![[Listen] Candy Claws: "Do You Ever Feel That Way" (Starflyer 59 Cover)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3965591_lg.jpg)
It was another great year in music. Again, like last year, I can't understand those who insists that 'nothing good happened in 20102, annoying hipsters. It was such a diverse year, full of brilliant gems. I won't go into charts and numbering, but here's a rough overview of the stuff I liked this year. Some of the [...]

After going out Christmas shopping this past weekend, I'm in the Christmas spirit about as much as can be expected; for me, it's not particularly much. (My girlfriend would undoubtedly tell you that I'm kind of a Grinch.) But I do like decorating and listening to A Charlie Brown Christmas like my family did when...
More Christmas songs, yippee! Local meteorologists are predicting at least a few inches of snow to fall overnight so I've (tentatively) made plans to take my girls sledding it the weather cooperates. Until then, we'll just listen to some Christmas music. There's more, so here are the links to Day 1 and Day 2 , Day 3 of the series. MP3: Slaraffenland - Little Drummer Boy The Swimmers - The Christmas Sound The Dismemberment Plan - This Christmas [...]
Husband&Wife have a new album out, called Proud Flesh , and it's quite easily their strongest album yet. Husband&Wife began planning Proud Flesh several years ago, while they were working on Dark Dark Woods . Wanting to release a downbeat rock album first, they recorded Dark Dark Woods , and kept the upbeat songs for their follow-up. As a result, these songs are seasoned and well thought out. Last night Husband&Wife celebrated their [...]

For a small, intensely devoted few, Tooth & Nail Records was in the 90s a sacred entity on par with Dischord, Epitaph, Sub Pop and the like. The label, in these cases, was something to behold in and of itself, educating its sycophants on emerging underground genres while the artists themselves, though indispensable, were players in the broader aesthetic story. Somewhat ironically, though, the affect these players have on our lives often outlives that of the label itself. This is the case with California's Starflyer 59 , often the one-man show of Jason Martin, whose covered everything from shoegaze, [...]

On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, five golden rings... and a whole bunch of Christmas MP3's. Are you overwhelmed yet? I sure am. I love love love The Firebird Band's "Gift" and even though it really isn't a Christmas song (i.e. not on a Christmas specific album) I've still included it here. It's my comp3ilation so I can do what I want, including making up words that combine letters and numbers. Bah humbug! MP3: Brand New - O Holy Night [...]
Back when it was first conceived, Tooth & Nail was my musical savior. They were a little more punk oriented as I got older, but the fact that I could purchase their wares at my local Christian themed bookstore made them acceptable in my parents' house. And while a lot ...

Candy Claws Genre : Experimental // Newgaze From: Fort Collins, Colorado United States Colorado's foremost practitioners of psychtronica Candy Claws have taken some time out from perfecting their whisper quiet electro pop to and promoting their current album 'In The Dream Of The Sea Of Life' to provide a unique insight into what makes them tick. In the musical equivalent of expensive psycho analysis, the Devil's interview the [...]

Image From Here If you have been reading MNG for awhile now, you will definitely know that I like lists. I am trained as an Electrical Engineer and was one for 18 years. I like order instead of chaos and things to be listed a certain way. It may be the fact of my formal Engineering training or more of the fact that I am somewhat an obsessive compulsive person. I have done many posts that feature lists like the Shoegaze top ten, 80's by year the band was formed (still gotta finish [...]

Starflyer 59 are back with a 2 disc collection of rarities, b-sides, and covers. You can listen to the whole thing at Spinner.com Posted in 2009, albums, starflyer 59 Tagged: ghosts of the past, jason martin
Yeahhhh, sooo... Not much to talk about here, folks. Move right along. Okay, actually that Starflyer 59 release is a 2-disc collection of b-sides and such that were only available on vinyl til now. It's pretty good. And Neon Horse , that "mystery band" that's really just a bunch of dudes from other former Tooth & Nail bands has their second album out. It's fun times. Also, Owl City is pretty decent, as are Amadou & Miriam , YACHT and Cave In (if [...]
Los Angeles-based artist Mia Kim re-emerges with a concept album about the mysterious and fictitious Sukey Rose, aptly named Who Is Sukey Rose? . Kim landed Jason Martin of Starflyer 59 fame in the producer's chair for this, her sophomore effort, so I was going into this knowing there would significant style changes from her purely acoustic-driven debut, Rumour of Flight . For the most part those changes are positive. I'm not one to down producers because they often tame artists that would otherwise [...]

You know the feeling. You pick up a record and play that first song and it totally bowls you over or it leaves you totally underwhelmed. Regardless, we have pretty lofty expectations for that first track. Many would argue that the first track is absolutely the most important. It's not that the other tracks aren't great, but there is something special in the opening track of an album. We also all know how it feels to love the first track on a record, but be totally ambivalent to the other tracks and there is nothing more frustrating. So, if the [...]
