Spiritualized are a band that exist on the edge. There’s a fascinating compulsion to the music: the chance that, at any second, they could fall off — into endless droning noise, or eternal gospel harmony; into dead-eyed drug overdose, or blissful ego death. I never quite know what to say about Spiritualized . Jason Pierce (or J Spaceman), frontman of the band, has expertly sculpted out a niche for the band as the neo-psychedelic space-rockers obsessed with heartbreak and painkillers. It's become a cult of sorts. Consider "Sweet Heart Sweet Light" a perpetuation of that phenomenon. It's heavy and smooth, dense and perfectly produced. There's no doubting Jason Pierce has had a right old time of it since opting to run with the empowering Spiritualized moniker now over two decades ago. A frequent inhabitant of hallucinatory environs and a self-professed "waster" for much of the past twenty-odd years, his hedonistic tendencies caught up with him back in 2006 when on September 11th, having played an emotive set backing fellow visionary Patti Smith at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall, he suffered a quite unnatural disaster all of his own. The long-awaited new Spiritualized album Sweet Heart Sweet Light comes out on Fat Possum Records 16 April 2012. "Hey Jane" is the first single and video from that album, and it's probably bound to cause a might of controversy for it's bold story line. But it's so worth it, after all.

I have to hand it to my friend Terry, who served as the post supervisor on this new video for Spiritualized’s “Hey Jane”. This is one of my favorite videos of the year so far, and with such an epic and lengthy song, it was probably a difficult task to make something so cinematic and engaging that also didn’t overshadow the song. Historically, Spiritualized has had two primary modes of conduct: the trademarked, baptismal epics – for example, the born-again sprawl of “Wont Get to Heaven (The State I’m In)” – and the ribald, rebellious rockers, which are also epic but toward an altogether different end, that is, J. Spaceman et al actively collapsing into themselves, everyone entrenched not in holy water, but in their own terrestrial perspiration.
