By Russell Warfield You're probably tired of reading that it's been A Bad Year for festivals, but Standon Calling have had a uniquely rocky twelve months. As bad as it might be to undersell your tickets by a significant margin a la Reading or Leeds, it's almost unarguably worse to have to firefight the public discovery that the festival's director had been funding his project through hundreds of thousands of pounds of embezzled money; an act which has wound him up in jail. It's to Standon Calling's eternal testament, then, [...]

I almost tire of writing this, because I seem to involuntarily plaster the sentiment everywhere, but: I love Standon Calling . I remain unduly astounded that the place has a fucking swimming pool and hosts a festival-wide fancy dress party of the sort where you feel stupid if you're not wearing a ridiculously outlandish costume. It almost doesn't need bands, but check out some of these beauties which they done booked all the same: Spiritualized It's been a pretty long [...]

After a little worrying bout of rain, the sun is out again (in the North of England at least), so inevitably our thoughts return to festival season. Here, we look at some more of our favourites. If you missed Parts 1 and 2 of our bumper preview bonanza, they are here and here respectively. Don't forget to keep up to speed with our Vodafone VIP coverage too! Green Man [...]

Feeling slightly weary by the third and final day of the festival, I crawled out of my stuffy tent and into the Crooked House tent to hear the rising stars of folk rock, Vardo And The Boss. Bringing out the best of the weekend's sunshine, they pulled quite the crowd. They rubbed the sleep away from the tired eyes of festivalgoers and replaced it with stars as the lead vocalist and guitarist, Laura Jane, sung with incredible versatility. Combined with Lauren Francis' impressive accompanying vocals and piano, they filled the stage with vivacity. The band shared great chemistry, showing real... [...]

Praying that the weather man was wrong about the rain, my friend and I set off on Friday evening to Standon Calling Festival in Bishop Stortford with bags stuffed to the brim with batteries, disposable barbeques and excitement that could last someone a life time. Being a first time festivalgoer who had little knowledge of the artists featuring on the line-up, I was a little apprehensive. But after reading about the history of the festival, I was chomping at the bit! More than half of last year's Mercury Awards nominees have played Standon such as Florence and the Machine, Friendly [...]

The Violet May "Electric and inspiring... their time is now." - The Guardian "Gargantuan stage presence and thunderous guitars... Familiarise yourself with these mugshots, for you will definitely be seeing a lot more of them this year. An electrifying live show" - Clash Yep, exciting news from Oh! Whilst standing in a wet field in Hertfordshire on Sunday afternoon my feet started to tap, my head started to nod and then i was suddenly, uncontrollably, smiling and dancing like a tit with about 50 other people, all of us with inane grins on our faces. It was incredible, i began to wonder, how, after a full weekends excess at Standon were we here, dancing, on a sunday afternoon and not feeling like death sat down somewhere nursing our broken heads, it was a fleeting thought, as Stuart Price once sang "music makes you lose control", and it certainly [...]
New Music | Citadels SMASH. A definite highlight of Standon Calling last weekend, Citadels released this puppy unto the iTunes world the other day. Now I know we don't normally do this but, well, get over it. Here's a sweet remix for you, now go buy the mp3 . Please. Thanks.
One of your new favourite bands, who'll make your summer? Probably. That is unless you don't have a ear for a damn good tune and want to hear the best summer song of 2009 that will have you dancing your tiny little tits off too in the park going "oooo eeeee oooo, oooo eeee ooo"! Thanks to Neon Gold for the tip back in January on their hot tips for 2009 , We Are Not A Rock Band can bring you 2:57 that will make you [...]
New Music | Mothlite Not being of the most stable disposition, I would usually steer clear of music that places me on the edge of a panic attack but Mothlite's music is so immediately arresting and beautiful that it's well worth the risk. In fact, I would go as far as to say that I'd happily have the panic attack, figuratively curled up under the bracken on a damp forest floor, only to emerge a stronger and more attuned individual, probably some kind of druid. Just saying. Comprised of Daniel O'Sullivan (multi-instrument [...]
New Music | My Toys Like Me Count yourselves lucky. This could've been a drab post about Jonathan Boulet or Bowerbirds. But oh no we've come through strong, heads buried deeply in the electro sand and Friday is Superpowers remix day. Our festival guide will be fully kicking off very soon and these guys will be heading up the Standon Calling offensive so stay interested. In the meantime have a peak at their intro on videos .

illustration by (the extremely talented) Raul Allen It may not have been obvious for the past month or so, but Letters Have no Arms actually has two contributors. Yes, REALLY! The other 50% of LHNA (yours truly) was away on holiday somewhere in Transylvannia, after having returned from another biiiiiig holiday that...well nevermind. The point is: said 50% of the blog has listened to some great music, seen some cool bands, read some nice books and watched a bunch of [...]
