Something about SXSW that some indie bands and bloggers have complained about: the festival will draw several better-known, high-profile acts that inevitably pull punters away from the smaller shows. To me, this is somewhat of a hollow complaint: people who are drawn to those shows probably wouldnât be that adventurous enough to go see the truly unknown and unsung heroes. For the entire 5-day period of the fest, I didnât once set foot at the giant Auditorium Shores outdoor amphitheatre that hosted the Shins , Counting Crows or [...]
![[SXSW] â 1,2,3](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4158057_lg.jpg)
My first experience of SXSW was an interesting one, with its high points and low points, though I imagine everyone's is. One band we've written about in large quantities is Pittsburgh's 1,2,3 and having never seen them live before I knew that it would have to happen at SXSW , I just didn't know that I'd end up seeing them three times in three days in three completely different settings. First up was their night show at The Stage On Sixth , a wide and spacious bar located [...]

Friday - Day 3 Highlights â Two Cow Garageâs blazing, spastic take on punk rock heartland Springsteenblew out the cobwebs from the previous night â free beer did not in any wayhinder our enjoyment of this performance. J Roddy Walston & the Business barrelhouse set at South by San Josethrilled the near capacity crowdâ this is a real piano led southern rock androll band that owes as much to Little [...]
A lot of sh*t went down in Austin last weekend, and Canadian personality Nardwuar, "the Human Serviette," found himself right in the middle of it all. This year the wacky, [...]
I've never been the biggest Titus Andronicus fan, but they do put on a good live show. They started things off by saying everyone in the audience was just there to hear Jesus and Mary Chain's noise. They made the amps feed back a bit and lead singer Patrick Stickles said "You like this, don't [...]

Love, love, love this song, and even more after hearing this sweet acoustic version performed for Kick, Kick, Snare at southby this past week

With my previous music festival experiences, time proved to be my greatest enemy. At SXSW this year, I found a new foe: distance. While Iâm a native Washingtonian and our town ranks in the top 10 of most walkable American cities, even I was flagging after day 2 in Austin. When youâre subsisting on less than 4 hours of sleep per night, dehydrated and hungry, all signs point to you not crossing the road to meet Adam (Duritz of Counting Crows , whose name was on a sign I spotted [...]
The Arkells were one of the groups of SXSW that surprised me in a positive way. I had no idea who they were (in my notes they're listed as "Band #33 of the evening) and had to look them up once I got home to find out their name. But they used that to their [...]

Sometimes, even in the competitive world of music blogging, an editor needs to take time out for herself. One of the SXSW showcases I was most looking forward to hunkering myself down at was the Northern Irish showcase being put on at the Tap Room at Six on Wednesday night. Oddly, the line-up was pretty much the same at British Music Embassyâs Monday night show at Latitude 30, so had I arrived a day earlier, I could have caught that bill instead, but I suppose it was just my good luck [...]

Listen to Bear In Heaven 's new album "I Love You, It's Cool" below. When I saw Bear In Heaven at SXSW a couple of weeks ago I was slightly disappointed when they came out onstage and proclaimed to the 150 or so people that they'd only be playing tracks from their new album. Having never seen them live before I was hoping they'd throw in some tunes from their stunning second album "Beast Rest Forth Mouth" from 2010, but it turned [...]
Night Beats were a goofy, but good live act from the very start. When they were soundchecking, their bassist said "if you could make [my vocal microphone] sound like it's underneath the Pacific Ocean, that'd be tight." Funny that I made note of that since he basically was their show from then on out. He [...]

To sum up the SXSW experience â we saw 50 performances over4 days and that wasnât nearly enough. By breaking the SXSW cardinal rule, westill (if only slightly) fretted because we still didnât get to see another 50â those we missed included Alejandro Escovedo, Amanda Shires, AmericanAquarium, Archie Powell & The Exports, Beaver Nelson, Billy Joe Shaver, Brendan Benson, Buxton, Cloud Nothings, Cuff the Duke, David Mayfield Parade, DeltaSpirit, Dum Dum Girls, Ed Sheeran, Erik & The Happy Thoughts, Frank Turner, Free Energy, fun., Girls, [...]
After Pallbearer marched its audience toward a giant, gaping abyss at ND, I hustled a couple blocks west to Dirty Dog Bar. I learned an important lesson last year: If you don?t have a badge or wrist band, show up early to ensure you get into the venue. Last year, I showed up a band or two into the Metal Alliance show and missed Saint Vitus and Crow... Read More/Discuss on Metal Underground.com
