I am so very late today as I was a sloth. It was 11 before I woke up. Two phone calls before nine woke me, but I settled back under the covers both times and went back to sleep. Fern nestled beside me on one side and Gracie on the other. They are both now napping. When I went to get the papers, I was astonished at how warm it was. It was 51°. I checked the weather in the paper as I had expected it to be cold, but that front isn't due until tomorrow. I know [...]
It's Friday the 13 and superstition says today is unlucky...dun dun dun! A Gallup poll conducted a few years ago found that about 25% of us are superstitious about knocking on wood, 13% about ... Continue reading "Musicians & Their Superstitions: Houston's Own Reveal Pre-show Rituals" >

Facebook / modernsuperstitions.com/ Modern Superstitions have previewed three tracks on their brand new website as a taste of their new record 'Sunbleached', head over and listen, they are quite excellent. I recognise all three tracks from their current batch of UK shows (of which I've seen two), which sees them move their punchy, energetic rock-pop to the next level, led by the resonance and strength of Nyssa Rosaleen's impeccable vocals the Toronto four piece are one of the exciting and enjoyable acts I've had the pleasure of seeing [...]

Rock In Rio got a very special treat when Stevie Wonder was joined on stage by the always amazing Janelle Monae for a rousing rendition of "Superstition." Check out the clip below and try to keep yourself from jumping up and dancing, wherever you are. (Via You Ain't No Picasso )
It was only two years ago that Janelle Monae impressed me when I caught her live. Big deal. She's spent that time impressing everyone from Of Montreal and Prince to to Bruno Mars and Stevie Wonder. Here she is with Stevie, performing "Superstition" in Rock in Rio.
I have a feeling that like most of you out there, the headliners for ACL aren't the real reason for going to the festival. At first glance, this year may be a bit weak, but even early walk-ins will find excellent acts like Cults, Telekinesis, The Head and the Heart, The Antlers, An Horse, and so on. The middle of the lineup is great with Cut Copy, Kurt Vile, Smith Westerns, The Moondoggies, TV on the Radio, The Walkmen, Broken Social Scene, Empire of the Sun - I could go on. The headliners are left with the [...]
Stevie Wonder: Chapter 20. The Stevie Wonder series ends with 20 of his number one hits.

Frank Yang I've been trying to do piggyback a write up of Sloan's latest The Double Cross on a live review all Summer but have been constantly foiled. For their album launch in-store at Sonic Boom back in May , a perfect storm of non-functional transit made a 10-minute trip take 45 and while I could hear the show, I couldn't see a damn thing. Then for their two-night stand at the Mod Club I was felled by a post-NXNE cold so those didn't happen. It certainly [...]

Gracie has been out all morning, a sure sign of a nice day, and she's right. The sun is shining and the sky is blue, a deep blue. It's a little chilly still but warmer than it's been. I've been out on the deck a couple of times just to survey the world and watch Gracie romp through the yard. When I was out, I noticed fill the bird feeders must be put on my to-do list. Today is Friday the 13th. I have never been superstitious so it's just another date for me, but I admit I [...]

by teepoo My first encounter with Modern Superstitions was when they opened at Sonic Boom this Sunday for Record Store Day 2011. They looked like pretty average people on stage but boy when Nyssa started to sing/belt, you could tell she had been performing for a while. She has that female rocker chic sorta vibe. Drummer Ben Reinhart also amused me with the fact he'd sometimes be hitting the drums with the maracas. Recently signed with Last Gang, they've released a pretty badass EP called All the [...]
A quick post as I'm somewhat hungover today, I just wanted to share my excitement about Modern Superstitions name appearing on the list of bands for The Great Escape, I can't find any more UK dates at the moment (other than an appearance at Above Audio on the 13th May as part of the festival), I think it's the bands first European trip and they will certainly be one my bands to see list, here is what I said about them back in January . See these videos for proof: [...]
