I recently read somewhere that "sometimes it's easier to ask for forgiveness, than to ask for permission." So during Day 3 of my unexpected confinement to St. Elizabeth's Medical... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .
Earlier this week, the 27th, two huge albums were dropped by Pretty Lights Music; Supervision's Telescopic, and Paul Basic's The Mirror. When I first heard "Lost in Bass" off of Telescopic, it immediately reminded me of the classic Pretty Lights sound that Derek laid down for us five years ago. While The Mirror brings a [...]
Here is tonight's Boston Accents playlist, and it's a fucking doozy. We kicked it off with a double shot of THE FAUX, then rolled back to the early-'00s for some post-millennial garage... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .
Moonbell From: San Francisco, United States San Francisco's Moonbell have not been together long but on their first e.p. Figurine they sound like shoegazing veterans. Their swirling, hazey sound has one foot on the path laid down by Spacemen 3 and the Telescopes and the other foot firmly planted in Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd's back garden. This is music made for dark basements with nothing more than a rudimentary liquid light show and [...]
News Devin Townsend has so much explaining to do. As a tireless songwriter and producer, he's set to release two albums on June 21, Ghost and Deconstruction, to complete the Devin Townsend Project cycle that he started with 20092s Ki and Addicted. That's four full-length records, 43 songs, and 260 minutes of music unleashed over about two [...]

I nearly gave up on this instrumental (with vocals) on several occasions but then each time something really interesting happened. I suppose you could probably say the same for songs of this length (8 minutes +) first time around. Taken as a whole though Northern Italy's Thee Piatcions do a pretty good impression of what a european Brian Jonestown Massacre might sound like. Namely a rambling psychedelic montage that sits just as well with those not completely usurped by what the drugs have to offer. As it is 'As Seen Through A Telescope' is neither mind blowing nor mind altering [...]
While some of us had to board the SXSW Sad Plane and get back to beautiful, warm and scene Boston USA, the rest of the Phoenix crew hung back in Austin into the engaging Sunday afternoon and... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .

by way of dipping my toes back into the blogwater, here's the shoegazing mix i posted a while back, repackaged to match the other compilations i've done recently. here's whast i said last time: shoegazing as a music genre has popped in and out of fashion since its media inception around 1990. but these days it seems more popular than ever, with various blogs, compilations and new bands dedicated to celebrating and replicating the layered sounds popularised by just a handful of bands. shoegazing will always have a special place in my music collection because its [...]

I must confess; after my celebrated title work the other day, I'm finding the accolades tough to live up to. In other words: sorry about my weak headline, but the cut is hot regardless. Over a classic Isaac Hayes sample courtesy of Blaze P , Reks ' M.Diesel associate Lucky Dice returns strong after a year-or-so hiatus. You may have heard dude crush the joint "Telescopes" on Grey Hairs ; now prepare for more. Sorry about the shitty old pic; MySpace is being bitchy and blocking my [...]

This is my favorite picture of Falcon Heene, mainly because it's one of the few where he looks like he has an idea of what a freakin' creep his father is. Anyway, amid the sheriff's press conferences implying the family's too poor to fine, youtube spoofs and the Halloween costumes , Huffington Post columnist David Wild has come up with something NHT can sink its teeth into: a balloon boy playlist . If & when NHT has the track we'll slip it in there. Suggestions welcome! In a week we'll revisit and maybe get the whole thing in [...]

Ye olde music blogger is bound to return to the time when music started to mean more than Larry Gogan's Sunday afternoon run down of the Irish Top 30. It was there that he fell for obscure acts at track 15 on tapes that were wedged into the far recesses of metal bargain bins. Fingernails counted for nothing when there was a copy of 'George Best' to be snapped up for £1.99. Hardly mattered that the cover was smashed in 10 different places and the swing action on the plastic hinges failed most of the time. Back then the thrill [...]

Formed in 1987, Stephen Lawrie created some of the most sonically challenging music of the burgeoning "shoegaze" era. Taking the noise of the Jesus and Mary Chain records to a new level, but maintaining a pop sensibility that set them ahead of the pack. Songs like "7th# Disaster" and "The Perfect Needle" took England by storm and put them on the cover of all the British magazines. There second album moved towards the "baggier" sound that was popular in 1992. Despite containing brilliant songs like "Flying", the media turned on them following the lugheaded "change is [...]

This time last year, I was a fixture in Whelans most weekends; checking out whatever trendsetters crossed the Atlantic with more than an 8.0 from Pitchfork and the Foggy Notions seal of approval. In September 2009, however, things are sadly different. This state of affairs exists on account of me being under house arrest until I submit my monster thesis which is currently 50,000 words and counting. From a live music perspective then, this blog is limited to what I can cover. In other words, as much as I would like to see Dinosaur [...]

It's one of those days where I find it hard to write about something. Today was a rough day for me. I am not very inclined these days to get out and do things. So, when a day like today shows up, I struggle really hard. I got up at 6am to get ready to take Mom to the hospital for an MRI. She has serious back/leg troubles and is having a hard time getting around. But, all in all, she is in pretty good shape for someone who is 85 years old. So, I took her for her MRI [...]
