![[QUICKIE] Tanlines – MIXED EMOTIONS (w/ “All of Me”)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4275949_lg.jpg)
pardon me for asking, pardon me for thinking, all of me is asking, all of me is thinking ♫ Tanlines - All of Me Tanlines once had promise . They have now delivered big time with a solid, textured album & even better 2-piece (!) live show . Hello summer. [ Quickies are mini-reviews that can fit into a 140 character tweet. They are of albums that people already know of but perhaps are curious about [...]

I love putting together our monthly mixtapes. It's fun slowly compiling the tracks over the course of the month; it's fun sequencing the tracks for the mix; and I love that "ah ha" moment when I realize the mix is finally done. All of the pieces for this one fell into play last night, and although I normally like living with my mixes for awhile before sharing them, this one just seemed ready to be set free. You'll find lots of great new music from familiar artists like Aesop Rock, steffaloo, and Ty Segall and White Fence, but this mix [...]

If I were to solely base my feelings for Mixed Emotions on its opening track, “Brothers,” I would be here to tell you that Tanlines has made the best indie pop album of 2012. On “Brothers ,” swelling harmonies are laid carefully over Eric Emm’s wailing baritone vocals, creating an infectious pop song that goes beyond “catchy” and becomes unforgettable due to its infusion of subtle gravity. It packs so much promise that the album’s subsequent inconsistency is a bit disappointing, yet the record still has some memorable moments scattered throughout. The point that immediately sets this [...]

The music recorded by Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm, the two guys behind the Brooklyn's Tanlines , could make a great case study in the way music, bands, and recording have changed in the past few decades. For example, a few years ago Cohen was best known as the frontman behind the dance-punk quintet Professor Murder (a name borrowed from a pair of skits on the fantastic sketch-comedy show Mr. Show ). Meanwhile, Emm performed in the math rock band Don Caballero (which also took it's name from a skit-comedy show: Second City Television ). In addition to [...]
MP3: Tanlines - "Brothers" By now, we’ve at least grown weary of the phenomenon that is the old internet single making its way onto the debut album. There are those favorable examples like Cults’ “Go Outside,” which turned out to be a harbinger of an incredibly rich, conceptually-developed album; there are also more regrettable examples like “Pumped Up Kicks” that succeeded only in tricking us into listening to an awful album. For Tanlines’ Mixed Emotions , “Real Life” is that single: it’s a positively infectious, dynamic synth-pop [...]

Mixed Emotions is not a perfect album, but when it works, it provides some of the most thrilling moments of pop music so far this year.

It feels good to get back into the old routine. After SXSW it felt like it'd be awhile since we had a normal week (not that this has been an entirely normal week). Still, there was no way I'd let the week pass without either a Single Serving or a Served Three Ways (Served Three Ways will return next week). This week we have a lot of great new tunes including music recommended to me by Andrianna from Gluttony Is The New Black and discovered courtesy of a showcase hosted by Connor of [...]
With the creeping normalisation of blog-propelled firework careers monopolising our ever-excitable music press, Tanlines ' slow rise is a refreshing yarn. The Brooklyn duo’s components are themselves anything but fresh faces. Eric Emm was a member of Don Caballero in the late ‘90s and has since produced for the likes of !!! and Professor Murder, his Tanlines partner Jesse Cohen’s project. This is their debut long player, but they’ve been making music for the last three years, dropping a pair of dazzling singles (one, ‘Real Life’ has wisely been featured here) and remixes that included a calypso-flecked take on [...]

The Brooklyn duo of Eric Emm and Jesse Cohen originally formed Tanlines as a remix project, which consisted of their friends singing with their music. However, as time went by, their music experimentation rapidly turned into a band. In March of 2010, the band released their debut EP, Settings. After touring extensively and releasing lots of remixes, Tanlines began to pop up on listener’s radars. The group became well known for their funky, house-music, electronic beats. Mixed Emotions, the band’s first full-length album, is an eclectic compilation of oddly ethnic rhythms, booming lyrics and mesmerizing melodies that create [...]
Their song “Real Life” has been floating around since 2010, but with Mixed Emotions , Tanlines finally have an album’s worth of material. Vocalist and keyboardist Eric Emm pairs well with multi-instrumentalist Jesse Cohen, and throughout their debut they manage to blend some dance floor-worthy pop gems with the sound of the ‘80s in a way that differentiates them from the many others who have gone that route. “All of Me” and “Yes Way” position Tanlines as a dance party-starting band in a vein similar to that of Vampire Weekend channeling Paul Simon’s Graceland [...]
The first full-length album from Tanlines is well worth the wait.
Tanlines Mixed Emotions out on 3.20 MP3 | CD | Vinyl | Stream B Mixed Emotions is one of the most vivid break-up albums in recent memory. It actually feels like going through a breakup; it feels, at times, gleefully absurd, but at others, irritating, moody and incomprehensible. Is that a good thing? Depends on how sadistic/masochistic you’re feeling when you put the record on. Continue reading: [...]

Brooklyn duo Tanlines have flown under many music lovers' radar since their formation in 2009. Granted, the group has only produced a 6-song EP ( Settings , in 2010) and a healthy amount of remixes, but most of their previous works are quite accessible, featuring incredibly upbeat and boisterous beats and samples. Mixed Emotions will be released next week (March 20, via True Panther), and it's difficult for me to imagine the duo not getting a lot of attention moving forward. [...]

Upon hearing the serrated electro-pop of single 'S.A.W.' (sadly not included here) back in 2010 I wasn't the only one to make a mental note of the band name. By this point Tanlines had already been in existence for two years, and it's taken a further two years for them to finally complete their debut album. What took them so long? Are they just perfectionists who've tweaked the songs endlessly, or has it simply taken that time to create a sound that makes them stick out from the crowd of other Brooklynites? It can't be easy vying for [...]

Hey dudes, here's my list of favorite albums from the past year (20 10 , stoners). I picked twenty this year as a small tribute to this being the first year where debate on how to pronounce said year swirled fiercely and ardently. Is it "twenty-ten"? Or is it "two thousand ten"? How to decide? Anyhoo, I ranked 'em, but after the first 6 or 7, it's all pretty arbitrary. The Suburbs came out on top. Can you believe that shit?? . . [...]

If there was one "scene" I watched with great intent this past year, it would be the seemingly unprecedented barrage of hazy electro-pop releases that made their way onto the internet and into people's hearts/portable media devices. I've literally never listened to so much non-rock music as I have in the past 8 or 9 months. "Chillwave", as the genre has become known, was a divisive, early year buzz topic, created and championed the year before by (those danged) writers and bloggers to the dismay, chagrin, and annoyance of many. To others, it was simply a cozy conduit by [...]
Tanlines , a new project from two very creative minds, has brought about a strange period in music history. The two guys in question have a strong musical resume; Jesse Cohen comes from Professor Murder, and Eric Emm moved on from the highly respected prog-rock band, Don Caballero. After finally sitting down to listen to the strange new jungle fusion though, it becomes clear and very disappointing to know that after playing bass in the funky math rock band, Emm would move on to make music that feels as if it should be in the background of a Royal Caribbean [...]

Do I even need to say anything? It's not shit as you'd imagine it's full of freshness and more of the same from a label that continues to pump out goodness on what seems to be a daily basis. Highlights include Golden Filter's 'Favourite Things', Two Door Cinema Club's 'Something Good Can Work', Chew Lips 'Solo' and Beni 'Fringe Element' but it's all good really and well programmed ( tres important pour moi ) too. If you've been living in a cave or today is your first day on the internet and you didn't know there [...]
