Here at MM we share, chat, argue, bury and praise music on a pretty regular basis…like daily. So throughout the year, the Mackerel crew (Mrs Mackerel, Barry-Sean, Christy-Popper, Dr Roddy, Polly Pocket, Starbar, MM and others) keep their own ever-changing top tens ready for publication at the climax of the festive season. So last, but very much not least, is the lovely (though flu-stricken) Mrs Mackerel and her choices for 2010. We all sweat a little over our top tens and I don’t know why really. This is just what I think, you will undoubtedly think [...]

Fifth in line is the indomitable lion of Hixet Wood...Mr Christy-Popper. 10. Local Natives – Airplanes ( Download here, Daytrotter Session ) The first big tune of the year for me, I sort of rediscovered this while compiling my top ten. [...]

End of year lists are great, I hate writing them and I'm still trying to figure out how im going to set mine out, but after reading some others I've found some brilliant albums to listen to. One of them being this one. The Tallest Man on Earth is one man from Sweden who, with his guitar (bar the last song), creates that perfect atmosphere of intimacy and expansiveness. His voice is distinctive and loud, a good loud that compliments his emotional songs perfectly. I have a feeling that this record will help tide me over until Gregory Alan Isakov [...]

If there is one artist who I’ve been meaning to write about for quite some time, it’s The Tallest Man on Earth. Commonly compared to Bob Dylan as a result of his raw vocals and poetic lyrics, Kristian Matsson, the man behind The Tallest Man On Earth is one of my favorite artists of the year. Despite being blogged and reviewed time and time again, there is little information on this talented Swed who would like nothing more than to be to be King of Spain. That’s right, the King of Spain, and you’ll want to [...]

Now is the time to reveal all... Our third contribution this year comes from the mighty Dr Roddy, house-mate, chef, Leeds fan, and occasional soiler of his own trousers. 10. So after much deliberation, head scratching, discussion, and more head scratching, we have MM’s favourite albums of 2010. And we choose our words very carefully here, because we would not presume them to be the best, only those that have given us the most pleasure and enjoyment, records that we have returned to again and again, and for whatever reason have captured a moment or special place in our hearts. And while we have limited our selection to 25 albums there were many, many more that could have, and maybe should have, featured. But there that’s the beauty [...]

So I know I said I was gonna post about the new Talib Kweli stuff, but its cloudy outside and I'm feeling rather autumnal, so I thought I would share some of my favorite folk tracks of the moment. Update: After several listens, I've decided that this is my ultimate peace of mind mix as well. So kick back, hit play, and relax. Also, here is a zip file of all the songs if you're into that sort of thing: "I'm Feeling Autumnal" Folk Mini-Mixtape (.zip file) [...]

So I know I said I was gonna post about the new Talib Kweli stuff, but its cloudy outside and I'm feeling rather autumnal, so I thought I would share some of my favorite folk tracks of the moment. My Own Sinking Ship - Good Old War : These guys are masters of upbeat melancholy. There music tells you that maybe things aren't going so well, but hey, thats the way it is, keep your head up. They also know how to kill with the vocal harmonies. The Dreamer - The Tallest [...]

Despite buying three tickets and being utterly fascinated by every one of his releases to date, I somehow managed to miss the Tallest Man on Earth last time he toured the UK. On this occasion however, I was determined to affect a different outcome and set plans in place to ensure I did not neglect him once more. So, accompanied by my girlfriend, I battled my way to the shining lights of Leeds through freezing wind and hints of snow wondering if my Swedish folk eidolon was finding England's increasingly biting climate just a little bit homely. Arriving [...]

The Tallest Man on Earth is the stage name of Swedish folk musician Kristian Matsson. Kristian's latest EP Sometimes the Blues is Just a Passing Bird has attracted the attention of many North Americans and has spread like wildfire over the internet and blogosphere. He has a sound reminiscent of Bob Dylan and cites him as an influence on his myspace . Here are my two favourite tracks off the EP. The Tallest Man on Earth - Little River The Tallest Man on Earth - The Dreamer [...]

On November 10, I made my way to the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia for an experience that would soon move me to a state of pure elation. It seemed as though Sufjan Stevens had a master plan of sorts, a way to hypnotize an entire theater by simply sharing what he's been lovingly nursing [...]

Picking up hitchhikers has always been an exhilarating activity for me. If you don't mind your car having the aromatics of a gym sock, hitchers always have a story to tell. In fact most hitchers are a lot like my ex-girlfriend: You never know where they're sleeping, they're dirty, and they'll probably give you diseases that won't show up for months - but you'll have a lot of fun and spend a lot of money on gas in the process. You have to give them credit for putting the logistics of their adventures in the hands of complete strangers. [...]
