Continuing the surge of experimental-pop from Montreal, Pop Winds excel in diverging colorful psychedelia and indie-rock to create a sound that is familiarly addictive, yet still relatively incomparable. On "Owl Eyes", the duo's vocals combine for multiple harmonies over squirts of brass and synth arpeggios, the wide variety of synths sliding and squirming all over [...]
Filed under: Songs , Exclusive , Clash of the Cover Songs The Rules for Battle: For each contest, we pit versions of the same song by two different artists in a head-to-head death match for musical supremacy. (Sometimes it will be the original recording vs. a cover version; other times it will be two different covers.) Then it's up to you to decide: Listen to and vote on which version you think should emerge victorious and which should be sent packing. May the best band win! [...]

Librarians are certainly different than the professionals they take their name from. Their recent material finds solace in its own untidy ambition as opposed to systematic convention, a flexible ideology that allows their plethora of influences to shed their skins most appropriately. Their second album, Present Passed, will likely be one of 2010's breakouts [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours Portland, Ore. trio Stars of Track and Field formed in the middle of the last decade and bubbled up from the indie underground via their 2007 debut, the atmospheric 'Centuries Before Love and War.' Album number two, 2009's 'A Time for Lions,' saw the band pare down the electronics for melodic rock guitars and a simplified sound that accentuated bare-bones songwriting over lush layers of instrumentation. Leading up to SXSW [...]
It's been a long time since we've found a great new CD on a Target endcap. I mean, we all have to admit it's pretty rare. A few years ago, though, Mookie discovered Stars of Track and Field in just this way. Not on the interwebs, not at the indie record store, not on the radio (that's for sure), not by browsing iTunes. But it was on display on an endcap at Target. And that first album we discovered, Centuries Before Love and War , was excellent. I still love it. They actually [...]
The second annual Harvest of Hope Music Festival will return to St. Augustine, FL this March 12-14, and one thing is becoming quite clear: music's most underrated music festival is quickly becoming one of music's most stellar music festivals. This year's lineup once again again showcases a diverse roster of national and international acts, including alt-rock legend Billy Bragg, acclaimed folk-rock outfit The Mountain Goats, psychedelic rockers Dr. Dog, indie sensations Rogue Wave, UK punk band Leatherface, and the hardcore group Senses Fail. And that's just getting started. Man Man, Delta Spirit, Anti-Flag, The [...]
Filed under: What's That Song? 'End of All Time,' by Stars of Track and Field If you've been following ' Grey's Anatomy ' at all this season, you've probably noticed some big changes. There's been the merging of two hospitals -- and with it an influx of new characters who are carefully being written into more prominent roles as the plot line advances. Seattle Grace Hospital's morale has been low, title character Meredith Gray is hardly ever her "dark and twisty" [...]

[Let's see now, which direction is Universal City? ...] Silversun Pickups have been piling on the miles since they released their sophomore album "Swoon" — the L.A. quartet has played 33 shows since the middle of September. They're back on their home turf for today's inaugural LA 101 event at the Gibson Amphitheatre, headlining a main-stage lineup that includes Dengue Fever (7 p.m.), Matt & Kim (7:45) and the Dandy Warhols (8:40). And there's fine matinee entertainment on the KROQ-FM locals [...]

If you've never been to the Middle East in Cambridge, MA, it's an absolute must. I had the privilege of squeezing into the Middle East Upstairs, which was about the size of my apartment's living room, to see Stars of Track and Field open for Lights. Who are you mystery man? Your music is wonderful. There was also an opening one-man act before Stars of Track and Field; I walked in about half way through his set. His friend was kind enough to give me his name, but [...]

Expectations are a funny thing. Being new to the band, before listening to this album I noticed that it was on Wind-Up Records , the home of Creed , Evanescence , 12 Stones and the like. I was pleasantly surprised that the album owed more to Brit-Pop than to their label-mates. The band has retained some of the electronic elements of 2006's Centuries Before Love and War . These are most effective on the slower songs that close the album. The question is will the expectations of fans of their last [...]

She can sing, play several instruments and draw. You've probably heard her song "Last Thing on Your Mind" in commercials, in which case, you know how talented the Canadian artist Lights is. If you live in the Philadelphia area and would like to see the pop rock singer, simply comment in the replies with why you should win by 9 a.m. EST on Sept. 30 . We'll pick a lucky winner to get a free pair of tix to the show. The show is [...]

I'd heard the name of the band, Stars of Track and Field , about a thousand times, but had only heard a few tracks here and there, none of them sticking in my mind. SoTaF started out and I snapped a few pics, but was ready to move on after a few minutes. They had quite a crowd of people who were digging the tunes pretty heavily, I must say that. Stars of Track and Field - End of All Time

Well, here is part II as promised. I pared it down from six to five. I am somewhat going "out on a limb" on this one because, quite frankly, I am not very up on these bands. But, when I weeded through the new releases list for this week, these intrigued me. As I said before, I don't have the funds to buy all these albums. So, don't expect to read below a long write-up review on them. And, in some cases, I had to rely on written reviews by others to get a better understanding of the music. This [...]

The coasts of the United States never seem to be at a shortage for festivals, but travel to the heart of the country and festivals are scarce. Chicago does have Lollapalooza, which is a fun festival, but very mainstream. So the addition of Monolith Festival has been a haven for the Midwest hipster to see new buzz indie bands and some classic gems in one of the most beautiful venues in the world: Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, Colorado. The first day of the festival was a cold and rainy mess, [...]
