2000-luvun taitteessa hajonneen folk/alternative-yhtye Red House Paintersin sekä edelleen aktiivisen Sun Kil Moonin keulahahmona parhaiten tunnettua Mark Kozelekia pidetään Mark Leneganin ohella kaihomielisen vaihtoehtorockin mestarina. Artistin ensimmäinen soololevytys Rock’n’Roll Singer -ep julkaistiin vuonna 2000 ja sittemmin mieheltä on ilmestynyt valtaisa määrä pitkäsoittoja, singlejä, cover-levyjä ja kokoelmia. Kozelekin yli 20 vuotta kestäneen uran tavaramerkeiksi ovat muodostuneet vahvatunnelmaiset [...]
Whether you're a fan of Red House Painters/Mark Kozelek/Sun Kill Moon or a soon-to-be fan (yep, those are the only two choices), you've got to admit the guy possesses a special voice, so smooth it can melt the cheese over ... Continue reading

"A cynic is just a disappointed romantic. They want the world to be different, but know it isn't, can't, and will never be." -Some guy I used to talk to in the 902s Since about 1996, this is what I had always imagined Mark Kozelek to be. More than anything else, his brooding ways made him the misanthropic soulful white man of mystery to me. Teenage girls love that stuff; big girls do too. The perceived vulnerability, rejection, passion, and sad sweetness. The tortured artist (a little extreme, but not by much). Prolific songwriting. Talent [...]

markkozelek.com Who: Mark Kozelek What: Former Red House Painter , current Sun Kil Moon -er and all-around revered singer, songwriter, guitarist and curmudgeon Why: Sun Kil Moon released Admiral Fell Promises last year and while you'd expect that the band as a whole would tour in support, the Koz only ever seems to come to Canada solo. And that's when he even comes at all (or doesn't cancel) so we should take what we can get. [...]

One of the fundamental goals of running a music blog is to introduce people to new music. The primary method of doing this is to highlight new releases, either via up and coming bands that show potential or tried-and-true musical mainstays that generally please the masses. Lost in this growing blogging race are the building blocks that got us to where we are, the albums that sounded like the hot new thing before the hot new thing was even a thing. So, in an effort to spotlight some artists or albums that might not have hit Hype Machine lately, Listen [...]
This is another album that I've been meaning to post about for a while but just haven't gotten around to it. But now that I'm done being a forgetful bum you get to hear allllll about it. My friend Ryan introduced me to the now Portland resident Justin Ringle who goes by the moniker 'Horse [...]
Desertshore may be a new name, but at least one of the faces should be familiar. The band began as a side project for Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon guitarist Phil Carney and classically trained pianist Chris Connolly. After a few years of periodic collaboration and jamming, what finally emerged is Drifting Your Majesty , an aptly titled record with the sound you'd expect from the players involved. It is important to note that the record was produced by Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters mastermind Mark Kozelek, as his influence is spewed all over [...]

photo stolen from Facebook, taken by a guy named Daniel mak First-time listeners either love Mark Kozelek's hollow voice and pluck-and-strum guitar style or their ear takes in the mellow sounds and classical guitar as something lonesome that fades into the background and is better suited for a dinner party rather than a road-trip soundtrack or top ten play lists. But the ghostly troubadour’s die-hard fans would tell you that his mournful voice and simple guitar arrangement reminds [...]
So as I read through the Pitchfork's very admirable attempt at listing the top tracks of the 90s , I came across a song by Red House Painters called "Katy Song" that I hadn't thought about in a long time. I'm not totally sure why I haven't been spinning any RHP tracks as of late, but it might have something to do with it not being the best "summer music". So after listening to that epic track again from the band's second LP(also known as the Rollercoaster LP), I started delving back into some of [...]

Mark Kozelek never set out to be a folksinger. He was a moody alt-rocker in his early twenties, founding the band Red House Painters in 1989 in San Francisco as a vehicle for his intensely confessional songwriting. The group lasted several years, gaining some modicum of popularity in the mid nineties thanks to a prolific output on indie label 4AD, and for a while there, it looked like the singer-songwriter would spend his career fleshing out his lyrics and simple melodic tendencies within the full, slightly grungy production dynamic of the time, revealing a penchant [...]

Mark Kozelek aka. The Master of Everything Gorgeous raises the bar for M.J. cover-age with “I’ll Be There.”
As mentioned in the spring, Mark Kozelek’s latest Sun Kil Moon album, Admiral Fell Promises, comes bundled with I’ll Be There (if purchased directly from Caldo Verde Records ) , a limited-edition EP of mostly covers that includes renditions of songs by Stereolab, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, and a title track by the Jackson 5. Hearing Kozelek, who’s in his early 40s, sing this understated take on the lead vocal made famous by a then 12-year-old Michael Jackson [...]

Mark Kozelek’s ruminating music has a way of seeping into our unexciting lives every now and then, and I am just about content to spend most of my days plugged in to the unspoiled beauty of Red House Painters records, while watching the outside world drift by with the artful rhythms of a Jorge Luis Borges story. Admiral Fell Promises , Kozelek’s latest and fourth album under the auspices of his ongoing Sun Kil Moon project is a sparse acoustic affair characterized by his growing interest in classical guitar playing. The serenity and attentiveness to instrumental details [...]
In my recent review of Sun Kil Moon 's latest release, Admiral Fell Promises , I make the bold assertion that Mark Kozelek is not a happy person. Though I don't know the Ohioan on a personal level, judging from his haunting guitar balladry, I figured I had the guy pinned down as a mope. That's why it came as such a shock to me when the Music Hall of Williamsburg filled with uproarious laughter after each bit of Kozelek's between-song banter. For all his gorgeously dark strumming and full bodied crooning on ill-fated [...]

Much has already been made about the fact that Mark Kozelek is using a nylon-string guitar as his lone accompaniment on Admiral Fell Promises, his fourth album under the Sun Kil Moon moniker. But he dryly dismisses the importance of that fact through the opening lyrics on 'Ålesund,' the lead-off track on the album: “No, this is not my guitar, I’m bringing it to a friend." It's almost as if Kozelek is trying to distance himself from the intensely personal performances and vocals that colour the entirety of this [...]

It seems as though we at malleus&incus have a habit of avoiding posting on weekends. Whether that be a product of busyness or simply being lazy, I apologize on behalf of all of us and hope to correct the lack of posting in the near future. I wouldn't doubt that once classes start again in September, the opposite trend will be apparent - we'll be loading up on posts during the weekend and (hopefully) being productive during the week. However, I hope it is okay to assume that you're here for the music, not the apologies. This time [...]
