Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Hi-Hat Recordings That Spookey Ruben was the weirdest guy at the Bovine Sex Club is saying a lot. The Bovine is a Toronto rock bar where dudes in leather jackets belt out "Shout at the Devil" during rock 'n' roll karaoke nights and large ladies in stilettos lead around dudes in bondage gear on leashes. During Wednesday night's (June 15) NXNE [...]

Back in 1995, Rubens' quirky self-produced debut, 'Modes of Transportation Vol.1,' and low-budget video for the single 'These Days Are Old' had critics raving. The hype landed the musician a deal with a big time American record label, but soon faded, never [...]

I'm not even sure where to start with this one. This video of Spookey Ruben's Dizzy Playground sees the veteran Toronto musician in the role of Spaghetti Cowboy, a man charged with apprehending the nasty El Bandido, portrayed by a mustachioed Leslie Feist. That's Toronto radio stalwart Alan Cross narrating. Just don't think about it too hard and enjoy: AUX.TV's website
The Horseshoe was near-empty when we arrived around 8pm. A screen on the side of the stage was showing a quirky music video seemingly unrelated to the events coming up but was successful at getting people out of their chairs and onto the floor. 9pm rolled around and the first act, Spookey Ruben, took the stage. Spookey Ruben was ... not so spooky. He supposedly got his name during his teenage metalhead days but those days are evidently long gone. Spookey Ruben was nothing short of adorable. His buttery-smooth, sometimes-falsetto voice sang indie pop tunes of humour, unrequited [...]
Spookey Ruben has been around the Southern Ontario indie scene for quite some time. In fact I first recall seeing him open for The Flaming Lips at the Opera House in Toronto in 1995. Well good old Spookey is back with a brand new album, Mechanical Royalty. The new album is a melange of maligned retro musical styles. It's difficult to tell sometimes whether Ruben means them to be a tribute or

In 2007 I saw Songs From A Room three times from August to December . The fact that I had only planned on seeing them one of those times is a testament to what a hard working band they are, as well as the caliber of bands that they have had the privilege of sharing the stage with. Their first EP was a throat shredding, mind numbing display of post punk with a leaning towards the hardcore. Yesterday, the band released their latest EP for digital download on iTunes and Dine Alone [...]
Reading some of the other reviews, I can see that while my schedule was quite busy, I didn't catch nearly as many bands as some of the other bloggers out there did. My Saturday still seemed incredibly busy though, since I did actually attend a wedding earlier in the day. (There was no reception if you were wondering.) Therefore my evening was still filled with musical wonderfulness. For the most part. We headed on down to Yonge and Dundas square to catch the fun filled pop stylings of Spookey Ruben, who was [...]
