This year, famed Canadian indie label Arts & Crafts is celebrating its 10th anniversary. As part of the festivities, they've issued a retrospective album and will stage the Field Trip Festival this June. They've also just announced plans for a new compilation titled X , which collects new collaborations between acts on its roster. The 10-track album features both original compositions and re-interpretations from artists Broken Social Scene , Feist , Stars , Chilly Gonzales , Timber Timbre, Dan Mangan, and many more. A tracklist will be revealed shortly. [...]

Frank Yang So yesterday I talked about where and what Rouyn-Noranda was; today I will do the same for FME . You don't need to be bilingual to discern that "Festival de musique émergente" implies a mandate of focusing on new and upcoming artists, primarily but not exclusively from Québec, with a few relatively big names to bring in the less musically adventurous. It was started ten years ago when the organizers were tired of driving to Montréal eight hours away to see shows and so they started a festival as a pretence to [...]

It is the last week of August. This means it is the last week of summer. Here is this week singles chart for the week ending August 26 - September 1. This week's #1 goes to Crystal Castles with Plague. Having found a Youtube posting of their recent Reading Festival. I had to make them #1. There are new debuts from Feist, A.C. Newman and Yamantaka // Sonic Titan. Check it out. This [...]

Zuzana Hudackova It's shaping up to be an Autumn of Can-rock double bills high on value. Folks thought that it was a pretty impressive pairing of talent when it was announced last month that Dan Mangan and The Rural Alberta Advantage were teaming up to cross the country in October, or the June announcement that Metric and Stars were hitting the country's arenas together, but that were just the first of a number of impressive double-bills looking to share driving duties across Canada this Fall. [...]

Frank Yang Just as a point of reference, when someone IMs you late on a Friday afternoon and asks, "do you want to go see Feist at the CBC's Glenn Gould Studio tomorrow night?", the only appropriate answer is yes. And so it was that after assuming that it'd be too much trouble to finagle one of the hottest tickets in a long weekend with no shortage of hot tickets, one was handed to me. No I'm not bragging. Okay I'm bragging a little. But the point being that I didn't expect [...]

Frank Yang What happens when The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart meet the pains of being busted up in shoulder? You take advantage of the fact that said band used an off day on their touring itinerary to play an in-store a day before their official show, so as to avoid having to stand around The Opera House for three hours, possibly/probably looped on meds. Which is basically what happened on Monday night at Sonic Boom. Despite the fact that Pains' self-titled debut was one of my favourites of [...]

Welcome to the Annual Vague Space Indie/Alternative Christmas Music Spectacular (TM). I was able to set aside my great urge to say "bah humbug" to this whole season this year and to get into the mood long enough for this post, so hopefully this will get you in the spirit if you are like me and saw Christmas lights glowing in your neighborhood the day after Thanksgiving and said "Are you fucking kidding me? Already?" Anyway, merry happy or something. Enjoy. Download Bishop Allen - "You'll Never Find My [...]

As we progress through the growth and dissemination of indie rock becoming a more popular and ubiquitous type of music, we are starting to see a few books come out on some of the bands and groups that were influential through the late 90s and early 2000s in this way. I covered Out Noise , the book about Merge Records late last year , and this book shares a lot of similarities to that book. There isn't necessarily a lot of storytelling or writing, it is more told through snippets, interviews, anecdotes and vignettes that cover [...]

The Canadian indie supergroup, Broken Social Scene , have long since been on a roll following the release of their 5th full-length album, Forgiveness Rock Record in May of this year. The collective consists of an ever-changing roster of musicians including Leslie Feist, Stars, Apostle of Hustle, amongst a slew of others. The music video for their second single off of the aforementioned album, "Forced To Love" features holographic type visuals of the band. Check out the video, directed by Makapoon here: Forgiveness Rock Record [...]

by teepoo Happy Canada's Day! To celebrate I decided to feature music from all the provinces and territories. Believe it wasn't easy, especially for the territories, but here is some Canadian music I hope you will enjoy. There is no particular reason why I chose each of these artists out of all the artists from their respective provinces. Some of these are known, some unknown but I hope you will hear something new and enjoyable! BRITISH [...]

And why not? This might be the best idea yet :) I kind of missed the recap - especially since I've been showcasing really nice songs as of late. I'm not posting the songs here though, too much effort - so it'd be best to visit the site everyday if you want a link for a download (if you don't know it yet, yer lyric of the day songs up top on the right side there can be downloaded by a simple right-click and Save As). If you missed hearing the song though, our dear old Facebook page [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Canada K'naan 's 'Wavin' Flag' is quickly becoming a global anthem of optimism and relief thanks to its simple yet indelible refrain: "When I get older, I will be stronger. They'll call me freedom, just like a waving flag." Originally released on the Somali-Canadian rapper's 2009 album 'Troubadour' 'Wavin' Flag"'has since exceeded the bounds of K'naan's catalogue and taken on a life of its own. Last week in Vancouver, nearly fifty Canadian artists in town for the Olympics secretly [...]

Anyone who’s anyone has this song on rotation. So we figured we’d get a post up about it a week or so after the leak. Better late than never…right? Broken Social Scene is a Canadian indie co-op of sorts. Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning are the founders of the group. After releasing their first album, the ambient Feel Good Lost in 2001, they pulled other Toronto-based musicians into the band, including Metric’s Emily Haines , Leslie Feist and Stars’ Amy Millan . This track is off their forthcoming album Forgiveness Rock [...]
