(photo by cubagallery ) These are 50 tracks that delighted, inspired and fascinated us in 2012 and that we think are worthy of remembering long after the year is over. We present them here in highly unscientific ordered list form, with Matt's songs marked with a "-MG" and my choices with a "-TJ" next to them. To better spread the love, we've stuck with the one song per artist rule. Click here to download all the tracks in a zip and subscribe to our Spotify Playlist to stream them all. Enjoy y'all! [...]

Frank Yang I guess I should blame Letterman. When it was announced that English trio Daughter were doing a short North American tour around their CMJ appearance, I was quite excited as I figured with their full-length debut not due out until the new year, and only a couple of low profile EPs in The Wild Youth and His Young Heart to their name, their Monday night showcase at The Drake would be a intimate, even secret, occasion for those [...]
There are plenty of choices for purchasing digital music – iTunes, Amazon MP3, 7digital, etc. – but only one online retailer, eMusic, offered a subscription plan with customers paying a monthly fee for cash credit (formerly track download credits) to purchase music from their extensive library of artists. Now, some independent music labels [...]

Following an 18-year hiatus, soul singer Bobby Womack returns to top this week's list of new releases with The Bravest Man In The Universe , which easily ranks among the legendary singer's best albums to date. Following the approach he took with the late Gil Scott-Heron’s excellent final record, producer and XL Recordings head Richard Russell, along with co-producer and Blur/Gorillaz-leader Damon Albarn, adds moody electronics and trip-hop beats to create, what our Music Director, Don Yates, calls "masterful set of electro-soul" whose "spacious, modern production makes a surprisingly effective showcase for Womack’s grainy, deeply soulful vocals [...]

Hot Chip, Tallest Man On Earth, Metric, Dent May, POP ETC. (I want to go on the record saying that if you are going to change your band's name make it not the most terrible name in the history of time) & a big ol' list of other stuff. Dig in and let me know what you find! Anabot: Anabot EP Architecture in Helsinki: Like It Or Not EP (reissue) Bobby Womack: The Bravest Man in the Universe [...]

ithugsback.co.uk Though I only gave it a very passing mention when it came out, I was really quite fond of British quartet It Hugs Back's 2009 debut Inside Your Guitar ; after all, I described their aesthetic of narcoleptic vocals, humming organs, and understated guitar heroics as a charming blend of American Analog Set and Yo La Tengo - how could I not like its fuzzy, mid-fi charms? But I lost track of them between then and now, though not without reason: first, they found their way off [...]

As the days grow longer, so does the list of new releases. Summer approaches and it's that time of the year when every indie band wants their album released. But few have the gall to go up against Metric 's heavily anticipated Synthetica . Emily Haines will soon become one of this year's most celebrated female vocalists. Listen to "Speed The Collapse" here . It's been one of those years, one where so many notable indie groups are releasing albums, it just becomes mind boggling. So while we are very focused on Metric's [...]

Kjell B Persson It's not unfair to say that Labrador Records has something of a "house sound", and not just for the Swedish accents. With acts like The Radio Dept., Acid House Kings, and Sambassadeur on their roster, they're a reliable source for warm, fuzzy, indie pop-ish sounds and so when they announce a new signing, it's usually worth paying some attention - even when on paper the artist doesn't seem have much in common with the rest of their roster. Or in the case of Amanda Mair , especially when. Not [...]

Next week sees the release of some heavy-hitter releases, including new albums from POP ETC (the band formerly known as The Morning Benders), UK outfit Hot Chip, Swedish singer-songwriter The Tallest Man On Earth, and soul mastermind Bobby Womack. After changing their name from The Morning Benders to POP ETC , the Brooklyn outfit has adopted a new musical direction. Leaning away from their original indie beginnings and more towards an electronic and pop-infused sound, POP ETC are utilizing the name change in more ways than one, and it's paying off. The entirety of their self-titled debut [...]

photo by Victoria Holt R&B party-starters Fitz and the Tantrums have been touring pretty much non-stop since the release of their 2010 debut, Pickin' Up the Pieces , but this fall, they'll have a new album, and subsequently, a new reason to relentlessly tour. On October 9th, the band will release their currently-untitled sophomore effort via Dangerbird Records. To celebrate, the band is offering a free, five-track EP for download. You can find that, along with a slew of summer tour dates (including a stop at the Capitol Hill Block [...]

Lilja Birgisdottir Advance album streams are pretty par for the course these days, but if anyone can make it a special occasion, it's Sigur Rós . And they're certainly trying to. Though their new record and first in four years Valtari isn't out until May 29, the band will be offering an advance stream of the record on May 17 - that's today, people - but for only one hour. Dubbed " Valtari Hour" , it will roll across the globe at 7PM local time for [...]
