Clif’s Favorite Albums from 2012

Clif’s Favorite Albums from 2012 Clif's top ten list for 2012 with twenty others receiving honorable mention: 10. Cat Meat – Cat Meat We previewed Cat Meat’s self-titled debut as a Friday Free Feature on November 9, and it’s been in constant rotation between my iPod and car stereo. A complex, experimental alt. country/folk album that claims influences such as Wilco, Sparklehorse and Califone; the classic psychedelic experimenalist, Captain Beefheart; and the legendary bluesmen Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Willie McTell. When you listen, they’re all there in subtle drips, drabs and dollops. [...]

Review/Listen: David Byrne & St. Vincent – Love This Giant

Review/Listen: David Byrne & St. Vincent – Love This Giant The title of this album is incorrect or, rather, incomplete. Yes, this is a collaboration between David Byrne and Annie Clark of St. Vincent  but there's a third, equally important member: the brass. Love This Giant , out on  4AD/Todo Mundo , is absolutely packed with brass sections, melodies, and blasts. It gives off a temporal vibe, especially when placed in contrast with the electronic flourishes that are provided by the two talented musicians. Each track finds a new way to use the instruments [...]

New St. Vincent & David Byrne: “Weekend In The Dust”

David Byrne & St. Vincent - 'Who' // Lyrics [HD]
David Byrne and St. Vincent have shared the second track from their forthcoming brassy collaborative album, Love This Giant . "Weekend In The Dust" doesn't feature any vocals from the Talking Heads leader, but St. Vincent makes that up with what has got to be the catchiest hook she's ever written. Listen to the track on their website ; check out first single "Who" below if you haven't already. Love This Giant is out September 11th. [...]

Song : David Byrne & St. Vincent : “Weekend In The Dust”

St. Vincent & Craig Wedren: “Sisters of the Moon” (Fleetwood Mac Cover)

It’s Annie Clark’s turn to cover Fleetwood Mac for this summer's Just Tell Me That You Want Me tribute compilation, and she’s collaborated with Craig Wedren of Shudder to Think on a crunchingly distorted cover of “Sisters of the Moon.” Clark only takes over lead vocals toward the song’s latter third, but you can’t escape those classic guitar wails – this cover sometimes reminds us of the doom-y, operatic b-side “Grot” from her Record Store Day single, with, of course, an added (and excellent) vocal performance from Wedren. [...]

Check Out: St. Vincent – “This Wave”

St. Vincent ’s incredible Strange Mercy dropped last summer and Annie Clark’s releases since then have leaned more toward the raucous (see her incendiary Record Store Day 7”), but here’s a bonus track from the Japanese release of Strange Mercy that you’ll dig if you preferred her more orchestral (but just as dark) cuts, “This Wave.” Over a ton of Old West echoed whistling, military drums, haunting piano, and spiraling strings, Clark lays down chillingly beautiful and classically inscrutable vocals. The end product sounds [...]

[Listen] St. Vincent - "This Wave"

[Listen] St. Vincent - "This Wave" It's hard not to dig anything Annie Clark and St. Vincent have done in the past few years. After releasing her third album, Strange Mercy , many have swooned for her sultry vocals and intricate guitar work. And today we can swoon once more as a track that has slipped through the net for many has hit the net. It's taken from the Japanese version of her latest release and is titled "This Wave". See what you make of it below. (Via LB4YB / Tumblr )

Review/Listen: Daniel Hart – “The Orientalist”

Whether you know it or not, you may well have been exposed to Texan multi-instrumentalist Daniel Hart . The most obvious and likely exposure would be through St. Vincent , both as a member of her backing band as well as being featured on "Actor" . But if you’ve listened to or seen John Vanderslice , Other Lives , or The Rosebuds , you’ve at least heard Hart’s contributions. There’s even Hart’s former band [...]

St. Vincent- “Krokodil” (Loved)

St. Vincent - Krokodil
The a-side to St. Vincent's new, non-album Record Store day 73, and it's a blood pumper. Between Annie Clark's ferocious screams and the heavily distorted guitars, St. Vincent takes no prisoners on this one; reminding me of some of Kim Gordon's more aggressive moments in the Sonic Youth discography. There's a really twisted chorus effect on Clark's voice that makes her vocal delivery breach the threshold of insanity. Really short, solid, and punked out track. Considering the nature of the song, I'm not surprised the song didn't make it onto Strange Mercy -assuming the [...]

Rec’d: St. Vincent – “Krokodil” and “Grot”

KROKODIL // [HD]
Nothing is better than when St. Vincent gets really fucking heavy , right? Nothing is better than when Annie Clark , she of the birdlike bone structure and mad guitar skills, gets totally, brutally punk on you, right? Right? If you’re with us on this, check out both sides of her totally unreal Record Store Day 7” release, Krokodil . [Listen] St. Vincent - "Krokodil" x "Grot"

[Listen] St. Vincent - "Krokodil" x "Grot" Another Record Store Day release that many were hankering for was a 7" from Annie Clark aka St. Vincent . On that 7" were two brand new tracks from the guitar whiz and boy are they good. The tracks are dirty, fuzzy monsters that you'll just keep on going back to again and again for more listens. Check out "Krokodil" and "Grot" below. "Krokodil" "Grot"

Listen: St. Vincent - "Krokodil" / "Grot"

Listen: St. Vincent - "Krokodil" / "Grot" With Record Store Day being over, all of the exclusive content that was reserved for the day's release has begun to surface on the Internet. Listen to St. Vincent's contribution: her 7" featuring the two new songs, "Krokodil" and "Grot". Read more »

A.$.A.P. Rocky Live @ Coachella 2012 [Full Performance] A$AP ASAP Rocky
You've probably already seen Tupac's hologram at the Coachella Valley music festival from this weekend (spreading for the first time on two weekends) but entire sets were broadcasted live on Youtube on three channels with about 25 gigs you could watch from your "couchella" every day or night. For those of you who didn't have the time to stay late in front of the computer, here are the full live performances from Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, St. Vincent (with an epic crowdsurf), Azealia Banks, Explosions in the Sky, A.$.A.P Rocky, Frank [...]

St. Vincent- “Cheerleader”

St. Vincent - 'Cheerleader'
A track for the song "Cheerleader," which comes off the latest St. Vincent album, Strange Mercy . The album made it onto my list of favorite albums from 2011 , and you can check our review of it here . Look for this album now on 4AD. A lot like the video for " Cruel ," this song's video deals with being singled out, critiqued, controlled. The ending is just as depressing, too.

St. Vincent on Conan O'Brien

If you've seen Elvis Costello's performance on SNL from the 70's, you'll know why this is funny.
