Filed under: News , Exclusive , Pop Culture , The Hit List , Music Appreciation , EDM Dimitrios Kambouris, Getty It's not just the gaming -- the hyper-jumping, mega-blaster shooting, sword-fighting or robot-crashing action -- that makes a great video game. The best video games also have rich characters you feel emotionally invested in, smart plotlines that keep your attention, and, in an area that's constantly underrated, great musical scores. [...]

For its latest ad campaign, ' Game On, World ’, Nike has placed its roster of athletes into a game of fake-Super Mario Bros. as a way to promote the Nike+ fitness tracking system. It's a short clip and a commercial, which I hate promoting, but it's a great spot. Obviously, Nike knew I wouldn't hesitate to post this up, even though I wish they had actually used Super Mario Bros. level one in the city and the invincibility music. [via designtaxi ]
Here's an updated, 3D interpretation of the opening level of everyone's favorite video game. It's weird seeing watching the opening level with HD sound effects and absent that infamous soundtrack. [via theaggregate ]
You might remember Mark Rober as the NASA rocket scientist (seriously, that's what he does for a living) behind the double iPad Halloween costume. He's also made a few other nifty videos (like this amazing gorilla footage one) using simple technology hacks to wondrous effect. His latest has him crafting a glowing Super Mario sculpture out of balloons.
The Doggfather himself, Snoop Dogg, dropped this gem remix of the 8 bit classic video game, Super Mario Bros. Check him on his Soundcloud . Those drums are MEAN.

Had to post this track. Snoop put it up on his soundcloud yesterday and it's too good to pass up, especially if you grew up playing NES like I did. He hasn't made the track available for download, but you can stream it below:

This randomly showed up on Snoop Dogg 's soundcloud and there is just no way we won't cover this. There is not a lot of information about the release of this track but Hip/Hop grand master Snoop Dogg takes back to memory lane with a sampling of one of the most recognized tune on the planet, the original Super Mario Bros. theme. With an added bassline and a couple verses from Sir Dogg, this 16-bit funky track just screams to be played. Enjoy! If you have more information about the origin of [...]

It had to happen sooner or later but the year 2012 has been giving out some interesting impact players, as well as some future-memorable and novelty high-ended tunes so far. In the month of April, yet another toastie has dropped onto our AN bread bins through the total-ambush of Dada Lifes’ ‘Kick Out The Epic Motherf**ker’ and the vintage Super Mario Brothers Theme. This one makes me laugh in all the right places ... Famished from his 12 hour session on his localised Nintendo gold plated suite and all but ready [...]
PBS has just launched a new web series called Idea Channel, which "examines the connections between pop culture, technology and art."
MariO is a free, fully playable and Portalized remake of the 1985 original. Which pretty much makes this the greatest video game every invented, right? [via waxy ]
Beware the hair carpet, it’s a Super Mario Bros portal into the apartments below! Then you’ll be trapped in a deserted parking garage full of multiplying Wookies! Or are they Tribbles? Iamamiwhoami has yet again created a fascinating and elegant music video, athletic and adventurous, this time significantly less disguised in comparison to her earlier videos. A face to a name, such a beautiful thang! I do miss her absurdly large fairy-eye-lashes, though…
Well, it was only a matter of time. In this music video parody of Lana Del Rey's "Video Games," Jenny Bede asks the question "what happens when a girl marries the wrong Mario brother?" Well, her life turns into a mindless stream of video games, that's what happens. Bede, as an extremely pouty Princess Peach stuck in an unhappy marriage to Luigi, sings mournfully to Mario: "didn't think I was good enough for you/ Always getting caught by random dudes/ Heard you dated Lara Croft/ Oh honey, is that true?" We didn't think anything would rival the excellent "Hunger Games" parody [...]

This March, Converse will release two different styles of its One Star low-top with a Super Mario Bros. theme in Japan. From High Snobiety : "It comes in a black and a white premium leather version, with the Converse star logo being replaced with the star icon from the iconic video game. Furthermore the colors of the sneaker have been adapted to the signature colors of the Super Mario character and the Super Mario Bros., Mario and Luigi, are printed on the heel of the sneakers." Kind of wish they came in canvas instead [...]

When you awoke this morning, do you remember talking in your sleep? i awoke at five am to the sound of current weather coming from the hibernation-free information channel on my television as a stumbled into the bathroom to ready myself for the day. I really was in the mood for a mild synthetic groove; so i quickly programmed a station in Pandora that would accommodate my limbo like state of mind. As i transitioned into a [...]
How awesome is this ? Using a Teagueduino and a few inputs and outputs, we put together a physical side-scrolling video game. To control it, there’s a knob on the side. As time advances the game gets faster and faster — can you avoid all the obstacles and make it to the end? Watch the second half of the video for an overview of how everything is hooked up. It was super easy to make using a bunch of things we had lying around. You’ll notice lots of lime green painters tape, popsicle sticks, [...]

Always was surprisingly enough, my introduction to the UK electro pop band Erasure . What? you say, what about A Little Respect or Chains of Love or Sometimes ? those tracks were chart topping dance floor popping doozies from the 80s. Well, my dear, I am a 90s child and Always was one of Erasure's most popular tracks. I remember liking it in junior high and thinking 'why am I liking this?' because I typically listened to rap or grunge or Can rock (read: Moist/IME/OLP) at that time. Here's why [...]
