by Andrew Sacher Sun Kil Moon & The Album Leaf Slowcore mastermind Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon) and ambient artist Jimmy LaVelle (The Album Leaf) teamed up for a collaborative album, Perils From The Sea , which came out on Mark's Caldo Verde Records last week (4/30). It's as beautiful a collaboration as it sounds like it would be, with Mark's descriptive lyrics taking their usual forefront, but this time over minimal beats and [...]
Those familiar with Sun Kil Moon and/or the Album Leaf could be forgiven for approaching the first official collaboration between Mark Kozelek and Jimmy LaValle , with a certain amount of knowing expectation. The coupling of Kozelek’s world-weary musings and LaValle’s moody electronica seems such a natural fit on paper it’s a wonder it hasn’t happened before. Kozelek is a notoriously prickly figure, his misery so heightened it occasionally reaches parody. LaValle is less obviously troubled, though throwing both together seems unlikely to elicit life-affirming anthems. And yet, Perils from the Sea [...]
As JIMMY LAVALLE, multi-instrumentalist and head of THE ALBUM LEAF named MARK KOZELEK's music to be one of his major influences on various occasions, he might not have thought about collaborating with the former singer of legendary slowcore-institution RED HOUSE PAINTERS. And to be honest, a certain amount of scepticism felt appropriate indeed, when Perils The post Sun Kil Moon & The Album Leaf - Perils From The Sea appeared first on Nothing But Hope And Passion - NBHAP - Music Magazine & more .

Mark Kozelek's new collection, Like Rats , finds the Sun Kil Moon frontman reimagining songs by a host of artists whom he's never before covered - Misfits, Godflesh, etc. - as well as a few whose work he's already put his stamp on. Among the latter group is '70s pop gods Yes, whose "Long Distance Runaround" was initially recorded as a somber acoustic lament for Red House Painters' 1995 LP, Ocean Beach (the song appeared only on the vinyl edition of the album); later, a robust electric version of that cover was included on the band's 1996 [...]
Mark Kozelek - Carry Me Ohio (Live At Mao Livehouse/Shanghai & Beijing)
Mark Kozelek's newest all-covers release may have some flaws, but the fact that it may be his darkest work yet isn't one of them.
Watch Mark Kozelek perform "Heron Blue" and "Sunshine In Chicago" at the Wilmot Church in Fredericton, NB as part of the Shivering Songs festival. Both songs are on his new LP: Live at Phoenix Public House Melbourne Pitchfork rated and review here
What can't Mark Kozelek do with a song? After more than 20 years fronting legendary sad sacks Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon , Kozelek, through his stripped-down, honest songwriting approach, has demonstrated an uncanny ability to cut straight through the bullshit and get at the core of what's real. But while Kozelek's original material has earned him a reputation as one of the most unflinching songwriters of his generation, his ability to unlock the sentimental riches in other people's work further cements his ability to find the heart of a song. Like [...]

Mark Kozelek has delivered a catalog's worth of unexpected covers - most famously dedicating entire albums to covers of Modest Mouse and Bon Scott-era AC/DC, respectively, but he's crafted trademark variations of everything from Wings to Genesis to Ace Frehley to Will Oldham to "Send In The Clowns" - so it's no surprise that his next release , Like Rats , will be a collection of covers of artists including Bad Brains, Sonny & Cher, and the Misfits. The title track is a cover of an amazing Godflesh song, from that band's 1989 classic Streetcleaner . Caldo [...]

Mark Kozelek ( Red House Painters , Sun Kil Moon ) stopped by Jimmy Fallon last night for his first television appearance. Best of all, he got a new backing bad: the Roots!!! He even dusted off "Mistress" for some sort of online-bonus song....... The post Sun Kil Moon on Fallon appeared first on Captains Dead .

For his first late night performance behind May's Among The Leaves , Mark Kozelek, aka Sun Kil Moon , appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and enlisted The Roots for a beautiful rendition of "The Moderately Talented Young Woman". Sun Kil Moon performed "The Moderately Talented Yet Attractive Young Woman Vs. the Exceptionally Talented Yet Not So Attractive Middle Aged Man" and "Mistress" (web only) on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Watch the videos below: ...

KRAMER : How can I possibly thank you? SOUP NAZI : You are the only one who understands me. KRAMER : You suffer for your soup. SOUP NAZI : Yes. That is right. KRAMER : You demand perfection from yourself, from your soup. SOUP NAZI : How can I tolerate any less from my customer? CUSTOMER : Uh, gazpacho, por favor. SOUP NAZI : Por favor? There is something haunting about Mark Kozelek on stage. No costume, makeup, crazy lights... even other instruments. It was simply a man and his guitar. Lincoln Hall may have been the perfect venue for this quiet series of ballads. Anything more personal would've been the man performing in your living room. His presence calls for small, intimate spaces. His songs need minds willing to go to darker places and that is where a chilly Monday evening found me, surrounded by the new generation of Blue Demons, Chicagoans, the college whatnots sipping white wine (or even better, a microbrews) waiting for a [...]

[Ed.note] This review runs live and first on Bowery's House List blog . There is also no video or imagery from this show by anyone, anywhere, which is, if you think about it, sort of amazing in 2012. Kozelek fans live in the moment. Mark Kozelek has already written this review. Without being overly meta, this is to say that he is both in on the joke and knows everything you might say or write about him. We all know this even without listening to his most [...]
Mark Kozelek sits on his stool, Spanish guitar in hand, like an old, ornery man might sit on his stoop, sneering at kids who pass by, and raising his fist at anything that blocks his view of a world he doesn’t want to see anyhow. He's a curmudgeon. He's funny, sure, but only because of the nasty, occasionally insensitive words he throws at his audience. He isn't happy to be anywhere, and he certainly isn't happy to sit before you, singing sad songs so that you can feel something. Once his fingertips knock against his nylon-stringed guitar, [...]
Date 9/21/12 Location Scottish Rite Theater Doors 8pm Tickets Sold Out? My apologies to the Mark Kozelek fans out there for the super late show post, but I'm sure you keep up with the guy and knew about this already. For those of you who were clueless like me, Kozelek has a planned solo show going down at the [...]
From the first moment I heard Red House Painters' Rollercoaster LP back in 1999, I became a lifelong Mark Kozelek fan. His unique voice and songwriting ability surpass even the most popular singer/songwriters around today. After 17 albums under Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon and his own name, he is one the few artists who have maintained a consistent level of quality releases throughout their career. Sun Kil Moon's newest release, Among The Leaves , is one of Kozelek's most stripped-down and lyrically compelling albums in [...]
