Dot To Dot | Bristol 02.06.12 Dot To Dot has come a long way since occupying three venues across Nottingham on the May bank holiday weekend, 2005. Now spanning three cities – Bristol joined in the fun in 2007, Manchester jumped aboard in 2010 and a brief flirtation with London in 2008 lasted only a year – and over 20 venues this travelling festival has become a must for the up and coming hopefuls of the UK’s alternative scene. So while the headliners of the larger venues include The Drums and Pulled Apart [...]
After four packed days and nights of music, the Summer Camp Music Festival came to a close on Sunday in a fitting way, by extending into the sunrise hours during sets by Pretty Lights and Wyllys and the New York Hustler Ensemble. Sunday also saw two sets from moe. and a set from Umphrey's McGee as well as performances by a bevy of HT faves including Yonder Mountain String Band, Greensky Bluegrass, Galactic, Jane's Addiction and the Tedeschi Trucks Band. [All Photos by [...]
The Summer Camp Music Festival continued on Saturday with a full day of music that included two sets a piece from headliners moe. and Umphrey's McGee (who also played a private set in the venue's church) on the Moonshine and Sunshine stages respectively and the return of Gov't Mule and ALO to the festival as well as performances from plenty of up-and-coming acts such as Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, The Lumineers, Tauk and Orgone. One of the first big sit-ins of Summer Camp took place last night at the Moonshine Stage where Grateful Dead / Furthur guitarist Bob Weir came out during the Primus set for The Other One at the second day of the annual festival in Chillicothe, Illin. The Primus/Bobby connection stems from drummer Jay Lane who has been the drummer in Ratdog since Weir formed the group and currently mans the kit for Primus as he did from the group's start until 1988. In fact, Les takes credit for introducing Lane to original Ratdog bassist Rob Wasserman [...]
Last year Summer Camp released their rather charming debut album Welcome To Condale , a hommage to lo-fi indie, analogue synth-pop and John Hughes movies. It was, we think, a rather overlooked little gem of a record. Well now the British duo are readying the release of their Always EP and here is it's title. There is an eery vibe to the song's verses, before a primary coloured chorus wrestles the song back into more familiar Summer Camp territory. As always, the voices of Jeremy Warmsley and Elizabeth Sankey melt together [...]
Dot to Dot 2012 By Paul Faller Website / Tickets It's arguable that the UK is beginning to suffer from festival fatigue – even big names like Sonisphere have fallen victim to the tough financial climate. With that in mind, city-based festivals are looking like more and more of an attractive proposition, providing the opportunity to pick from a myriad of bands for a fraction of the price of larger events, and with the added bonus that you can worry less about [...]
Constellations 2011 By Russell Warfield November 12, 2011 This year’s Constellations Festival was a double-decker treat for me. Not only was it a second straight year of excellent music at Leeds University Union (and only the second year in total, to boot), but it was also the first time that I managed to get back oop n’rth after graduating from the university earlier this year. Gorgeously decorated stages aside, it was a joy to roam around the place, enjoying performances, supping on pints which didn’t require [...]
I hate to say it, but synthpop is getting old, again. I feel like every other self-identifying "indie" band honors that hit-or-miss period of the 1980s with their own entrances into the arena of synth-laden bubble gum pop. Summer Camp is the latest of such acts, though I admit I find them punchier than the other youngsters. Welcome To Condale , Summer Camp's adolescence-reminiscent debut album, features lots of clapping, clips from 1980s teenage camp movies (Weird Science, Say Anything) and spunky female vocals put against almost deafening synthetic roars. Jeremy Warmsley and Elizabeth Sankey channel St. [...]
Summer Camp - 'Welcome To Condale' (UK Release: 31 Oct '11) // Words: Emily Solan Welcome to Condale, the imagined surroundings of this long-awaited debut release from one of the years greatest prospects, Summer Camp . Encapsulating every emotion that teenagers encounter in life, Elizabeth Sankey and Jeremy Warmsley have packaged love, loss and heartbreak into an audio delight that could soundtrack any 80s Bratpack movie. Opening with the superb [...]
There’s a scene from the mid 90s TV show My So-Called Life (which followed the emotional turbulence of teenagers at Liberty High School) where two of the main characters share a moment in the school corridor in front of their peers. Rebel musician and generally troubled lad Jordan (Jared Leto – long hair, moody), gets together with self-evaluating sophomore Angela (Clare Danes – long hair, moody). There’s slow motion, eye contact, inner turmoil, and will he/won’t he tension stretched out over a heartfelt, cod-grunge 90s alt rock soundtrack (most likely Buffalo Tom). But for us, the scene was [...]
Summer Camp - Welcome To Condale By Rosie Duffield The majority of people who are familiar with Summer Camp have been waiting for Welcome To Condale with eager anticipation. After several singles and an EP, their appetites are finally sated by a full-length album from the London based duo. On first listen, Welcome To Condale seems like it could be the soundtrack to Footloose or The Breakfast Club (or any similar ‘80s teen flick), with its outpouring of [...]
Not so long ago, Summer Camp were so camera-shy, their most telling communication with the world came through their still-active blog of cryptically-titled anonymous family snapshots; an interesting diversion, but hardly audience-friendly. At that early stage the band wouldn’t reveal their names even when given a glowing write-up in a coveted New Band of the Day spot on Paul Lester’s Guardian blog. Fast-forward from early 2010 to late 2011, they shrouds of anonymity have been cast away, and we can non-exclusively reveal the London-based duo comprise obscurantist Jeremy [...]

Previous Crack in the Road interviewee's Summer Camp have just dropped the first track from their upcoming debut full length record. The musical composition is similar to previous work, yet there's darker undertones lurking in the lyrical content. Seemingly documenting a love-hate relationship with an unrelenting stalker, "I'd make you love me so much you'd have to ask permission to breath, whines Elizabeth Sankey, one half of the boy-girl indie pop duo. It's certainly a positive step for Summer Camp, incorporating more disco friendly melodies; so whilst we eagerly await their debut record, download I Want You below. [...]

An Alternative Christmas
I'll be honest, I do love Christmas. I have a lot of time for Wham and Mariah Carey, and I am already excited for the multiple viewings of Home Alone and Elf in a week or so. However, there are only so many times you can listen to Chris Rea before biting your own hands off, and Band Aid has the unfortunate side effect of inducing a death rage, so it is brilliant that this year some genuinely decent alternative Christmas songs have been released. Moshi Moshi have released A Christmas Gift For You Ep , Target are [...]
NME Radar Compilation
For some years now, the NME Radar tour has been bringing much hyped, and occasionally a few tripe, bands to the masses. Now, it seems that the live outing is not simply enough to contain their top tips for the year and so for the first time, an album featuring 20 of the mag’s fave artists and tracks has been released. It’s a nice idea were it not for the fact that the NME, once a pinnacle of music journalism, acts mostly as a randomly oscillating hype chart tipping bands for the top [...]
