporary Art for their FREE FOR ALL series. However, the usually four-piece made up of Jason Killinger ( Birds of Maya ), Sean Hamilton ( Acid Kicks ), Paul Sukeena (ex- Spooks ), and Eva Killinger has expanded to a nine-piece referred to as the Spacin' Arkestra. No word exactly about who else will be joining them, except Light Heat 's Quentin Stoltfus on "noisy guitar," but given Jason's ties in the Philly indie music scene and his love [...]

Spacin' have never lacked for creativity in seasoning their music with the kinds of jangly, fuzzed-out experimental sounds that have been common to Philadelphia since the days of Azusa Plane . Their psychedelia-infused jams are always a great starting point for what's going on in Philly's space-garage-lo-fi scene at any given moment. The band's steadfastness earned their debut Deep Thuds our June Album of the Month spot. Where Spacin' veers off into cosmic, abstract ruminations, The Residuels are there tonight to bring it back into more concrete territory. Their tunes are straight-up garage-blues rock [...]

With 2012 over halfway over, this seems like as good a time as any to start getting things together for the inevitable “year end” list. So let’s keep it simple: Here are ten awesome and overlooked trashy, garage rocky, power poppy, grungy, grimy, slimy, noisy releases that I haven’t already talked about in this column this year. 1) Spacin’ - Deep Thuds [Richie/TestosterTunes] Over in Philadelphia, critical attention has rightfully been focused on Kurt Vile and The War on [...]
![FUCK YEAH: Spacin' - Empty Mind [MP3]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4330498_lg.jpg)
MP3: Spacin' - Empty Mind I finally got an opportunity to hear Deep Thuds , the way killer debut by Spacin '. Why are they worth checking out? There's a dude from Birds of Maya in the band, the album has a nice warm/rusty sound to it and has a goddamn rock and roll heart! The album, out on Richie , is sold out though. So uh, try google!
