Frank Yang If you're ever debating what to do on a given evening of either Canadian Musicfest or NXNE , you can always do far worse than to simply post up at either The Horseshoe or Lee's Palace for the entire evening. These Toronto anchors always host a solid bill of bands, both local and international, buzzy and unheralded, covering a swath of genres that will surely have something to delight the ears. Granted, I was there with a more specific mandate than to just take in some music - I wanted to see [...]

Facebook Custom dictates that for tenth anniversaries, the traditional gift is something made from tin and the modern equivalent is aluminum. Or diamond. How on earth do you get from tin to diamond? Happily, Toronto's Paper Bag Records pays no attention to such convention and to mark their tenth year of releasing great music from both Canada and abroad, they've opted to put together three nights of shows at The Great Hall from September 27 to 29 and featuring the best of their current roster as well as a surprise and welcome return [...]

David Black That Ryan Adams' retirement from music - declared at the start of 2009 as a result of personal, medical, and industry factors - wouldn't last was never in question. You don't go from being as prolific as he had been over the past decade and a half to radio silence without a relapse or two. That said, he made a pretty good go of it for a while, busying himself with writing and being Mr. Mandy Moore. By early 2010, however, he was clearly ready to get back to making music [...]
![Best of 2010: Canadian Albums [TOP 10]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3079862_lg.jpg)
Finally the time has come. After a month of listening and re-listening the Canadian albums that has been released in the year 2010 . I have made my Top 10 (11) since there is a tie and totally forgot to put down one record which should be on this list. Since I was going to do a Top 50 which went down to 75. If you want ot check out the whole list of the Top 75, it is on this page . Be surprised if this album is not #1 like everyone [...]

I was somewhat hesitant on doing this list. But I was like heck with it and list down my favorite shows of 2010. Going through the photos I've taken in 2010. I made a list of my Top 20 favorite shows in and out of Ottawa. Enjoy the photos. Please comment if you feel a show was missing. Caribou and Toro Y Moi at Babylon Nightclub The first of two shows Caribou did in 2010. The show on May 4, 2010 was fun [...]

Here is another installment of what to expect on the Best of 2010 list. This time being "Overall". I don't just focus on Canadian music, I do check out stuff from the USA and the UK. Overall being albums outside of Canada that was released in 2010. As before in the " Canadian albums of 2010 " no albums that was released in late 2009. There will be some Canadian albums that made a splash outside of Canada crossing over into this list. I really need your help/input on which albums from the USA, [...]

2010 is almost ending soon and its time to do a year end list on music. I know its going to be annoying for those "Best Of" list. I think its fun doing it. Starting today I will re-listen the albums that came out in 2010. (Sorry EPs and albums that came out in late 2009 can not qualify) I will be doing a Top 50 list. Like I did last year I will post them separately from #50-#41 and etc. There might be last minute changes, some albums might be dropped out and [...]

Frank Yang "Thanks for coming out on such short notice." It was hard to tell if Win Butler was smirking when he said this, midway through the first night of Arcade Fire's surprise two-night stand at the Music Hall in Toronto this past Friday night. After all, they had given the city just over 48 hours notice that these performances would be happening - though they did offer teasers throughout the week - prompting a mad scramble of canceled plans and fake sick days so that fans could line up for the one-per-person admission [...]

youarestars.com Usually, the process goes that a band releases a record, then tours it, and then if it's done well and seems like it can be squeezed a little longer, puts out a companion album of remixes and b-sides. Stars appear to be set on doing things, if not in reverse, then in an order of their own choosing, convention be damned. Shortly after making public the June 22 release date for their fifth album The Five Ghosts , the band announced that they would tour said record [...]

Having loved Stars since first hearing 'Elevator Love Letter', I was excited to finally see them in person. It was only after I purchased a ticket that I learned they would be playing their forthcoming album, The Five Ghosts , in its entirety. It takes a brave band to perform that much new material without alienating the audience. Thankfully, the initial unfamiliarity quickly gave in to a massive love-in between the band and the crowd. I had a less successful experience with Islands in that hazy period between Return to the Sea and Arm's [...]
Here is another installment of the singles chart. There is no change in the Top 5. Mostly a jump from Broken Social Scene and The New Pornographers due to both albums being out on May 4th. New entries from Stephanie are The Love Language, Harlem and Hanoi Janes. While my new entry is Kelis's Acapella and the link for the Youtube is the Bimbo Jones Remix. Here is this week's Top 10 for the week of May 9-15. This time you can listen to the songs and added the "Bubbling Under" in this entry. [...]

Facebook There was welcome and unexpected news in the inbox yesterday morning with the announcement that Sarah Harmer was back. It didn't seem like she'd been away that long, but now that I think about it, the last time I saw her in any context was at Wolfe Island in 2007 with the reunited Weeping Tile , and it's been almost five years since the release of her last album I'm A Mountain . So June 22, when her latest effort Oh Little Fire [...]

So, sorry I haven't had any posts this week... I was incapacitated all week if it is any consolation... I'm not sure why that would stop me from posting but..... A lot went dooooown this week (including several excellent album releases: Titus Andronicus, Broken Bells, the Morning Benders and more), so here goes it. MGMT :: Flash Delirium Definitely the biggest thing of the week, this is the first single from their upcoming album, Congratulations , and I love it. [...]

That's tonight and probably the hotest ticket in town here in Toronto. XM radio's 'The Verge' (channel 52, focusing on new and emerging indie and alternative sounds from Canad) has decided to give away $50,000 to support Canadian music by giving away 25k to the best album and 25k to the best artist. Also, this award (unlike next week's Polaris prize) is determined by the public in online voting. The long list was created from bands in regular rotation on the station, starting with 150 artists and 73 albums, [...]
