Zach Boyle may have helped bring two fine Portland bands—Super XX Man and A Weather—to prominence (there may be more, as this man works discreetly), but he refuses to quit there. With his Gold Halo Photograph project, Boyle stays in the same sleepy pop arena that the aforementioned bands often inhabit—but he's experimenting with unconventional orchestration and defining his own voice (we hear a bit of Elliott Smith and maybe a dab of Billy Corgan shining through) with the new project, as evidenced here by "Answers." The slide guitar bits and lo-fi synth drums give it a feel all its [...]
This past weekend, I spent way too much time plowing through NPR's 15-minute concert series aptly called Tiny Desk Concerts . They're brief nuggets of intimate musical gold, with a musician playing at NPR's music desk - often times nothing more an acoustic guitar and their voice. The one you should watch is of Super XX Man , aka Stephen Garred. The Portland songwriter is a megaphone of empathy - channeling the insecurities, doubts, hopes and swirling emotions of people into three-minutes of pure bliss. I know it's preposterous to claim he's the best songwriter working [...]

Super XX Man , pronounced "Super Double X Man," is bringing the Portland folk scene to it's knees. His less than ambient yet less than standard folky vibes bring a surprisingly different view to the expected one man, one guitar (with the occasional tambourine or ukulele) that has become so common in the underworld of the overtly acoustic, and financially challenged City of Roses. There'll Be Diamonds may be a senior release for Double X, but he still manages to sound fresh as ever on tracks like "Psychotic Breakdown" [...]

Well, better late than never. My life's been turned on its head the last few months (and not necessarily, entirely, or permanently in a bad way), but it's meant that I've been doing fewer new shows, and sometimes taking a while to post them. I'm posting this one from a few weeks ago now, and will have another brand new one up in a couple of days. Also, I'll be doing my Christmas Special next week! Good times. artist - song - album :: extra info A.C. Newman - [...]

No, not Christmas. Christmas can bite me. I'm talking about the time for end-of-year Top 10 lists. I love a good top 10 list and have always wanted a venue on which to present one. When I was thinking of starting a blog, and this is true, one of the things that motivated me to get it together was that I would finally be able to put together a list of my 10 favorite albums of the year . Just like the magazines. Except nobody cares about mine. Bit of a twist this year. Because of my [...]

There is a pleasant sway to the sounds of Super XX Man's new album Volume XII: There'll Be Diamonds . Opening with the fast paced walk of "Medication," going on with frank glee about having "taken too many medications I don't know...," leading to the feedback laced calmness of "Psychotic Break," then running fairly smooth until the end. Scott Garred is Super XX Man, and he is joined by his wife Michelle on accordion, singer Ali Wesley, Kelly Dachtler and Josh Woods (who trade off guitar and bass duties) and drummer Bob Ham. audio: [...]

A freezing British Sunday, the perfect time to catch up with my weekly read of all things retro and hip. Without sounding like a blatant plug for Modculture Media, go there, have a walk around one of their Websites or Blogs, maybe stretch your legs abit.We are a little embarrassed in how our lazy attitude to posting is made to look compared to the wondrous peak of perfecto they are regularly reaching. Crisp design and cool information can be appreciated in all these listed places ... Electric Roulette ... Modculture ... Retro To Go [...]
Lowfish , a.k.a. Toronto's Gregory De Rocher is one of my favorite electronic producers and I was very pleased to get word of his lastest album frozen&broken . He style is clear, crisp, and beautifully retro. With six albums and a stack of singles behind him, 2008 see's Lowfish aggressively pushing his sound forward. He's been hard at work distilling his pristine electro and throbbing analog buzz into a new techno variant. The playfulness of yesteryear is somewhere deep in the background with the fine detail of machinery and staccato bass lines taking the fore. The result is frozen&broken [...]

In most contexts, when XXX appears in a title, unless your locked in a dark room by yourself, you'd probably be a bit hesitant to click the link. However, when it comes to Consequence of Sound's Friday Mixtape, XXX just refers to the edition, and a good one at that. Below you'll find a mix of the best new singles and remixes along with a few songs from some up-and-comers you might just want to check out. If that's not enough for you and/or you're still looking to celebrate Tuesday's outcome, we recommend checking out Low Life Inc.'s [...]

Be forewarned, I'm a little pissed off today. So much so, in fact, that my hatred of the Florida Gators is going to have to sit the bench for a bit. In the past week or so, the music blogging community has been thrown into a state of confusion and fear by a burst of heavy handed enforcement of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act by Google, Blogger and Wordpress at the behest of the Big 4 Record Companies . This enforcement has manifested itself as the deletion of a number of posts that contain or [...]
One Weekly Gun has launched a new webpage . MP3 Hugger who's behind Indiecater has begun searching for artists, who wants to be on a Christmas compilation. Found in a Myspace bulletin, so no link I'm afraid. This is definitely something to be looking forward to. Lots of MP3 bloggers are currently having a real rough time with blogger , who has been taking down posts without warning. So far none of my posts have been removed, [...]
