Zanzibar 1/24–2/1

Zanzibar 1/24–2/1 I spent a week or so in Zanzibar, mainly in Stone Town. It's a beautiful and ancient, but a bit touristy now. Stone Town is characterized by it's tiny twisty streets that are too small for cars. Also lots of ornately carved doors. I stayed at Warere Town House which made up in friendliness for what it lacked in elegance. I went on a tour of a spice plantation, which was educational and got me out of the city for a day. If I had been more ambitious, I would have [...]

“It gives one hope, this great strength of Africa”.

Easter Sunday was a wonderful day. The weather was chilly, but that didn't matter. My friends and I went to our usual restaurant and sat at a window by the water. We looked out and saw across the horizon the light gray sky and below it were small white-capped waves and the light brown sand of the beach. A rock jetty jutted into the water. Some people walked the beach, a couple with dogs. One small dog played as he walked, jumping into the air and chewing on his leash. A family stopped to watch the waves. Their little girl [...]

Lungu Lungu: Tanzania’s Hip-Hop Originators

I love African music from the 1970s. From Congolese rumba to Ghanaian highlife, Angolan semba to Malian national orchestras—pretty much anything from anywhere is dope. This might come as a surprise to some, because my ... read more

Cheryl Cole Has Malaria

Cheryl Cole was apparently hospitalized after contracting malaria during a vacation with Derek Hough to Tanzania. The singer, who is thought to have picked up the disease by getting bitten by a mosquito, apparently thought that she was just exhausted and even joked that she was just suffering from a hangover before she fainted at a photo shoot last weekend. She tested positive for malaria earlier this week and is expected to be in the hospital for the next couple of days before being moved back home to finish her recovery over the next few weeks. I hope she gets [...]

Bela Fleck- Africa Project

Bela Fleck- Africa Project Bela Fleck- Africa Project Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a show for Bela Fleck’s Throw Down Your Heart: The Africa Project Album(s). These albums follow Bela’s journey through Africa playing with some really cool African musicians. He is currently touring with a few of the artists and the show was incredible. Tanzanian artists Anania Ngoliga and John Kitime collaborated with Bela on the finger piano and guitar. It’s amazing to see the American banjo used to in this context. N’goni Ba is a Malian band lead by Bassekou Kouate and they [...]

I Am In: Mnemba Atoll, Tanzania…

I Am In: Mnemba Atoll, Tanzania… Other than the absolute scenic beauty of this atoll with a heart shaped island in the middle, it boasted the best snorkling and scuba diving spot I have ever seen. Lush corals surround it and then a sudden dip into the india ocean. The fish aren't scared and will come really close to you. The trumpet fish are huge and the Napoleons will brush up against you lazily. The corals are like rainbows and the species are endless. To top it all off, we went to another side of the atoll and swam with wild dolphins. It was an exquisite [...]

Sesame Street Is the Weapon of the Future

Sesame Street Is the Weapon of the Future No wait...that's not right. But both music and the children's TV show are tools for cross-border communication. As a kid watching Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, I had no idea that kids in foreign lands might be watching the same characters, and hearing them in their own languages. A new CD/DVD combo from Putumayo shows how the culture of Sesame Street has spread around the globe, with 13 songs from Tanzania, Brazil, France, Russia, South Africa, India, China, Israel, Mexico, Palestine, and the Netherlands. The inclusion of a DVD [...]
