Mark your calendar: Three photographers whose work I have been privileged to publish at varying times on Buzz Bands LA are mounting an exhibition beginning Friday at Ballard's Artwork Framing & Gallery (1568 Sunset Blvd.) in Echo Park. The group show will feature a mix of portraiture, performance and candid photographs by Sterling Andrews , Jeff Koga and Laurie Scavo . Opening night kicks off at 8 p.m. and includes performances by Ferraby Lionheart and a stripped-down version of the Parson Red Heads . The exhibition ends Oct. 16. Above, one [...]
Silverlake, 2008 moved to the El Rey Theatre for a night and they brought visuals with them for the Tar Fest. The three bands on the lineup all showed that they not only are up to the challenge of performing at the larger venues, they also know how to make use of the additional space, sight and sound.

It was a night for big guitars Monday — and, as it happened, big turnouts. The Buzz Bands LA celebration at the Echoplex featured a foursome of bands whose fervent indie rock played well to a crowd that exceeded 400. The Broken Remotes kicked off the night with a set of buzzsaw, rhythm-heavy rockers. Amusement Parks on Fire [with Michael Feerick, above] followed with 35 minutes of gorgeous, gargantuan shoegaze before the Lassie Foundation [with Jeff Schroeder, top photo] took over and fashioned its own pop-leaning wall of sound. Magic Mirror closed [...]
Photo by Sterling Andrews Long time Rock Insider favs The Transmissions unveiled a new video for their track "Over Saving Mountain" which was included on their Greater Imperfections EP released late last year. The DIY mix-media wonderland created in this video is absolutely fabulous. Over Saving Mountain (music video)

If I had to guess, I'd say Sunset Junction is going to happen this year. I know its status still seems to be a subject of debate in some circles, but suffice to say things will be worked out in time for the big charity street fair Aug. 22-23. Can't get anyone to clue me in on who the headliners might be, but the annual contingent of local bands is strong, as always. So far, on the rock stage: Warpaint , War Tapes , Love Grenades , Local Natives [pictured at SXSW], [...]
Silversun Pickups are a great live band and seemed especially excited to be playing the Echoplex for the home-crowd and Pablo. They played the majority of Swoon with new radio hit "Panic Switch" and yes, "Lazy Eye" and "Well Thought Out Twinkles" also made the list. These songs from Carnavas display an extra seasoning and "Kissing Families" (from their EP) has also taken on new bite. SSPU has the quietloudquietloud formula down: Nikki Monninger's melodious bass line churning through the distortion, the rapid-fire drumming of Christopher Guanlao, sonic structure from keyboardist Joe Lester and effects-laden guitar [...]

What do you get when you combine rock 'n' roll musicians, a love for trompe l'oeil and a fascination with 18th- and 19th-century portraiture? "Gooseberries," apparently. Which is not the same as goosebumps, although L.A. photographer Sterling Andrews might have gotten some of those too in creating the images in her "album," which will be released by Eenie Meenie Records next week. "I wanted to do a project that wasn't just about rock 'n' roll bands," the veteran rock photographer says. "We learn so much about ourselves [...]
