Garage punk gospel is what Toronto's Deadly Snakes delivered on their 2003 record Ode To Joy . The band— broken up since 2006—achieved a sort of delirious rapture on that record: a wild-eyed organ-humming sound that could have been recorded on the wooden pew of an old abandoned church. With songs like "I Want To Die" and "There Goes Your Corpse Again," they were like an equally morbid and charming cousin of Jonathan Fire*Eater: one that read too many comic books, smoked too many cigarettes and was always fidgeting with something on his mind. 1.) Josh Ritter - "Thin Blue Flame" (from The Animal Years ) Nearly 10 minutes in length, Ritter's masterpiece is a "Stairway to Heaven"-caliber achievement with Jimmy Page's guitar licks exchanged for 700-plus words of poetry. Traversing a war-torn world and a host of Shakespearean, Biblical, and science-oriented images, Ritter finds solace in a ray of hope: "So I stopped looking for royal cities in the air / Only a full house gonna have a prayer." Laura Barrett, sensibly dressed for the commute to tonight's Horseshoe gig (though the lady does need some mittens) Old Man Winter is dumping on Toronto at the moment. For some people, the weather will guarantee they're staying in and watching American Idol's karaoke warblers. If you've access to the TTC, though, or live in the downtown core, and actually care to see some true musical talent, there's a triple bill of great Toronto musical artists at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern this evening. First on the bill, and starting at 9pm, is [...]

Josh Reichmann used to be in Tangiers , a kick-ass Toronto band that had one or two former players from the Deadly Snakes . Tangiers released three excellent records of fraught, garage-y soul rock between 2003 and 2005. That's, like, one record a year. Now Josh Reichmann's got a sweaty new band, an Oracle Band, and they've just released their first EP, Life Is Legal , out now on Paper Bag Records. If you were on Paper Bag's mailing list during the week of Oct. 7th, you woulda got a free download [...]
Charlie Wadhams (Los Angeles, CA) Charlie Wadhams new EP In A Goldmine could be the perfect album for the month of November. His smooth voice resembles the bliss and charisma of falling leaves. It's no wonder heavyweights like Inara George, Mike Andrews, and Eleni Mandell are listed among fans. Somber yet hope-filled in tone on Goldmine Wadhams oozes so much class there is not one doubt

Former Tangiers member Josh Reichmann is making his new EP Life Is Legal available for free download. You can get it here . The username for the download is: reichmann The password is: lifeislegal Josh Reichmann Oracle Band plays the Wrong Bar in Toronto on October 9th. Josh Reichmann's MySpace

I've got something spectacular to report! An extended family member just got a write up on Spin.com ! I know, I know, spin posted warped tour dates like three years ago that swore Des Moines was in Ohio, but that doesn't REALLY scrap their credibility. A mere oversight, right? So who's the family member? A one miss Alex Lilly, whom you may know from The Bird and the Bee (they played at Coacella this year) or Colorforms , and who now goes by the much more fitting pseudonym of [...]
Toronto - Has anyone realized that next weekend, Toronto will be absolutely insane? First, you have the mother of all Canadian indie band festivals, with the ever popular North By Northeast festivals, then to top that off, you got: The Worldwide Short Film festival (short in length, not directors height). If that doesn't suit your fancy, or you are a 16 year old teenager, then you got the Much Music Video Awards . [...]

Now that Andy Reid and that tremendous brain fart of a 4th and 15 punt have been properly exhausted as objects of the city's anger and criticism, it's time to turn our wrath upon far more serious transgressors. Or don't you believe that Lincoln Financial Field management was secretly rooting for the Saints on Saturday night? See, after Garcia and company sunk the Giants with a game-ending field goal on Jan. 7th, the mass exodous of fans re-exposed the troubling architectural instability of the stadium's exit ramps, which supposedly "swayed like the deck of a cruise ship"...
Toronto's Tangiers are one of the premier rock acts around although they haven't, yet, hit it big. They've been called post-punk and "neo-garage" and people seem to have a lot of fun tracing out their varied influences. But it is too damn hot for me to worry about compartmentalizing them at the moment. You want some excellent Canadian rock? You like crisp drumming, jangly guitars and some nifty organ work? Then here you go. Tangiers' sound has evolved quite a bit over their three albums and this session for CBCRadio3 draws from their then [...]
