RIAA stalwart company Universal has apparently been so busy lecturing the world about how taking things without paying is wrong that it appears to have forgotten to pay any royalties to any Sugar Hill label artists for years and years. With hits "Love Is Strange," "Pillow Talk," and "Rapper's Delight," the multi-faceted entertainer and entrepreneur left a strong legacy.

The headline death this past month was that at 75 of Sylvia Robinson, who featured on this blog before with her 1973 hit "Pillow Talk", a song taught Donna Summer all she needed to know about pleasured moaning to a disco beat. But Robinson was much more important than that. As the founder of Sugar Hill Records, she produced and released the first ever rap hit ("Rappers' Delight"). Robinson's label also released what I still regard as the greatest rap record of all time, Grandmaster Flash's monumental "The Message". Also notable is the death a day later of [...]
Sylvia Robinson, co-founder of Sugar Hill Records, passed away at the age of 75. She is considered the mother of hip hop. Before Sugar Hill Records she had her own music career singing R&B, soul... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]
Syliva Robinson, who co-owned Sugar Hill Records, has died . Starting out in music as a singer in the 50s, Sylvia was half of the duo Mickey & Sylvia, who wrote and recorded their own work. Love Is Strange is one of theirs: Love Is Strange was a massive hit; it crossed over into the main Billboard charts and, more lucratively, was covered by a rich mix of acts. Buddy Holly, Bo Diddley and The Everly Brothers had a go, but more surprisingly, so did Johnny Thunders and Patti Palladin: [...]
In an odd bit of symmetry, we learned that the Sugarhill Gang will be performing a halftime show at this Sunday's Lynx game just a few short hours after hearing of the death of Sugar Hill Records' Sy
Sylvia Robinson, singer, producer, and founder of hip-hop label Sugar Hill Records, passed away this morning of congestive heart failure at Meadowlands Hospital in Secaucus, New Jersey. She was 75.

The Sugar Hill Gang are working on their first album in over a decade. In addition to a new album, they will also be featured in a documentary -- named "I Want My Name Back" -- about their rise to fame, place in hip-hop history and their 20 plus year battle to own their rap names, which they recently won, according to report by AllHipHop.com . Roger Paradiso, who also produced "The Thomas Crown Affair", "The Manhattan Project" and "City by the Sea", is shooting the documentary. Paradiso spoke with AllHipHop.com about the Sugar Hill [...]

No sabemos qué [...]
Ohhh, this is always a fun game. Many people think that the best music comes from the year that they were born. Well, step aside every other year...1979 just took first place. I mean, how can you argue with the tail end of motown, the birth of punk, ska and hip hop with a bundle of classics wrapped into one year. I know I am forgetting some amazing songs (Pink Floyd, The Cars, The Ramones...Journey)...these are just some of my favourites. Enjoy! Free mp3: Clash - Train in Vain [...]

I don't know anybody that doesn't like old school hip hop. The electro bounce, the fun lyrics, there is just something about Sugarhill Gang, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash etc that warms the cockles and gets dancefloors moving. That's why I often wonder why there isn't more contemporary hip hop that overtly references those early days of the genre. We get plenty roots blues musicians and folk groups obsessed with the authenticity of their sound, so why not more early hip hop outfits? Dream Jefferson don't exactly fit that mould, but they certainly have an affinity for Bambaataa's electro [...]

Up and coming producer and DJ, fellow Vancouverite Lance Lasheras, aka THE SLAG, has just released his first EP entitled Midnight Express under Champion Beats and it's already topping Beatport charts. Man, did The SLAG get it right this time. Midnight Express features 4 bangin tracks, expertly mixing 3 parts dirty electro with 1 part house influenced sounds and 1 part Oh Fuck Yeah, creating the perfect aural cocktail. The distortion fucks you up while the house influence energizes you - It's like 4 Loko for your ears! Here's the tracklisting with [...]

Apache - The Sugarhill Gang An at times unfortunately offensive and hard to swallow Native American minstrel show, here's why it's in my head:

I'm not really sure what 'die-hard' (translation: uptight) hip hop fans think of Justin Timberlake. But I'm not ashamed to admit I have a soft spot for him. Have I ever bought a JT album? No. Will I ever? Probably not. But it's hard to deny the man's talent. I recall the moment that Timberlake first won me over. 2003. I was in Amsterdam. As a result, I my motor skills were impaired. You can make up your own mind as to the reasons why that might have been the case. After arriving back at my [...]

Photo courtesy of DHDesign Philadelphia's music scene doesn't get up early enough for a morning roundup. While the rest of the world is sipping on their lattes and reading about international affairs, we're nursing our hangovers and trying to shake the ringing out of our ears. But that doesn't mean we don't like to (eventually) stay informed. Snooze Alarm presents Philly's most important local-music-related news, whenever the scene finally [...]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =LGLgX2tiIow Now I'm not one to bash stuff too often on Salacious - my philosophy is that if I'm not covering everything out there that's good, why waste time with the bad. So in living up to that, I should say that I don't actually think this is a bad track, and it's definitely a great video. I have a lot of respect for Bob Sinclar, and think he's an incredible artist who doesn't just make pop music (though he does make incredible pop music!) So with that long preface in mind, I wanted to have [...]
