"Dad Rock" started as a snarky label that music snobs & critics lobbed at aging classic rock-influenced bands like Wilco and The National . Maybe because it's Fathers' Day weekend or because I will be a new dad next month (if due dates hold true), but I'm joining Jeff Tweedy in embracing the once-derogatory term. So here's a mix of some modern dad rock, all from the last three years and all of which I happen to love. Download the entire mix here . [...]

Jesse Woods was a star wide receiver for Texas A&M before four surgeries brought him out of the game and into making music, a detour he says many of his former coaches and teammates, while supportive, don't necessarily "get". Ever since Jimmy introduced me to Woods's music, a comfortable place of rest between Fleet Foxes and The Tallest Man On Earth, ever since I heard the refrain "I'll be waiting in Northern California for ya" , I've been hooked on his saintly dreamfolk tinged with regret like an early morning beneath warm covers. We had some hot, muggy weeks here in New York. But finally, at long last, that magical chill of fall is in the air. Something about this particular change of season will forever remind me of the always-present anticipation of being a kid; the leaves change, the school year starts, and for whatever reason it feels like absolutely anything is possible. In my grown-up life, my feelings about fall are a little quieter. I relish in sweater-and-boots weather, love being able to pile on extra blankets, and nearly drown myself in hot cups of good tea. But it's [...]

All Photographs by Jan Kucic-Riker Primavera Sound is an overwhelming and vastly stimulating music pilgrimage made each year to Barcelona, Spain. Over two hundred bands across eleven stages and timetables that schedule sets well past five in the morning make the musical mecca a monstrous undertaking. Fortunately, 140,000 music lovers joined me over the course of the three main days and two satellite events to dance, sing, and even swim at the Parc del Fòrum and Poble Espanyol. The eclectic line-up saw everything from unabashed hip-hop to captivating folk ballads and electronic DJ sets. Though the scheduling [...]

PS11 | środa | czwartek | piątek | sobota | niedziela | THE TALLEST MAN ON EARTH (San Miguel) Do ostatniej chwili zastanawialiśmy się czy wybrać Cale’a grającego „Paris 1919” czy Mattsona grającego swoje.

Bon Iver came onto the scene in 2008 with a whisper — their album For Emma, Forever Ago was replete with spare, haunting songs that chilled the blood and produced goosebumps. It was magnificent. So the news that Justin Vernon's band [...]

The Cave Singers dropped their third release last month, No Witch . Starting off with their hallmark feel-good, folksy sound, frontman Pete Quirk’s sandy voice floats about "Gifts and the Raft" with slow guitar melodies and harmonizing vocals. Quickly, the album takes a turn to a [...]
“Be Sincere.” That’s it really, in a nutshell, distilled to its very essence. That is our simple entreaty, something held more vital than a manifesto, but not quite dogma. It a sense, there’s not much to it, or at least not much concrete. There’s something about it, though, something compelling. Sincerity is one of those lovely little ideas both ultimately mutable and utterly inarguable. One can be sincere about almost anything, yet once you are, it is a statement of ultimate purpose and conviction. It’s a form of truth. I’ll admit, the [...]

Click image to download full album Sounds like: Bob Dylan, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes "The Tallest Man on Earth - Little River" What's so good? If you’re like me, you haven’t heard much exciting folk music in the last few years. Despite the recent emergence of songwriters like Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Robin Pecknold (Fleet Foxes), it often seems like a mere handful of contemporary artists truly display the same amount of earthiness and [...]

Click image to download full album Sounds like: Devendra Banhart, The Boy Least Likely To, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros "Alex Ebert - Truth" What's so good? Let's pretend that Alex Ebert (of Edward Sharpe fame) decided to make an album combining elements of folk with childlike whimsy, using hand clapping, clarinet blowing, and whistling to create some awesome toe-tappin' jams. Oh, wait. We don't have to pretend. That album is real, and it's coming [...]
[There's always one guy who has to do it his own way. For us that's Erik. Fortunately, he does it so well. It is Independence Day after all. - Rube] By Erik Stefan Wow. It’s hard to believe we’re half way through 2010. There’s been a ridiculous amount of great music released in 2010 so [...]
