Pet Lions perform Tuesday, April 2, at Lincoln Hall Welcome to Weekly Diversions! This is our new weekly show calendar in which we preview our local show picks for Monday through Thursday. MONDAY PALMFLOWER This Pilsen duo sure know how to get weird. Comprised of guitarist Ray Borchers and drummer slash vocalist Stacy Goldschmidt, Palmflower plays a brand of twisted pop music (self-described on their Facebook [...]
As a tangential follow-up to the last post about a music video staring Ray Wise, here's my favorite recent discovery: Twin Peaks. They are a bunch of young guys making hazy rock like a humid blast of summer...something perfect for the dwindling days of winter. There are touches of Supergrass, Wavves and lot of noisy Chicago classics. "Stand In The Sand" definitely gives reason to keep an eye on these guys for more releases. Hell, they've already got an appearance under their belt on Chicago's venerable public access, indie kids dance party Chic-a-go-go. That's a [...]

Photo by Drew Reynolds Spring forth everyone! Hopefully this week's snow was the last big one we'll get before the warmth returns, and god knows we could use it. Anyway, don't forget to set your clocks forward an hour on Saturday after you stumble home from one of the many great shows going on this weekend. We're talking My Gold Mask's album release party at Schubas, The Hideout's Annual SXSW Send-Off , So Cow at the Burlington and more. Buckle up... [...]

In nine days the music, tech (or interactive), and film worlds will begin to congregate in Austin, Texas for the most important ‘conference’ on Earth these days, South By Southwest (SXSW). All of them will be traveling to Austin with the hope of shaking, rattling, and stirring up their industry by making their phantasms reality. And The Hideout, who annually throws a benefit concert to help artists pay their way, will once again be sending off some of Chicago's best talent with a SXSW - Send Off Party on Saturday, March 9th. [...]

We watched a ton of music videos from local acts this year. And we determined that music videos are cool, but cool music videos are cooler. So, in the great tradition of year-end listicles, we combed through the lot and have determined these 10 are a cut above the rest due to look, style and creativity. We probably missed a few, and if you think so, feel free to drop us a line in the comments. Onward... 10. SUMMER GIRLFRIENDS -- "Goth Beach [...]
Summer Girlfriends "Goth Beach Party" from Shockwaves released in June 2012 on Addenda Records .
Though it's cold out, this morning we head to the beach with the lovely ladies of Summer Girlfriends as we have he exclusive premiere of their new video for "Goth Beach Party." The clip finds the garage poppers decked out in bleak and drab colors partying in the sand. Ultimately, you'll see looks can be deceiving, but there's nothing tricky about the song's dirge-y opening and its bouncy refrain. If this video has you clamoring for more, check out Summer Girlfriends on Vocalo's The Music Vox tonight at 6 p.m. (listen at [...]

There's no better time to start thinking about summer than the day after the first snowfall, right? Well, begin your journey towards the the beach, sunshine and street fests tonight as Summer Girlfriends bring the heat with their delightful garage-pop antics. Their debut, Shockwaves , dropped earlier this year, and honestly, it's has rarely left my rotation since. Opener, "Pop Rocks," is pure sugary addiction with its jangly guitar assault, racing rhythms and fluffy hook (which I find coming back to more than I'd like to admit). But it [...]

Mission of Burma | Photo by Audrey Leon There's a boatload of stuff going on this weekend. But we only had time to share a few with you. Luckily, all these shows will undoubtedly rules. We're chatting up Summer Girlfriends at Township, Nones at The Empty Bottle, Mission Of Burma at Lincoln Hall and more. Dig it, y'all... FRIDAY SUMMER GIRLFRIENDS [...]

"Cutesy, over the top, blow your brains out rockabilly!" reads the about section of Pillow Talk's faceboook page . While I'm definitely sure it won't make me blow my brains out, Pillow Talk's brand of twee-pop meets rockabilly is absolutely sugary. But the Chicago trio aren't all candy and kisses - they actually do a fine job of recreating classic Nashvillian harmonies, which can be heard on their latest and only release so far, a three-track demo titled, Sweet Talk! . The demo's first cut, "Sweet Talk," swings [...]

It's Friday and it's time to party. This is another busy weekend what with Wicker Park Festival occupying much of Milwaukee Avenue from North to Paulina. So, let's get out there, Chicago, and experience some sunshine, and then quickly run back inside for some great shows by local rockers The Sky We Scrape , Summer Girlfriends , and Bike Cops . Up and ATOM! FRIDAY THE SKY WE SCRAPE [...]

Netherfriends | Photo by Drew Reynolds Welcome to the weekend, party people! If you're looking to avoid all the bustling and hustling of this week's round of neighborhood fests such as Green Music Fest in Wicker Park or Chicago Summerfest in Lincoln Park, look no further than our weekend picks. We're talking up The Hecks ( recently voted Best New Rock Duo by The Reader ) at the Empty Bottle, Geronimo! at Township, Netherfriends at The Whistler and more! Come on over [...]

What is a summer girlfriend? A summer girlfriend is a guy’s first love—she represents awkwardness, innocence, ephemerality and the inevitability of the passage of time. Similarly, Summer Girlfriends aspires to those themes (and successfully reach them) in their debut LP, Shockwaves . From “PG-13 Sex Scene” to “Pop Rocks,” the opening tracks buzz with the warm energy and life of summer, while vocalist Caitlin Kerr evokes the feelings of youthful vitality, nonchalance and what it really is to be [...]

Facebook Sometimes when you've never heard of a band and you see their name you immediately decide in your head how they should sound, that happened to me with Chicago five piece Summer Girlfriends and, to no great surprise, my initial reaction was right... Lead track "Shockwaves" introduces their sweet, lo fi, garage pop perfectly, oozing with syrupy harmonies and playful, summery melodies. Despite making me want to throw out the usual girl group nostalgic, catchy comments the girls manage to sound fresh and modern too, with seemingly random [...]
1. Summer Girlfriends - "Pop Rocks" (An Atlas and the Anchor exclusive premiere of the Chicago all-female punk-pop band's super-catchy single from their debut album Shockwaves out now on Addenda Records. They top their punk rock pizza with upbeat sunny melodies, kazoo solos, fat garage-born basslines and enough charm that you will want these girls to stay year round!) http://www.facebook.com/summer girlfriends Download: http://bylamplight.com/tmp/Sum mer_Girlfriends-Pop_Rocks.mp3 2. The Mynabirds [...]
In their new video for their breezy tune "Shockwaves," Summer Girlfriends have fun with food. Literally. The indie-pop quartet smash up raw meat, get awkward with fruit, sprayed by mustard and even commit the nefarious act of murder by popsicle. As odd as it may sound, somehow it all works together with the song's thick bass, glossy guitars and beach-fun vocals. Digging video? Then be sure to check out their Addenda Records self-titled debut LP, which drops on June 5 (our review is coming shortly). In the meantime, watch the foody fun [...]

Hollows first made waves in Chicago with their bopping, sometimes spooky garage rock that garnered comparison to The Shangri-Las and Ronnie Spector. Those comparisons were fair and fine seeing as their tunes had a proclivity to lean on classic girl group vibes (FWIW, the drummer is a dude). But their latest track "V Is For Vulture," from their new record Vulture , finds the band in a more reflective mood that even features a near chamber-pop bridge that's downright heavenly. Unlike some of their more poplar contemporaries, one thing that's undeniable about Hollows is that their [...]
coffin pricks In a world filled with dubstep DJs and party rock anthems, Chicago punks Coffin Pricks are standing tall under the banner of "unchill wave." Coffin Pricks take a page or two from bands like Mission of Burma and Husker Du by displaying speed and agility while maintaining a minimalist punk approach. Because of this, the lead track on the group's recent EP, "Group Home Haircut," isn't overly intimidating. There's enough melody and catchy guitar parts to compel listeners to dance while the back beats crackle at [...]
