As a frequently bearded gent I'm often impressed by the lengths real beardy types will go to, to stand out from the crowd:

Comics and graphic novels are, by definition, very cinematic forms of art. Where the pacing of novels can ramble on and on when translated to the screen (leading to a lot of beautifully shot walking ), comics tell a story in much the same way that a film does. Adapted correctly, a movie based on a comic can be wildly popular, critically acclaimed, and merchandising mother lodes - examples: the Nolan trilogy, Marvel's Avengers. But if anyone knows how to take a thing that works and twist it into an unrecognizable, derivative, simplified lump of marketing, it's [...]
Today, we're getting over our Comic Con hangover with this special edition of Five at 5. Check it. 1. The Ramones - 'Spiderman Theme' Everyone loves Spiderman, ever since he was given birth to by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee in the early 1960s. The comic was turned into an animated television series which featured an insanely popular theme song. This theme song was covered by The Ramones on this album , where a bunch of artists covered their favourite theme songs. Great album, great cover, and great video. Check [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive Getty The Red Hot Chili Peppers have always seemed somewhat juvenile, what with their topless torsos and sock-clad, er, chili peppers. But when we say "always," we mean it -- the iconic alt band has been around since 1983. So it shouldn't be a huge surprise that lead singer Anthony Kiedis is turning 50 today, but it still kinda is. Fifty is pretty [...]

Watch: The Amazing Spider-Man

Type Spider-Cow into Google images and a plethora of spider-man cows will grace your screen. When did this start happening? Why cows? Are there lots of other spider-man costume inspired animals out there all waiting to be gazed upon? This one is £489 +VAT if you like what you see.

Amazing Spider-Man #700 will be released in December and features a collage art cover by a French artist Mr. Garcin . Editor Steve Wacker Wacker describes how the cover came to be: “What happened was sort of a weird thing,” said Wacker. “I was on the train in the morning checking out other comic sites and someone had posted this collage of cool Spidey art. I saw it, and I loved it, finally got to my office and like 75 people had emailed me asking if I’d seen this.” [...]

If you made it to your local cineplex this summer, odds are you probably saw one (or if your like me, all), of the following big budget super hero movies - The Avengers, Batman: The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spiderman. With that in mind I thought we'd dedicate this week's Mix Tape to all those DC and Marvel comic book heroes that we grew up with, and that I spent much of my allowance on each week. So sit back, enjoy and play it loud!!! We kick things off with [...]

If you don't know about Mark Millar's run on Marvel Knights Spider-Man, you should. It's greatly underrated. Much of Marvel Knights wasn't all that great, but there were spots were it was fantastic, and this is one of those shining moments. In this storyline, Millar not only writes about Spidey's first sidekick (which is the "big thing" that Dan Slott will soon be adding to Amazing Spider-Man), but he also writes about a Secret Skrull Invasion (kind of). Great stuff-you should check it out. Here's Spidey and his sidekick, Ethan Edwards, in costume:

So, we’ve talked about what’s going on with DC and what's new with everyone else who isn’t Marvel . Now, on to the main event. But first: An editorial. I know Marvel scored big with its movie announcements, promises of Winter Soldier, Falcon, and more Thanos (and, remarkably, still no talk of Avengers 2). But on the comic book front, their panels were underwhelming and underinformative. And why, with all these movies, do they never mention comic books? Why is there no kid-holding-a-comic in a Marvel movie? Why [...]

Soundtracks to comic book movies used to kick ass. The right combination of original songs, inspired covers, and curated classics can breathe life into otherwise blatantly commercial popcorn flicks. What separates comics from real life is tone –- color, texture, and feel - and bringing pen-and-ink creations into the realm of live action can be a tough sell. But the right tunes can pull ink right off the page, channeling the spirit of the hand-drawn art that was so cool in the first place - color and shadow painted with guitar and backbeat. The best soundtracks are legitimately [...]

Thoughts on Films Movie Review by Max Bowen Been there, done that. That’s the first thing I thought as the credits rolled on The Amazing Spider-Man, directed by Marc Webb….wait, what? His name’s Marc Webb?... Ugh, let’s just move on. I’d love to give this film a glowing review. I [...]

By the time I write this article, it may already be out of date. But I’m not a reporter. I’m a re-reporter, gossip monger, and opinionator. About comic books. And this here column is what I think about the planned Marvel not-reboot/not-relaunch/wave of new #1s coming in October through February. Marvel never follows DC. Except when they do. Both Avengers and X-Men will shake up significantly after the Avengers vs X-Men event...But calling it a reboot isn’t really accuate. It’s more like a bunch of #1 issues in current continuity. They’re moving [...]

By now, all of you who care at all about Batman have read #10, in which the “big reveal” of the Court of Owls storyline, which has been going on for ten months now, is that the main villain is Bruce Wayne’s brother. And if you’re saying this is contrived or silly, I point you to this article-a fantastic, detailed look at how the seeds of Willowood were planted years and years ago by none other than Grant Morrison . I have to say, I found the denouement here better than what I expected: I thought the [...]

How do you do a Spider-Man movie where Uncle Ben never says "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility?" That's, like, the whole character right there. Plus: Tons of plot threads that never went anywhere and ridiculousness: The hunt for the burglar plotline is dropped, as is the bloody handprint (and why was his hand bloody in the first place?); how is it a boy genius never googled his dad before?; why are there lizards in the sewers of NY...and why didn't Spidey stink to high heaven when he left the sewers, anyway?; and how is it [...]
