If you had to guess one of Tame Impala 's "favorite songs ever" what would it be? I bet you wouldn't have guessed that it's Outkast 's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below cut "Prototype." Visiting Triple J studios, the Australian outfit chose to cover that song for the radio station's ongoing "Like A Version" segment. The band turns the mellow funk-laden jam into a reverbed psychedelic number, and it's actually really good. Check it out below.
Seriously: Tame Impala took to Australia's triple j radio this morning to cover that touching tale of alien love from OutKast's Speakerboxxx / The Love Below , "Prototype." According to Kevin Parker , it's one of the band's mutual favorite songs, and it's receptive to their psychedelic touches - they basically succeed in making it sound like a Tame Impala song, with distorted guitars, funky backbeats, and competing vocals from Parker and Nick Allbrook . Los también australianos liderados por Kevin Parker aprovecharon divertidamente su última visita a este estudio radiofónico y arriba pueden ver cómo derrochan su lado romántico en esta psicodélica interpretación, con la cual todos exploran su André 3000 interno.

I've been on a bit of an Outkast binge of late, mainly revisiting their earlier albums and then not listening to much else at all. I go through phases like that and whenever I'm done, I come out of it like an invigorated funky gangsta pimp. That's not to say that their more recent albums aren't worth noting, though, especially when it comes to tracks like "Prototype" , from 20032s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below . Normally I'd consider Andre 3000 untouchable as far as covers like this go, but I'm posting this for a couple of reasons: first, Tame Impala kind of holds their own with their spacey, straightforward/reverential take on the song, and also I'd forgotten that there was a video for the original, it's amazing, and it somehow has less than 2000 views despite being on the official Outkast channel:
