Swansea Recreation Centre - First Time European (Video)

swansea recreation centre - first time european
Swansea Recreation Centre - First Time European (Video) I tried to get to the bottom of why I love Swansea Recreation Centre in my post on the band last month . I also promised to bring you their new video for 'First Time European' when I found it. Here I proclaim, is the best song and video you'll find in a long time; a desolate blend of grainy video footage cut and pasted from independent films 'F For Fake' by Orson Welles and Stranger Than Paradise by Jim Jarmusch. Watching the video leaves me even [...]

Submarine by Joe Dunthorne (Random House 2008)

Submarine by Joe Dunthorne (Random House 2008) "Ah ha," Chips says, finding a page upon which he cameos. He adopts a whiny voice that is a bad impression of Zoe: "Jean who works breakfasts understands. She says that I am very mature for my age. She says that she has had a fluctuating waistline all her life and it's never done her any harm. She says that kids can be cruel. I told her I felt like crying in Geography when Chips said: 'I bet you eat your dinner off a tectonic plate.'" Chips looks up. "I forgot I said that."

Swansea Recreation Centre - First Time European

Swansea Recreation Centre - First Time European Swansea Recreation Centre - First Time European First Time European, from Swansea Recreation Centre's new EP 'hi tom / hey tom blood' is quite unlike the vast majority of music I've come across of late. It appears to draw some sort of influence from the intelligent, awkward British synth-pop of the underground 1980s, contemporary electronica, also perhaps from the post-Animal Collective scene of urban psychedelia which sprouted up around the time of Merriweather Post Pavilion. There's maybe even an element of Tunng in there too. To name some specific bands, I'm hearing the dense [...]

The Pooh Sticks // 03/09/11 // Globe, Cardiff

The Pooh Sticks // 03/09/11 // Globe, Cardiff This is Swansea band The Pooh Sticks' last ever show in Wales. Probably. Buoyed by a successful comeback after 15 years at last year's Indie Tracks, the band have decided to give gigging another go for a limited time only. It's clear, from this packed r... Read more..

painting bus stops

The story behind this band follows the pattern of many others. They met at university. They all realised they had different musical talents. They decided to form a band. During my time at university I came across many boys who thought they could become rock stars and grabbed people who wer... Read more..

Ash / October and November 2009 UK Tour

Ash are re-inventing themselves as one of the most innovative indie bands out there. They've ditched the old format of doing albums, and are releasing their "A-Z Series", a collection of 26 limited edition 7" and digital download singles, released fortnightly over the coming year. To celebrate, they're playing an "A-Z tour", playing 26 lesser-known venues around the country from Aldershot to Zennor. The indie kids have been around for over 17 years, their "Intergalactic Sonic 73s" compilation being my introduction to proper good music, with "Girl from Mars" still one of my favourite tracks [...]

The King Blues / April and May 2009 UK Tour

The King Blues / April and May 2009 UK Tour The King Blues have announced a tour for April and May around the UK's Student orientated venues. Hailed as "The most exciting live band in Britain." by Kerrang, but when it comes to describing their music The King Blues are a hard to pigeonhole semi-acoustic punk/rap outfit who sound like the Pogues one minute, the Streets the next, or like one of those US pop-punk bands who emerged in the wake of Green Day. Then again, sometimes they might sound like a skiffle band or a ska band, at others like an agit-prop electro-rock act [...]

Electric Six / March 2009 UK Tour

Electric Six / March 2009 UK Tour Remember Electric Six ? The stars of "Gay Bar", "High Voltage" and other such great hits? Well, turns out they're actually quite good, and have announced a UK tour for March in support of their new album, Flashy . Calling the tour "Hittin' The Walls and Workin' The Middle", support on all dates will come from Tragedy , a Bee Gees metal tribute band. Yes, you read that right. Sounds like a good night out to me! Tickets for all dates are on sale now. [...]
