Devon Williams brought his Euphoria tour to the Comet Tavern last night. His new album (his second) just out on Slumberland is full of intricate and lushly textured songs. The guy obviously is a student of the 802s. Euphoria is an understated winner that I recommend heartily to fans of the Church, Modern English, East River Pipe and the Icicle Works . It's an easy record to like combining Williams' big sounding songs with his plaintive delivery that strips them of any pretentiousness. As I was standing in the somewhat redesigned Comet [...]

Wednesday night I was a little bit more than giddy to finally get to see Aussie five-piece Boy and Bear play to a fairly packed room at Brooklyn's Knitting Factory. I've been hardcore crushing on their EP With Emperor Antartica for months now, but had missed their last US jaunt and was bummed about it to say the least. But finally everything came together, and they definitely did NOT disappoint. If you're a fan of bands like Local Natives and boys who rock jorts and cute accents to boot, Boy & Bear are more than just a little [...]

"Surgeon" is our first look into the highly anticipated new album Strange Mercy from indie darling St. Vincent. The track couldn't be more appropriate for a lazy week's end- filled with hazy synths, warm strings, and Annie Clark's honey-dipped vocals. In typical St. Vincent fashion, the song really comes alive when you take a second look at all of the intricacies beneath its easy-to-love surface. The choppy chorus guitars lend a nice break from the free-floating verses, all of which culminate into quite the epic 802s synth jam. Get groovy and have a great Sunday! [...]

Evrika combine some croony balladry with glitchy house segways and a hint of Laurel Halo'd dense electronics flitting in and out of the mix. Some tracks have a penchant for really feeling it, in which hearts are sung-out and never hiding far from the top of the sound pile. Not for everyone, but probably for most. Check more of their fine work over at their Soundcloud. Via.

Ta-da. All round wonderful person/music maker Bright Light Bright Light just put up the video for his forthcoming single 'Disco Moment'. If we're not mistaken a video of this quality makes him a fully fledged pop star. Correct? As with all things we love to bits we have studied this closely and feel compelled to be obtuse about it. Here are our favourite (disco) moments: A cat on the windowsill distracts Bright Light Bright Light, whilst everyone else [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Matthew C.X. Langford In what would be one of the odder visuals at this year's NXNE , F---ed Up 's Damian Abraham -- known to open cans of beer on his noggin and as hardcore as they come -- stood offstage watching Madeline Follin, the demure and diminutive singer of buzz act Cults . Yes, Cults are definitely having that [...]

"It's been a pretty steep learning curve," Minnie Cho of Swoon says. Cho certainly jumped into the deep end first with her musical career. "The crazy thing is that our producer discovered us before our first show, and it all happened within two years! I had barely assembled the band at that point. I could hardly play and sing at the same time!" Regardless of figuring this sort of thing out, Cho and her band Swoon have had little to no trouble adapting to the modern world of rocking out. The learning curve may have been steep, but [...]

Mjolnir are a disco-funk trio from Indonesia, yes Indonesia, to be precise Jakarta, this is definetly the most exotic country that has been featured on HBF - the thought of people in Indonesia reading our silly little blog makes us feel all warm inside. They cited Italo and disco as their influences - we can also spy that they like analog vintage synths, their 'Just a boy remix' sounds a lot like Rex The Dog - if someone had played it to us, we'd would have called it Rex, just something about the drums. It's only a demo, [...]

Mjolnir ( umm.. no idea how to pronounce that ) are an Electrodisco Funk Trio whose influences include the likes of MGMT, New Order, Empire of The Sun and Depeche Mode. They've done a remix/bootleg of The Chemical Brothers "Swoon" and when you listen to it you'll certainly hear the New Order influence. Lovely stuff. "In this summer's comedy Our Idiot Brother , there is a hot lesbian make-out scene between Rashida Jones and Zooey Deschanel. This is very likely to be the only fact you will remember from this article." - I'm pretty sure there is now a God and he listens to my prayers at night. Or at least the ones when I'm bored at my computer alone. [via GQ ]
If you didn't think Darren Criss look more dreamy than when he's wearing his Dalton Academy uniform, GQ invites you to think again. I take advantage of the fact that I'm the only female Top 5 contributor, and I like to add my lady perspective to the male dominated ATH crew. What better way to lend my girly advice to you boys out there looking to win over the ladies with a musical selection. Ladies, you will probably just agree and be awaiting a mixtape with the following tracks on your playlist. So here are a handful of love songs for all you indie-romantics. [...]

Today sees the local release of Samantha Savage Smith's "Tough Cookie", and I think this is one of the most anticipated local albums in a long while. I think this statement can't be more true after a few listens (I admittedly have only listen 3 or 4 times) - the album travels generations and genres in the span of 49 minutes. While many around the world are highly anticipating Calgary albums from artists like Chad VanGaalen and Women, they are going to need to start to share the world stage soon. The album "Tough Cookie" has been in [...]
