These mixes were posted in January and February 2010, the winter of our discontent. Seriously, the blog was on life support during this time. We're through that storm now. 2010 was such a great year for music, and these early mixes show why. Many of the tracks were available in late 2009, but appeared on 2010 releases. Tracks are from late October through late November 2009 Gapless mix ripped at 256k VBR. Download all tracks in one zip file [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Pavement 's final U.S. show and almost-final gig of their reunion -- they play a festival in Buenos Aires on November 19 -- wasn't a big hit with Twitter critics. " There seem to be a few people in this room happy this is the last show of the Pavement tour," tweeted Stereogum's Amrit Singh during the band's Matador [...]
I'd be interested in looking at a Venn diagram between The Long Winters fans and Spiral Stairs fans. Discordant, perhaps, but the two singers - John Roderick of The Long Winters and Scott Kannberg of Pavement and Preston School of Industry - found mutual adoration amidst the hazy fog of Seattle. The two became friends and got together with Mt. Fuji Records and voila! We get a double A-Side 73. The Long Winters offers us a new song, "Connections In Nashville", and Spiral Stairs contributes "Dreams They Guide Us". Both A-Sides are pressed on [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Canada Jordi Vidal, Redferns / Getty Images "We're Pavement , welcome. It's 1996 all over again," announced Stephen Malkmus to Montreal's Osheaga Festival crowd. It was a fitting introduction for the reunited indie rock legends, whose set constantly veered between nostalgia and self-conscious irony. It was a set loaded with hits (if Pavement tracks can properly be categorized as "hits"), but [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News "I got in the elevator with Mark E. Smith , Colin from Wire and two members of Mission of Burma ," said Pavement 's Scott " Spiral Stair s" Kannberg, as the band kicked off their opening night headline set at Primavera Sound 2010. "It was a punk rock wet dream." Stephen Malkmus explained by way of reply, "That's just another day at the office for Primavera Sound." The festival in Barcelona, [...]
As if touring the crap out of the Western world this year wasn't enough, not to mention booking a veritable indie rock dream show , Pavement has decided to make its reunion even more special by venturing somewhere the influential band has never before played - its own backyard. That's right, as reported by Recordnet.com , for the first time ever, Steven Malkmus, Scott Kannberg (who both graduated from neighboring Lodi's Tokay High School), and the rest of the band (all are from the East Coast) will play in their hometown of Stockton, California. [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Pavement performed their first show on U.S. soil in more than a decade on Sunday with a highly anticipated set on the main stage at Coachella . Still, within earshot, Phoenix simultaneously played the smaller Outdoor Theatre to a crowd that was more than double in size. No matter. Keeping casual about the whole affair from the get-go, they strolled leisurely on stage and commented simply "It's been a long time," in a way that was more matter-of-fact than [...]

Malkmus and Spiral Stairs had a nice heart to heart w/ the Doctor over at the Triple J . Congrats to Spiral on his pending nuptials! Tweet This Post

Pavement brings back their classic gold soundz!

We're only a few days away from Pavement's first reunion show - in Auckland, NZ - and things are firing up. As we last saw the boys , Colin Meloy (of The Decemberists) gave us photographic evidence that this is actually happening, and now there's more... this time from Spiral Stairs ! He writes via his online blog : we are about to embark on our very ambitious world tour in a couple days. march 1 is the first date and it's in a place very special to our hearts... new [...]

Broken Social Scene are back together, and ready to blow your mind with an all star lineup. We would expect nothing less.
It's a joyful week in the land of indie rock: Canada's favorite sons (and daughter) Broken Social Scene are back with their first new album in half a decade! The as yet untitled full-length is set to come out May 4. Now, Broken Social Scene has always been a loose collective. There are the six core members (you may also know Kevin Drew and Brandon Canning by the solo albums they've released in the years since BSS' self-titled 2005 record). But there are also a slew [...]

Filed under: New Music , Canada Broken Social Scene 's rabidly anticipated new album may not have a title yet, but it's finally got a release date: May 4, 2010. It's been almost five years since their self-titled third album and in the intervening years many members of the Toronto collective have gone on to great success with solo efforts and assorted outside projects while Broken Social Scene's breakthrough album 'You Forgot It In People' was remembered on many a decade-end list. But [...]
Since 1999, the Juno Award-winning Canadian indie band Broken Social Scene has illustrated several awesome characteristics - they make damn good music, they're damn good live, and original members often go on to equally awesome solo projects only to return at a moment's notice for the recording of a new studio album or a once-in-a-life-time, you'll-remember-this-forever concert . As Broken Social Scene gears up for the release of its yet-to-be-titled fourth studio album, the aforementioned characteristics will once again be on display. For one, the long overdue followup to 2005's Broken Social Scene [...]

While some of the choices may come as a surprise to those who regularly follow AtomicNed.com, the variety of favorites shouldn't be shocking. While I certainly have been much more of a trendfollower than a trendsetter over the course of my music listening history, it comes down to liking what I like and not always liking what the masses of respected music writers/bloggers like. I mean, how many other writers do you think have both Slayer and Taylor Swift on their year-end favorites list? 1. Danger Danger [...]

Last October, Pavement guitarist Spiral Stairs revealed to us that in addition to a slew of forthcoming tour dates, his recently reunited band would also be "doing a best of compilation." Well, the man lived up to his words. On May 9th, Pavement will offer Quarantine The Past: The Best Of Pavement , a remastered 23-track collection that will be available on mid-priced LP, CD, and digitial formats. According to the band's label, Matador Records , "the tracks span the entirety of Pavement's career from 1989 to 1999, from the scratchy and [...]
Welcome to the annual "Top Albums of the Year" list. As I expected, 2009 was an amazing year for music. Putting together this list was much harder than I anticipated. There were so many quality albums that did not make the cut and I'm sure I'll kick myself two months from now for leaving something [...]
