Birthdays is a one man show. I saw him perform recently at Chez Andre , a new venue in the basement of the East Village's Standard Hotel. Some of his recorded stuff comes across sounding like unreleased Animal Collective tracks, but he pulls it off well, and the live show is great. bandcamp

A lost set by the late DJ Mehdi , recorded at Stones Throw vs. Ed Banger on March 6, 2009 at Le Bataclan in Paris, has been posted on Soundcloud. Born Mehdi Favéris-Essadi, DJ Mehdi, who accidentally fell from the roof of his Paris home and died on September 13, 2011, earned a global reputation by producing killer club tracks and collaborating with the likes of Daft Punk, Cassius, MC Solaar and Chromeo. Die Geschichte will es so: die leider viel zu kurze Karriere von The Standard , die inzwischen auch schon wieder Vergangenheit ist, sollte 2008 jäh abbrechen. Was mögen nur die Gründe dafür gewesen sein? Vielleicht war es ja diese Theatralik, die sie zu sehr in die Nähe zu The National rückte? Doch allein für dieses "Hotel" - ein Lied, das The National so nie komponiert haben - wünsche ich mir grad, sie würden jeden Monat wieder etwas veröffentlichten. Und sei es nur für mich.
