Despite suffering debasement from low-quality acts and living as a cultural punchline, emo has persevered as a legitimate sub-genre. Songwriters like Jesse Lacey , Patrick Stickles , Max Bemis and David Bazan have managed to preserve the essence of intelligence, self-awareness and honesty that has defined the genre as far back as Minor Threat, while still progressing the sounds in their own ways. After an explosion in popularity (and an equal and opposite backlash) in the late 90s and early Aughts, great emo records are certainly harder to find than they were 20, or [...]
Cloud Nothings - Attack On Memory By Paul Faller Discussing the title of the third Cloud Nothings record in a recent interview with Pitchfork, Dylan Baldi said that he "wanted to make it apparent that it's an attack on the memory of what the band was." It's fair to say that Attack On Memory makes good on this promise, marking a significant progression from the lo-fi pop punk sound of his previous LPs. As if to get his [...]
This past week featured new albums by Cloud Nothings and the Hold Steady's frontman Craig Finn . Cloud Nothings' Dylan Baldi is taking a harder approach than his past offerings with the help of Steve Albini on Attack on Memory . Even though Baldi joked about Albini's influence in a recent interview, the producer's touches are clearly heard on singles No Future/No Past and No Sentiment . [...]
Infamously cantankerous studio rat/national treasure Steve Albini doesn't like to be called a record producer. He prefers the term "recording engineer." That's a dry, clinical term for what Albini actually does, but it makes sense that he'd prefer to be seen that way. Over the past few decades, Albini has overseen the creation of countless numbers of recorded artifacts. And even though he's been an outspoken opponent of the major-label system (and of other underground-rock heroes), he's known to work with just about anyone who requests his services, whether it's a major-label juggernaut like '90s radio-grunge rulers Bush or the [...]

Today is January 24th, which means that the new Cloud Nothings album, Attack On Memory , is finally released for public consumption. I have posted two songs already from this album and I am posting two more here, so that means you've already heard half of the album (the album only contains 8 tracks, sadly). This album is getting a decent amount of hype for its giant shift in sound from the band's previous sound. The accolades are well deserved because if you compare these songs to the band's songs from a [...]

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Dylan Baldi is hot right now, there's no mistake about it. Ever since releasing the self-titled Cloud Nothings album, his star has continued to rise, and deservedly so. Now, his band returns with their latest album, Attack on Memory , determined to shift gears a little bit by going into the studio with the heralded Steve Albini . The collaboration definitely alters the group's sound, yet through it all [...]

Cloud Nothings put their killer brand new album up on the interwebz for everyone to stream before it's drop date of January 24th via Carpark Records . This album has been burning into my ear drums for last few weeks and I don't forsee it falling out the rotation anytime soon. The Steve Albini produced Attack on Memory will definitely be on many peoples year-end lists come December. Have an eargasm below.

Steve Albini is grinding. The Shellac frontman and rock producer extraordinaire has helped Cloud Nothings flip the script on 2012 with their forthcoming album, is working with the equally volatile Screaming Females on their next effort , and for the trifecta Albini will also have his signature on British garage revivalists The Cribs ' forthcoming album (via NME ) . Tentatively titled In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull, the album also features production from Mercury Rev/Flaming Lips mainstay Dave Fridmann and a little bit of self-production from the band itself. [...]

New Brunswick, New Jersey's own Screaming Females will return on April 3rd with their Steve Albini-produced fifth LP, Ugly . Recorded in Chicago at Albini's Electrical Audio studios, the end result spans 14 tracks and bills itself as the "perfect combination of raw energy and honed musicianship." As an early taste, check out a performance of the album opener and lead single, "It All Means Nothing", from the band's recent NPR Tiny Desk Concert. The 73 single, backed by live version of "A New Kid" from a session recorded at WFMU, will be available exclusively during the [...]

Back in the day, when two artists didn't like each other, they'd deal with it in relatively low-profile ways: A snippy backstage comment, or a pointed interview comment. Maybe they'd toss in a lyrical jab, the way Lynyrd Skynyrd did toward Neil Young on "Sweet Home Alabama," but that would be just about it. That's all changed. If, say, the Kurt Cobain/Axl Rose VMA-backstage kerfuffle had happened today, the resounding Twitterpocalypse would have the over-capacity whale showing up for three solid days whenever you tried to reload the site. And every time an artist is even vaguely annoyed at something [...]
