Math the Band is comprised of boyfriend & girlfriend duo Kevin Steinhauser and Justine Mainville. Together the two make electronic music mash-ups with the help of sampled Casio sk1 drums, pure square waves and BPMs. The duo recently released their full-length album Don't Worry via Slanty Shanty records. (I love the album cover) Math the Band is a big ball of energy that seemingly takes a more whimsical approach to music than most, and their single ‘Why Didn't You Get a Haircut’ only adds more validity to this theory. After releasing his second full-length album Sparklace in 2008, Cale Parks, the drummer for Aloha and White Williams, is back with a new EP titled ‘To Swift Mars’. The album was recorded at Inner Ear studios by fellow Aloha member T.J. Lipple and mixed by Brian Jacobs of Apes and Androids. It is not too often that a drummer transitions into a percussion soloist, so his music might be a hard concept to grasp but I have heard that his live show is something worth seeing. ‘To Swift Mars’ is set for an August 4th release via [...]

Washington band Desolation Wilderness started in 2005 as a solo project for Nicolas Zwart. He recorded his first album, ‘White Light Strobing’ in 2008, and while Zwart performed most of the material himself (singing, guitar, vibraphone and synth), it was the help of some friends that brought the album to fruition. Destination Wilderness now consists of Andrew Dorsett, Ben Kapp, Shelby Turner and Zwart. The band recently recorded two new songs, as a 7” single titled ‘No Tomorrow’. This 7’’ serves as an introduction to their forthcoming full-length album ‘New Universe’, [...]

Jeff McIlwain has been producing his abstract electronic music as Lusine for 10 years now. The Seattle dwelling artist has steadily released his music via Ghostly International over the years while also contributing tracks to various compilations and remixes on Mute, !K7, Kompakt, Asthmatic Kitty, and Hymen. McIlwain has also been involved in a couple of film projects, such as co-scoring David Gordon Green’s 2008 film 'Snow Angels' and scoring Kevin Bray’s 2009 film 'Linewatch'. McIlwain’s much-anticipated latest album, 'A Certain Distance', will be released on Ghostly International in 2009. Lusine’s latest [...]

The Fiery Furnaces is an experimental rock group based out of Brooklyn, NY that consists of brother and sister Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger, as well as Jason Loewenstein and Robert D'Amico. Since their initial album release, they continued on to release new music each year, and they currently have some fresh tunes in the cue. ‘The End Is Near’ single [...]

London based four-piece Hatcham Social is composed of brothers Tobias and Finnigan Kidd (Finnigan is the former Klaxons drummer and sometime member of The Chavs), bassist David Javu, and guitarist/keyboardist Jerome Watson. Cold Cave is an electronic music project led by its sole member Wesley Eisold (formerly of Some Girls, Give Up the Ghost, and XO Skeletons) and currently of Ye Olde Maids. Cold Cave recently released a three track 123 titled 'Etsel And Ruby' via What's Your Rupture records, and I am really diggin the single 'Love Comes Close'. Apparently a full-length album is in the works as well. Take A Listen: Love Comes Close by Cold Cave Download: Love Comes Close (Right click [...]

Busdriver , whose birth name is Regan Farquhar, is an underground MC hailing from Los Angeles. He is known for his rapid-fire, jazzy, free-association style of hip-hop. And in 2003 Busdriver collaborated with fellow underground musicians Radioinactive and Daedelus to create the LP, 'The Weather'. Scotland has steadily been revealing itself to be the home of many superb bands, so I am always excited to come across new music from that region. Copy Haho is from a small town near Aberdeen called Stonehaven, which is apparently the birthplace of the fountain pen. The band, who has been compared to the likes of Pavement and The Buzzcocks, is comprised of Joe Hearty (Guitar/Vox), Rikki Will (Drums), Stuart Mcintosh (Guitar), Richard Scott (Bass). Since forming in 2005 Copy Haho has released two limited 7” singles ‘Bookshelf’ and ‘You Are My Coal [...]

It is highly likely that even if you are not familiar with Yo La Tengo's music, their name still rings a bell. That's probably because the New Jersey natives have been around since the early 80's and have released over ten albums. The band is getting ready to release their next album, 'Popular Songs' via Matador Records. The album was recorded earlier this year with Roger Mountenot, in Hoboken and Nashville. Take A Listen: Periodically Double Or Triple by Yo La Tengo Download: Periodically Double Or [...]

UK artist Mr. Hudson , of Mr Hudson and The Library, has been working with Mr. Kanye West on his latest album 'Straight No Chaser', which is due out on August 3rd. Kanye not only co-produced the album but he also lent his mechanical vocals to the track, 'Supernova'. Even though I thought to myself, "is this Cher", during the initial tinny cries, and the repetitive backbone of this song will eventually leave a sour taste in my mouth (that's what she said), I actually kind of like it. 'Supernova' is pop song that has [...]

Toronto-based Little Girls recently released their latest EP, ‘Tambourine’ via Paper Bag Digital. Their songs combine lo-fi distorted surf rock with barely there vocals. Little Girls will release two more EPs before the end of this year. Little Girls started earlier this year when Josh McIntyre, who is a member of the shoe-gaze duo Pirate/Rock, recorded a few songs in his home studio as a side project. Seeking the unbiased opinions from friends and musical peers he anonymously posted the music on the internet under the name "Little Girls," a name [...]

'Face Control' is the second album from Montreal’s Handsome Furs , which is music outfit comprised of husband and wifey Alexei Perry and Dan Boeckner. The album was recorded and mixed by Arlen Thompson at Mount Zoomer, while Perry and Boeckner penned the tracks together. For those of you thinking the name Dan Boeckner rings a bell, perhaps it's because he is a busy man in the music world and is also a member of the delightful band, Wolf Parade (he was also a part of the former band, Atlas Strategic). [...]

Providence, Rhode Island’s Paul Francis, aka. Sage Francis is adding another installment into his ‘Sick Of’ collection that he started back in 2000. Micachu , the 21-year-old songwriter/producer, Mica Levi and her fellow band members Raisa Khan (keyboards) and Marc Pell (drums), got some rave reviews out of SXSW this year. Their debut album ‘Jewellery’ was released a couple months ago via Rough Trade records and has been leaving muddy little footprints all over the inter-webs lately. The Cave Singers are Seattle folk trio Pete Quirk (vocals, guitar, melodica, harmonia), Derek Fudesco (guitar, bass pedals) and Marty Lund (drums, guitar). It has been a long time in the making but it finally happened, I got to see The National live in concert. I was kind of bummed I didn’t grab a photo pass, but, I figured it gave me more time to just sit back, relax and enjoy one of my favorite bands. The show was at the Tabernacle in Atlanta…a historical venue with plenty of charm and character. I must admit that I was rather perplexed when I saw that the opener was Colin Stetson [...]
