When you get the time, you'll want to watch both of the videos below. One is a promotional video for Portland's Stumptown Coffee Roaster and the second video is 12 minutes of pure coffee porn. And, when you've finished watching those videos, then definitely head over to Mule Radio to listen to this fantastic interview between Glenn Fleishman and Tony Konecny, who founded the small batch coffee roasting subscription service Tonx . Blue Bottle Coffee, which has become a staple of the Bay Area, the equivalent of Stumptown Coffee for that area, has taken $20 million from venture capitalists , who are banking that the area chain can go national and maintain its coffee snob street cred. Oddly enough, the last coffee chain to take outside investment for national expansion was Stumptown. Would love to see both of them succeed even if they don't spread like Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts. Blue Bottle and Stumptown are both [...]
Seems like it would be hard to keep up the energy of the Santigold/Danny Brown back-to-back close out of day one, but day two of The FADER FORT Presented by Converse was equally energized. The ... read more

Nearly 200 bands from the PacNorWes' and beyond descended upon Stumptown, America (Portland) from September 7-11 for MusicFestNW , a five-day fête of mostly Americana/indie rock, hosted in more than 20 venues. Seattle radio station extraordinaire KEXP also rocked up, and took over the city's brilliant Doug Fir Lounge, bringing happy radio listeners and all-ages crowds some free day sessions with 12 of the more-awesome bands that were passing through. And hey, guess what? I was there, too. Why? Because Portland rules: there's beers, hippies, hipsters, fixie bikes, good food, nice venues and awesome donuts. And I spent [...]

It was many years ago, while at the Savers on Broadway , the thrift store that's most likely responsible for the existence of this rag, that I first saw a Danner boot. It was an older model that's no longer made, and had a big ol' MADE IN THE USA tag on it, before that was a discussion point on the blogs. Before there were blogs. I bought them, did some research when I got home (there was internet back then), and, well, if you hike, then you probably [...]

It might be blasphemous around these parts in Boston to praise anything other than Dunkin' Donuts' ice coffee, but I'm mighty pissed about moving from Portland and not having the chance to try Stumptown 's cold brew coffee. The bottles look like a Red Stripe bottle and were designed by Jessie Whipple Vickery at Kunstkraft . Currently, the little stubbies are only for sale in their Portland locations and I can only imagine how tasty this would be come the summer mornings. It's possible they will eventually arrive at their NYC location (29th and [...]

The Ace Hotel, situated at 20 West 29 th Street, squarely in the Southern side of Midtown, seems like an unlikely candidate for hyper-edgy hipsterdom. But the boutique chainlet (there are other locations in Portland, Seattle and Palm Springs) feels more like the edge of the Julian Schnabel-run art world circa 1982 than the edge of the Donald Trump-run Times Square Disney-ghetto circa 2011. Simply put, it’s a great place to hang out. Next time you’re in the hood (isn’t your office around there?), slip in for a hot cup of Red [...]
