BIRD BAND LOSES GUITAR PLAYER, GETS NEW ONE FROM ANOTHER BIRD BAND

Yesterday Axl sent me like twenty emails asking me to write something about this chick guitar player named Lauren Shredder-LeBlanc (when I did a Google image search the best picture of her that came up was the one above but I don't know if her wedding has anything to do with the rest of this [...]

Daily Diversion – The Swan King at the Empty Bottle

Daily Diversion – The Swan King at the Empty Bottle And now three reasons to shimmy on over to the Empty Bottle this evening... 1. Heavy and fast is the mantra The Swan King live by. This Chicago trio, that featuees members of Asschapel and Planes Mistaken For Stars, prowess is certainly impressive as they toss off throaty yells and punchy stoner metal riffs in bunches. But they don't veer off into the hazy, but rather careen off at a red bull-powered pace, which keeps their tunes flowing. LISTEN: "Staring Through Skulls" [...]

BATILLUS BATOURUS

photo by Scott Irvine Admittedly, I am not the resident doom expert at MetalSucks, but for my money, the genre is not having a terrific year. To wit: I have heard two doom releases which really knocked my beard off: Rwake's Rest, and Batillus' Furnace (my review here). I've spoken plenty about the former in the past [...]

Weekend Diversions

Weekend Diversions It has come to my attention that this is our 100th Weekend Diversion. What can I say? We just love searching high and low for all the best shows this damn fine city has to offer. And, boy, does it ever offer. We've got another packed weekend ahead of us with Seafarer and House of Normandie each headlining one night of two back-to-back shows sponsored by ourselves and Betta Promotions at Lincoln Hall and Schubas. This weekend also marks the very welcomed return of HoZac Record 's Blackout Fest going down this [...]

That Avalon Swank

That Avalon Swank Swanky Tunes have seen some nice coverage on our site as of late, but their new track definitely steps things up a notch. Avalon sports a groovy flare and energy that is sure to make this a big success at large outdoor festivals and indoor arenas alike. These guys just nail the drop, especially with the massive tribal drums, and the overall the combination of these elements with a polished use of side-chained synths give this track a very full sound. Full of awesome. Also dropping in another fresh remix of Hard Rock [...]

SEVENTH RULE GOT FREE ALBUMS FOR YOU ON BANDCAMP

Thinking about torrenting Millions' Gather Scatter or Wetnurse's Invisible City? Their label, Chicago's Seventh Rule Recordings (who recently signed our boys Batillus), has a better alternative for you. They've set up a Bandcamp page (which is like Myspace minus shitty web design, Rupert Murdoch's grubby fingerprints, and a merry-go-round of pedos) featuring selected releases from the labels,

Denver's Planes Mistaken For Stars broke up. In 2007. Originally from Peoria, Illinois, the once post-hardcore band kind of went on both a musical and geographical journey over their 11 year run. Musically, they kind of did whatever they wanted from album to album. Geographically, they up and mass migrated to [...]
